Personally I think this is crazy, VED should be based on emissions so it gently encourages consumers to lean towards cleaner vehicles. Once there is a huge adoption of 0 emission vehicles on the road, I then think the VED could transition to a tiered system based on the price of the car. But while we have huge number of dirty fossil fuel cars on the road, VED should only be based on emissions.

So a Tesla which is a premium car with zero emissions will end up paying VED when a much cheaper car with very low emissions would pay nothing. No car should pay less VED than another car with lower emissions.

Mr B you need to get your facts right. VED does not pay for road. It's local taxation that does. VED is based on emissions but from April it will be based on emissions and cost of vehicle will also come into play. Read ipayroadtax.com for more info

Just put it on fuel.

I've always thought they should scrap VED altogether and just tax fuel (even) more. Then people who do more miles and/or have big thirsty engines pay more tax and the peeps with small engines or doing very few miles, pay less. Surely that is fair? Then they just keep adjusting the fuel tax rate up and down to maintain the revenue needed to finally sort our terrible road network.

Sounds like a reasonable system....works for all - electric peeps pay nothing, and as you say those who nacker the environment pay more, those who wear the life out of the roads with loads of miles or heavy vehicles - pay more. The granny who goes to the shops once a week pays next to nothing. Its a pay per mile and emission tax that doesn't need a load of monitoring equipment.

Sorry but where do you think the electric comes from, power stations burning coal. They also clock up more airtravel miles during manufacture, so in reality they should pay a different tax, not zero tax

So if I buy a Mustang and the listed price is £39500 I won't pay the higher VED rate of £340 from year 2-6. What if the listed price is £36000 and I add extras like auto gearbox, posh colour, custom pack etc and it costs £40200 do I then pay an extra £340 pa. The question is what do they mean by listed price? Is it the price of the basic model or not? What happens to the rate of VED -is it the listed price when you sign the contract or the listed price when the car is delivered ie there could be price increase between the contract to purchase and the delivery date? Anyone have any idea how soon I can renew my tax online before the end of the month. I should put it on direct debit really. I have looked at various websites the only answer I got was 2 months before if your going on holiday which I am not. Odd that such a straight forward questions doesn't have a clear answer.

What ever system you have, the revenue would have to slightly increase year on year. Does it matter? If one day we all drove electric cars, we would still all be paying more than we do now. They would start taxing per us mile if they couldn't find another way to charge us though fuel.

If you need one you need one .... London and vans may be an issue, long time before uk roll out on any fines. Its the older cars that are the issue. They do plenty of low emission vans anyway.

It seems that more people are starting to see the benefit of putting road tax on fuel, a statement I made over thirty years ago and people agreed it was a good solution then. The problem is that road tax is not used purely for the uk road system, much of it is used elsewhere and because of that the current dated system will not be changed, why would they change a system that gives them a guaranteed figure every year. If the more fair and just system of one or two pence on a gallon of fuel were adopted the economic climate will dictate the fuel consumed, if things are good we go out more so using more fuel, if money is tight we tend to stay in and so use less fuel, ergo less tax.

wonder if i'm right thinking this; I bought my car 2nd hand a few months ago, it was £50k when new 2 years ago, so I'm going to get hit for this tax hike - yes?

I will never afford a new car of 40k,out if work. Any car I get in future, will be like a few hundred quid, diesel, as ive got a biodiesel processor

Im a little bit confused by something if someone cared to explain....www.parkers.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/vxr-2007/car-tax/ I saw this and I was curious about something. It says Annual which I will assume yearly its £300.00 but Six-monthly Road Tax is £165.00. So are you paying £165 for 6 months? and since the first year its not applicable does that mean if I bought a second-hand card I pay £300? Sorry about this I am still new to all of this and I am trying to understand the math in here.

Ok so this is some what contradictory to what the GOV website says. According to the GOV site all tax rates for cars sold before 1st April 2017 will remain the same as it is now. All brand new cars after this date will have this VED(Showroom TAX) which by the looks of things is just taking current tax rates and multiplying them by 2. Road TAX levy should be scrapped completely and added to the price of fuel. The more you use the road the more you pay. The more efficient or economical your car the less you burn fuel and the more you can drive while paying overall less. That way the country can save money on expensive road tax enforcement tying up police services, huge court case expenses and those wishing to avoid paying the levy as its all in on the fuel. I think an extra 5pence/litre on fuel won't really show much of a impact for road users at all and would simplify the whole saga. The more you burn the more you have to fill up and the more one pays.

Well i just bought a Mazda RX8, highest current TAX levy and Mazda have a whole new range coming out next year especially a MX5 high powered model, talk of a new RX model. There is no way what so ever new high powered models will ever sell on this new tax scheme. Guess we maybe better of buying a canal boat or pedal power.

Apparently its because of the lost revenue with the VW diesel scandal, and the abolishment of the tax disc and they have lost quite a bit of money, not sure if its true, but wouldn't be surprised if it was

So after 6 years all the cars including the £40000+ car with the v8 will cost £150 a year? Or the v8 pays £150 + co2 tax.

Its a bargain for some big cars being £140 a year to tax, but for small cars £140 is excessive, really wrong.

In the channel Leland they put the road tax on fuel so if you drive a lot you pay more fair I think

If I bought a car it would be old simple, light weight one because it would have less to go wrong with it, it would probably be a little bit more fuel saving and it would probably look a but more interesting than a lot of the cars on the market now. it might also have a cassette player.

In Belgium for a 5.0 Ford Mustang you pay a "first registration fee" of around 11.000 € ... plus 3000 Euro road tax for that first year. After that you pay 3K every year ....

5 years later… the roads are still shit… i’m paying £480* per year for my 2L 5 series while my mate in his c63 (6.2l) petrol fuel guzzler is paying £555* per year… worlds gone mad… i’m going to end up buying a c63 too now… way more bang for my buck in all honesty 😭😂

It must be so disheartening if you own sat a 14 plate car on free or £20 a year tax, you upgrade to a 18 plate and it’s now £140 a year. No wonder, used cars before April 2017 seem to be popular

I always buy ~5 year old cars so my car ownership strategy for the coming years will be: Buy low emissions vehicles registered pre-April 2017 to take advantage of free/£20/£30 road tax. Then in ~2025 buy a luxury gas guzzler that’s over 6 years old, and pay a flat rate of £140 road tax. Winner winner!

I could see this coming a mile off, more people buying zero road tax cars= lost revenue. £140 is a big leap, for smaller cars it should be £100 tax and larger more polluting cars, maybe £120. Its just wrong, i hope they make changes to it eventually

Tax by the amount of miles you drive X a given CO2, Carbon Footprint to build and NOX rate, based on your car...So an electric car would be say 0.05p a mile and a gas guzzling mustang would be say 5pm a mile. Future proof also once we switch all to electric, get your mileage confirmed at an annual MOT or car will send mileage data wirelessly itself in future anyway

i only do 6000 miles a year but I pay same as a taxi firm using same car doing 2 or 3 times that mileage think that bit unfair

This new system is an excuse to extort more money from the motorist. . .my 2016 Corsa = £35 tax per year.....my replacement Corsa= £180+ tax per year , despite the smaller engine with less emissions. . .where is the justification in X5 increase in VED???

VED/Road fund licence/Car tax is just a tax, which is just another way for your government to take money from you the people. So the question posed is some what pointless. Please disassociate the "name" of the tax and where the government is likely to spend it, It's a pool of money, just cus if has car tax in the name doesn't mean it will be spent on the roads. Otherwise where should the goverment spend such taxes as VAT and Inheritance? I get the intention, yes the roads are awful, but like all governments they have to make a budget that suits the current economic climate and live with not being able to please everyone all the time.

Road tax should be paid by total annual mileage in my opinion

I know one thing, diesel car owners need to pay real car tax now, they have been cossetted since Gordon brown gave them cheap tax concessions based on their emissions, what he didn't anticipate at the time was that diesel engine cars are responsible for deadly carcinogenic particulate emissions, which we are all breathing in. They should be taxed at twice the rate of petrol engine cars, lets hope this new regime taxes diesel car owners heavily, everywhere I look are diesel cars on the roads.

So basically the gov is telling you if you want to save money in the long run go and buy a gutsy fiesta st or a Corsa vxr. Don't bother about those silly 1.0L cars anymore.

I think it's great that the government want everyone to switch to electric cars, I have never seen a charging point where I live and what we suppose to do trail extension leads across the paths so people can prosecute you when they trip up ! It's ok for MP'S who have a good wage but the average working person who can just about afford a banger to get him to work there the people that suffer. I live in Warwickshire in UK and the roads have pot holes more like sink holes so where's the money going

Tax the driving license not the vehicle as You can only drive one vehicle at the time .

. I'm going to remove the cat from my car and add caster oil to my diesel so it smokes like hell seeing as i'm paying for the shite that comes from my exhaust.

Yes, i have a 7 year old car, this gives me no incentive to buy a post April 2017 car at all.

Guess what motorists? that extra money they are raising is not being spent on fixing roads its used for smart motorways, more speed cameras and traffic calming measures like speed humps and restricted speed areas, more warning signage and paint saying slow on roads and more enforcement cameras. also narrowing chicanes e.g. 7f however the problem this creates is cars are slowed down or idling in traffic which affects pedestrians more as moving vehicles are less dangerous to the air surrounding pedestrians which will then create stricter EU emission standards such as Euro 7 and 8 and more motorists will be caught out just like in London drivers who bought a vehicle 3 years ago have euro 5 diesels will now have to pay a ULEZ central london charge which discourages people from buying vehicles and rather financing which is another idea the government wants as it sees regular payments towards financial companies as stable income which means they are less likely to liquidate and go bankrupt so banks will not need to be bailed out but then again the greedy bankers will just take more risks with lending and it will cause the cunt of all res sessions big enough to bend the conservatives over and rape there trust funds. road tax that punishes low end vehicles that the common person can afford which may be less likely to have high emissions to reduce motorists on the road as the dvsa plans to reduce vehicular motorists by 90% over then next 100 years and use public roads for business and public transport. its all false economy in the end because people will tend to keep older polluting vehicles as they dont fall under cunty road tax legislation. oh and the government refuses to acknowledge they have misslead people into buying polluting vehicles so offers a 2 grand scrap page which makes no difference if someone splashed 30 grand 10 year ago

I would like to say go and do one to the government, how dare you increase car tax when we already pay astronomical amounts of tax. For example, i own a currently tax free car. How ever I pay fuel tax, insurance tax, repair bill tax breakdown cover which is also taxed. So in short I already pay a lot of tax just to keep the car on the road, the whole reason I bought this car was to save a little money in fuel costs and especially tax! How many perfectly good cars are going to be scrapped because there simply to much to tax! And they say there going to spend money on the roads every time they increase it but we all know that's nonsense! My area is riddled with potholes and the road system is poor to say the least. Well moved from good old England to Oz and thought well maybe I should bring my cars and bike with me.?! After all it's a ZM3 and 79 camaro that I had in the states. And my bike that I used to run to work in England. Road tax here in Oz $500-$700 per car per year oh and that applies to motorcycles as well!🤔😡. Unlike England you do get a little liability cover with that but that's about to change. Roads here are crap, uneven nothing really special like the ones in France or Germany or even the bumpy English roads. Motorcycle regro in England was £75. Needless to say both cars are still unregistered and not in use. The system I like is the one in America! Where it doesn't cost you an arm or leg to own a car, which means you could own a lot. Which helps to reduce what's being crushed, destroyed and recycled. God bless the USA.

CO2 emission-based tax is nonsens based on climate change BS. Electric cars wearing roads down as well. Fair system should be based on how much someone is usung a car-which obviously leads to fuel consumption per 60 miles or whatever distance you wish. It is easy to calculate, in average, how much car with certain engine and fuel consumption will be using roads. Another factor is weight. I'm not a physicist and I don't know if ther's much difference, in terms of wearing down a road, between 450 kg car and 600 kg car. Ther's definitely difference between small car and huge lorrie. Lorries carring goods we need so tax will end up in those goods prices anyway. This is anavoidable. That would be bad news for horses owners though, as ther's no one to participate in their hobby costs. But it's fair. What I find totally unfair is huge tax bump on expencive cars. They will not wear down the roads more than cheap cars of same weight and fuel consumption. This is just tax on wealth. If government wants it-let it be called by real name. I hate hypocrisy.

So the UK motor industry is screwed. No point buying a car that emits less than 100g cO2. Just straight tax everyone! How did we ever allow these people to have so much power.

Cyclists dont oay tax so should not be on road

So how much emissions does a bike produce, 0 of course, that's why we dont pay tax, but then we do also pay for the upkeep, of our poor roads, from our council tax just like everyone else does so we are perfectly entitled to ride on the roads.

Road tax is road tax and should be spent on the roads which it is not,look at all the potholes on roads which take 1 years to fix,then they come and just patch it,and within 12 months holes back again.If were talking about emissions go look at the SHIPPING Industry they are the worst polluters, but the government keeps that quiet, there more worried about petrol lawnmower lol than a stinking ship.
