    BMW also uses boxer engines in some motorcycles! Porsche is the premium brand with "know-how" by keeping manufacturing boxer engines for decades (specially in their main model- 911) and Subaru is "normal" brand that has this know-how also. The VW Beetle had boxer engines because Hitler demanded Ferdinand Porsche to design it. Many solutions and engineering in this car became part of Porsche philosophy...some of heritage you still can see today.

    Technically the Testarossa 12 isn't really a "flat" engine... well, it's flat, but it's not a boxer. The pistons aren't opposed in pairs like VW, Subaru, Alfa, etc., but opposite cylinders share crankpins, so the Ferrari is really using a 180-degree V12. Neat, huh?

  • @Barilla133
    @Barilla1338 жыл бұрын

    Flat engines and boxers are not exactly the same, flat engine is basically a V engine with a 180 degree separation between thecylinder banks. What this means is that in a boxer engine two opposing pistons will always be going the opposite way at the same time while in flat V engine they will move the same way. This gives the boxer layout a better balance. However flat V is usually used with high number of pistons like in the Testarossa so different banks of cylinders will be trying to balance each other out so it does not matter that much.

  • @aristos247
    @aristos2478 жыл бұрын

    Their is a small but BIG difference between FLAT and BOXER engine.. In the FLAT engine(correct term is "V-FLAT") the pistons move at the same direction while in the BOXER the pistons move in contrast..

    I have 3 different vehicles that have 3 different engine types. The 1.8 Liter inline 4 cylinder engine from a 2012 Honda Civic, the 2.5 Liter Flat 4 Boxer engine from the 2014 Subaru Forester, and the 3.5 Liter V6 engine from a 2007 Honda Odyssey with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) are all naturally aspirated, no turbochargers or superchargers. The Honda Odyssey and Honda Civic have five-speed automatic transmissions, while the Subaru Forester has a Lineartronic CVT, one of the best and most reliable CVT in the market.

    flat engines, of any cylinders, 4,6,8 whatever and inline 6 are the most reliable designs. My theory is that it has to do with perfect balance. They are using nature to remove any shocks and vibration, which makes the parts stay in the perfect spot the longest. Look at Subaru flat 4. No piston skirt at all. No counterweights on the crank, at all. All the parts are using gravity to stay in place. pistons are laying flat resting on the cylinder wall. Doesn't take much to get them moving side to side. Inline 6 uses physics and rotational angles to make it run smooth and thus very long.

    Technically the Ferrari Testarossa engine is a 180 degree V12 because each opposed pair of pistons shares a crank pin as like with any other V-engine design. Porsche 911 6 cylinder boxer engines (and all "true" boxer engines) have each opposed pair of pistons on its own crank pin like in any standard inline engine. A Porsche flat-6 engine isn't appreciably shorter than an inline-6. In the case of the Porsche engine the flat configuration's low centre of gravity and ability be to air-cooled was the more important concern than was minimizing engine length.

    They're not messing with you. A typical fuel-driven car runs on what is called a "internal combustion engine" thus explosions. These mini- controlled explosions drive the cylinders, which in turn rotate the crankshaft ( see video). The rotational power from the crankshaft ultimately gets diverted to your wheels, and allows you to move.

    Siddhant Dwivedy Depends and no... Straight 6 is harder to reduce vibrations than a v because of the non opposing firing sequence. They do well, but not as smooth as more balanced opposing engines. Although that being said, some straights are smooth and some v's are rough.

  • @macduggles
