Why is it so hard to explain? The trap is a dead end street where the drugs and ho's are at, if you're selling drugs there you're "trappin'". The trap house is the abandoned house nearby where the dope is stored and cooked up. They're all over Atlanta and got made popular by rappers like Big Boi, Jeezy and T.I. and is closely related to the Houston and Memphis rap scenes. The musical side got popular with big heavy bass and rolling hi hats.

They have to separate the meaning of "trap" from real American trap music. China is hard on any Western influences. The country has gone as far as banning rap on television, as well as visible tattoo, earrings or anything else that may be related to hip hop culture, such as graffiti. So separating any negative connotations is necessary to avoid too much government attention. Just like the guy said at the beginning, a video about rap caused the government to come down hard on them. That being said, I don't think most of them know how trap music originated anyway. China tends to like the culture, but not the people who actually made it.

Trap is a word used to describe "trap houses", where people would get trapped doing drugs, usually crack. Trap music, originally, was music that described drug/party scenarios, usually in the form of hip hop and rap. Now, trap is about anything, and has a very defined high hatty, clicky beat.

It's the most common in Asian countries that have certain roots in Sino-centric culture (chinese), where the whiter one's skin is, the more beautiful they are perceived to be. It's something that evolved over hundreds of years, if not a thousand, which is why poor people are perceived to be darker skinned, while rich, famous, or powerful people have "fairer" skin. It's why K-Pop idols all look like differently styled carbon copies of the same Barbie Doll, but at least Barbie had some color to her.

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, “If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately..” He looked at me and then at that old cancer stick, flicked the ashes one last time, and l swear I saw tears well up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up right then and there. Three years later my Grandpa died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me, “Son, don’t ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 32, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say though, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because watching this video gave me cancer anyway.

Trap music isn't called trap because of the verb 'to trap'. It's because it came from drug dealers who work in trap houses. Now that is a reference to the verb 'to trap' as the term does mean it traps people, because everyone who comes to the house gets trapped there, because of their addiction. Now that the music has moved international and isn't directly related to stacks, rubber bands, whipping, or any other drug paraphernalia, it's lost its meaning. But that is the origin of the term trap music.

I'm an American expat whose been living in Seoul for 11 years. I sometimes go on business trips to China and I have been to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Nanjing, and Dalian. also been to Taiwan and traveled around there. One thing I love about China is how different the cities are. The people, food, atmosphere, architecture, and more are so different and the contrasts are so stark that it's even noticeable and accessible to a foreigner like me. After watching this video I'm now SUPER interested in Chengdu, and I hope I have a chance to experience this city!

About the seeming cultural ignorance of some of these people: Of course, there are MANY pretentious idiots in China who are hopelessly trying to ride the wave of popular foreing, i.e. Western, cultural phenomena, albeit apparently having no meaningful understanding of it at all. But this I think is very much rooted in the total lack of a substantial youth culture and sub-cultural identity there, society just doesn't leave a lot of room for that. There are some very interesting underground communites in Chinese cities, particularly Chengdu, Wuhan or Shanghai, which I think have zestful scenes with very creative and seriously impressive people, but they suffer a lot of repercussions from society and from the authorities. And even worse, once some of these things experience enough of a popularity boom they become ruthlessly commercialised - and this is what happened to Hip Hop in China in recent years, too - it becomes a big, harmless show and an even bigger business for a clueless K-Pop loving mainstream audience, that has no deep connection to any of this, drained of authenticity and realness. Because many young people experience subculture merely as a media phenomenon without "living" it, it is no wonder you will find a lot of clueless wannabes. However, for all I see and care about, these Chengdu-based artists are the coolest thing when it comes to Chinese Hip Hop, and I don't even like Trap that much, but Higher Brothers are pretty good, and I hope they can evolve on that and continue to create their own identity and style, inspiring more people to break out of this desert of dullness that is Chinese mainstream pop culture and lifestyle. 加油兄弟们!

Yeah i have very little patience for the people bitching about it too. Black people in the US have been hella racist to Asians, co opted and disrespected parts of their culture in media even specifically in rap. lil pump obviously the most recent one. For Black Americans to say kinda racist things about and make fun of white people is totally fair lol I have no complaint, but to apply that logic about race relations in the US to the entire world is really dumb and reflects serious ignorance (which is true of all Americans). Hypocrisy isn’t a good look. That being said racism and xenophobia in China is certainly a problem. It was hard for me to tell how much of it was just genuine extreme ignorance vs actual ideas of genetic supremacy since I don’t really speak Chinese. I asked some ppl and they never wanted to be upfront about it but as far as I could tell they like black Americans and black westerners, but they don’t like African immigrants that are poor at least, and they’re likely to assume anyone black is African not American. My impression was moreso ignorance and xenophobia vs actual racism but idk. And more to your point specifically, it’s not like wu tang clan was really deeply knowledgeable about Chinese history culture and struggles lol. And that’s fine, it was still cool, I don’t think that was seen as offensive by Chinese ppl at large. There’s religious rock music and foreign rock music and all kinds that only really share the actual sound of the music not a culture. That’s great, not a problem.

As much as I support the rise of hip-hop in China, it's pretty clear that, while the artists likely know the history, the fans don't know anything about the history/culture/significance. The fans are just appropriating hip-hop for the fashion and turn-up vibes. NYC is no longer a Hip-hop mecca. 69 is the most famous rapper from there lol. 50 cent and ASAP mob is all NYC has, and they are pretty irrelevant right now. And you do realize that there's a difference between indentured servitude, slavery and CHATTEL SLAVERY and that Black Americans who are the ONLY group of people in recorded history to EVER suffer CHATTEL SLAVERY, right? So yes, we are very much so unique in that regard. In fact, one could make the historically-sound argument that it is so-called "Hispanics" who're totally unique and/or special. Every aspect of "Hispanic" culture that's popular is due to it's African roots. Particularly when it comes to "Hispanic" and/or "Latin" music. NOTHING you've done culturally that has any shred of global resonance is without being almost entirely based in Black African influence. Furthermore, where in my original post did I assert that I take issue with non-American Descendants of Slavery (non-ADOS) adopting ADOS culture? What I take issue with is when these same non-ADOS peoples attempt to commit an all out theft of ADOS cultural heritage. However, I understand why you'd attempt to make the intellectually dishonest argument that ADOS culture/heritage doesn't belong to ADOS. Because deep down, you know that we're what YOU and YOUR people aspire to be yet, at the same time, utterly despise. It must really put you at odds with yourself to, on the one hand acknowledge that ADOS culture is so globally dominant but, on the other hand hold such anti-ADOS beliefs.

However, the moment they make statements that attempt to deny that Hip-Hop is in fact and will always be the sole cultural heritage of American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS), that's when I have to chin-check folks. Because despite whatever non-ADOS people gets involved in Hip-Hop, it's ADOS who created Hip-Hop and it's ADOS who continue to be the trendsetters of Hip-Hop. It's ADOS who continues to lead Hip-Hop. I think some of ya twisting things up, in my opinion black people need to be recognized, others are going around and using black culture and saying it’s something for all and it was made for all, and it’s not right, I’m not saying they shouldn’t use black culture at all but like don’t just say it’s for all and this and that like no, whatever the trend is, it was started by black people so say be proud of it, don’t go around saying it’s for all etc etc, cuz Asians are hella quick to come at other people, foreigners etc etc, for using there culture and wanting to take part and appreciate the culture💀, ppl need to be straight up LIKE I do this and that and I like this and that thanks to black people and their culture for bringing this in. And just like cultures have things they don’t really see ok with other people doing then it’s ok it’s what makes their culture special, and black people have a lot of things that make their culture different and unique so don’t go around trying to do everything they do and stuff especially if it makes them feel disrespected. I’m also tired of people saying oh, tHeY tRyNA bE bLaCk, LIKE NO they really not trying to be black, yes they trying to be “bout that life” and try to, ima say steal so ya can understand cuz some people oof, steal the culture and use it, They not tryna have dark skin or anything😂😂😂well some ppl do but that’s for another day!

Sprinkle some media coverage on top of it all and there you have the whole world watching your every move. It's not so much that America sets trends it's that trends are set in America.

Many people are not aware of the complex history in China or its minority groups but as a Black man myself.. I identify with the fact they are utilising Trap as a form of expression in an environment where voices struggle to be heard; that is PRECISELY what black people have used our art and storytelling for, for centuries. It isn't without purpose... communicating ideas through art played a huge role in us achieving many of the freedoms we have today. No doubt that can have its place in most countries on earth. If you do not "get" hiphop or black culture or think its just about being mindfully rebellious... Hopefully this gives a little clarity.. Pop culturE blurs the lines because often its the simplest, most consumer/brand friendly artists that get big record deals...; but from Hiphop to reggae to soul/motown to Jazz to blues... they all did the SAME THING... and speak "to us... and for us".

Black Americans only make up 12% of the American population yet their influence in music throughout the world is utterly mind boggling. Hip Hop is one of the most popular genres, if not the most popular, in Russia and Germany, of all places in the world! If weren't for Black Americans there wouldn't be the musical innovations we have today such as Ragtime, Gospel, Jazz, Blues, Rock and Roll, Barbershop, Doo Wop, Disco, Rumba, Dixieland, Stride, Techno, House, Samba, Reggae, New Jack Swing, Swing, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Groove R&B, Hip Hop etc. If it weren’t for African American descendants of slaves - American music would just be what it has always been: English/Irish folk songs. There would be no Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Adele, Sam Smith, Justin Timberlake, Eminem and a host of others without Black artists. Indeed, for the past century at least, every form of American vernacular music has either been created by African-Americans, or by their white imitators. Indeed, for the past century at least, every form of American vernacular music has either been created by African-Americans, or by their white imitators. African Americans even contributed to the creation of Country music. Country music is primarily a fusion of African American blues and spirituals with Appalachian folk music, adapted for pop audiences and popularized beginning in the 1920s. It was during that time that a man by the name of DeFord Bailey performed his rendition of “Pan America Blues” on one of the biggest shows in country music radio. That said, I despise 99% of Hip Hop music. I think it is deplorable, degrading trash. Black folks should use their musical talents to glorify Jesus Christ!!!!

It would be nice if Vice made a good effort to give people a basic education as to what trap actually is and what its not. The trap is the cycle of selling drugs getting caught, becoming unemployable and unable to take care of your responsibilities, and then resorting back to what you know, selling drugs. Its represented by the sometimes horrible looking house you work out of. You have to be rapping about making or selling drugs from NOTHING. Rapping about using drugs doesn't count. Future, lil baby & Gunna, Sauce walka, Nba youngboy and most rappers rap about a lifestyle, not making or selling drugs. This isn't a subculture. Drill music is 99% about murder and gang shit. Migos rap a lot about selling drugs as do Jeezy, TI, Gucci and ironically Rick Ross. They make trap music.

I don’t consider myself an old head but I listen to a lot of MCs back in the 90s and 80s, my favorites being KRS One, Chuck D, and Slick Rick. I don’t hate trap music, but the majority of these young kids now emerging in China’s hip hop scene doesn’t really know shit about hip hop. Bunch of them r just mumble rappers that even have no clue about legends like Bambaataa or Kool Herc. There are only few OG hip hop groups that I know are lyricists who really focus on the content and keep it real. These newer kids loves to act tough and show off that they smoked weed or something gangsta but guess what, China’s very hard hitting on any kind of drugs and criminal activity. I’m pretty sure they’ve taken one single hit n brag bout it thru their entire music career. Not to mention only very few of them actually have gang related connections or have been in jail. 说唱教父尹相杰都进去了,不比现在某些小逼崽子们gangsta多了hardcore多了?

  • @zschambill

    @zschambill

    5 жыл бұрын

Emin Subasic my problem isn’t really that they don’t know the history, it’s they are not keeping it real. It’s fine if an artist doesn’t know Rakim’s rhyme scheme-it’s not needed when he can write poetic lyrics by himself and stays true to himself. My problem is that what I have indicated in the former statement cannot be easily achieved if one does not know the history. Hip hop as a culture is partially miscommunicated when it was brought overseas. The culture was meant to express oneself-his life and his thoughts on matters. Given the history of the hip hop, it was about black people in the hood trying to exhaust energy and party up, their doings in their culture (e.g. graffiti and break dancing). As the culture and art form evolved, street life, gangs, money and binge spending (because hip hop artists started to get rich) emerged. When people overseas listen to or feel hip hop now, most of them, without historical knowledge, would interpret the culture from the phenomena, that hip hop is about bragging about money, cars, women and drugs, as well as being tough and beef with other people (as these are popular themes among popular tracks out there now). When these people overseas trying to bring hip hop to life in their own countries and cultures, they only take the content from such phenomena, which is very trivial and superficial-this is now hip hop’s essence. To me the beauty of hip hop is about keeping it real, you rhyme about what you actually do, how you actually feel and stuff like these, not faking that you were a gangsta or you deal drugs whatsoever. Lots of young rappers in China only copy the phenomena without understanding it, e.g. they wear red, yellow and green hoodie but don’t know the impacts Bob Marley has on music (and hip hop) (heck, some of them even don’t know who Bob Marley was). In my last sentence in the original reply (the one in Chinese), I mentioned an artist who put out a hip hop album back in 1992 or 1993. Heck his whole music career was pop/folk music but his album was one of the realest Chinese hip hop album I’ve listened to. He didn’t try to act tough or rap about money in his lyrics, instead, he wrote about the local lifestyle from his city (in the song Take it Slow) and his observation of people and society. Compared to current Chinese trap artists who only brag about smoking weed, this dude is much closer to true hip hop.

And for everyone getting upset, you gotta understand that their understanding of our culture is very slim as their information mostly comes from white Americans so that’s why they’re racist at times all the media prior to today has been that we’re second fiddle and were contempt with our place in society, nowadays we do all the cool shit so they see us and want to emulate us just as we did them before. I don’t necessarily have a problem with it but I wish that they could become more aware of the things we do with our own perspective as opposed to just being fed certain trends from white consumers who also don’t grasp it

Trap is a subgenre to gangsta rap made popular by Atlanta about robbing people, selling, making or doing drugs. The reason you got people all the way in china and europe glorifying it is because they seen a whole bunch of rappers glorifying that life and not showing enough of the negative side to scare people away. You don't see them doing drill music because they know they can't do that gangbanging killer lifestyle that Chicago gangstas is doing.
