I would say part of the problem is lose of trust in the institutions (government ,media ,academic) to work for the people

more specifically, institutions have done little in the way of maintaining that trust. it's the obligation of institutions to be trust*worthy* first.

Populism is opportunism. It is the nero mentality that rejoices as the whole society descends into chaos and conflict. These leaders seize the moment when the economy hits it's worst phase... economic systems are not fair to everyone and people face poverty. When they want to blame someone for their poverty instead of the system they resonate with the populist becoz it's easier to blame innocent people in another community than to demand accountability from their own government..which they wud have done if they had real courage. No one goes up against their real oppressors. Even in a school..teachers lash out n punish their students when the real thing that angers them are the school s unfair policies and low pay.

According to Fukuyama, list three countries where it is present and with what impact in those countries. Mention the leaders as well.

Can't agree. There is no rejoicing as the "whole society descends into chaos" but a yearning for its reverse, integrity. But populism is also a mandate of the "people versus the elites" (who have led society into chaos) and a distrust of the very institutions that enable the checks and balances necessary to the continuation of liberal democracy as democracy.

Nationalism and tribalism are the two most powerful ideologies on earth! The evidence for that is when economic hardships hit people they turn to them!

I see opposite, now that people have mostly stomach full they can afford the luxury to go this way ... In the past times when winning bread itself was the issue for most people they use to vote wisely to actually improve their condition not for rhetorics.

His comments on Hungary threatening the stability in this part of Europe is ridiculous. The instability was started by Germany. I would like to see whether Americans would prefer to have Orban or Biden as their leader. I have a guess already.

Is everyone moving in their own direction is better, or, everyone moving in one? Once a government is elected on a proposed agenda, why must they need to justify the very same objectives to those who didn't vote for them?

"Is everyone moving in their own direction is better, or, everyone moving in one? " Neither. You do not want anarchy but you do not want dictatorship either. And that's why we want Liberal Democracy.

I came here because Slavoj Zizek said Fukuyama is an honest conservative in his estimation. I am thoroughly disappointed to say the least. Sounds like an MSNBC 'conservative'. If you think distrust the intelligence communities (three letter institutions) is somehow destabilizing, you have missed the mark.

It's an interesting analysis but unfortunately replete with straw men as is often the way when people want to attack Nationalism. Misrepresenting your enemy makes him easier to attack.

I would argue that Fukuyama is being rather one-sided in his view of the populist figure as an inherent threat to society's institutions. He is correct about the importance of institutions within society. However, I also consider the overall goal of all institutions as the common good of society.

This is a little late, but... Zack, I think that you are wrong, badly wrong, on the facts. I emphasize, on the facts. Except for government institutions (and many would not agree with that exception) most institutions are founded, and operate, to attain goals that are shared by the founders, who are almost always promoting the interests of some group or groups. That's why they found them!!! In theory, the idea of democracy is to have a government that mediates among the often-conflicting goals of the various groups. It is very clearly not the people as individuals to whom a democratic government responds, but rather the groups that the individuals form to advance their own goals. Just look around you!
