The Rise, Fall, And Rebirth Of The Ford Bronco - Cheddar Examines

When the Ford Bronco hit the market in the 1960s, it revolutionized the auto market. Over time, the Bronco became a cult classic, a Hollywood icon, and a symbol of Americana. But the Bronco abruptly fell from fame and production was halted. So why is Ford bringing back the Bronco today?

My dad got many offers on his 1966 Bronco. His was super sweet: he put a Chevy 350 in, A/C, aircraft cabin lights, aircraft air compressor (with front and rear outlets), big tires, all kinds of things. He used it a ton though, lots of offroading. Dunno what he sold it for, but it sat in his driveway for 20 years before he finally took someone up on their offer (he got a couple offers a year).

According to recent information, the new Bronco might not have a V8. It will get the 2.3 & 2.7 Ecoboost. If you plan on taking it off road, get the V6 because it makes more output torque torque at lower RPM's and feels nicer. I'm guessing Toyota has planned changes for the 4Runner. It's about time that vehicle needs a bump in EPA MPG or it might fail emissions in CARB states.

  • @cpufreak101

I do know thanks to an accidental listing by a tire store chain, it's already confirmed that the Bronco will get the same 2.3L ecoboost as the Ranger. in theory though any engine the Ranger already gets should also work for the Bronco (which if you look overseas, includes stuff like the 2.7L and 3.5L ecoboosts, a 3.2L diesel, and potentially a 5.0 V8 for Australia only)

I like the Bronco alot but it just doesn't stack up to the utilitarianism of the old CJ models. Jeeps had power take off shafts directly mounted to the engine so you could buy accessory parts like water pumps for fire fighting services (civilian mind you, so you could fight fires on your own property if you lived in a rural area, you didn't have to wait for the fire department to show up) crane and cherry picker attachments, tractor attachments, dumptruck bed, backhoe shovel, etc.

Another thing to point out was that they didn't use the body of Ford's design in WWII MBs. They did use Ford vehicles during the war effort but the DOD specifically gave Ford the design specs that they had to follow. You can tell the Fords apart from the Willy's because they had 9 slot and later laterally slotted grilles, while the Willy's had the 7 slot that was trademarked and the modern jeep still uses until this day. The government gave these specs to several other companys to use fir war time production like Toyota, Mahindra and Nissan later on. You guys didn't do your research on this one.

Why the bronco died: - Less interesst over time and the Chevy Blazer which was based on the C/K Truck plattform autsold it. In 1972 the Blazer got sold more than double as much as the bronco. Soon after Ford based there Bronco on there own F-Series Pick Up. (Trucks weren´t affected by the law changes in response to the oil crisis as much als other vehicles) -The demand in 4-door SUVs got bigger and while the Blazer got 4-door options as it becaim more a SUV than an offroader, Ford desided to replace the bronco with the Explorer. -The OJ Simpson chase was sth. good for Bronco sails. It didn´t get bad reputation Ford has released a Podcast over the bronco if s.b has more interest: Bring Back Bronco Podcast: Episode 1 - The American Dream - 1963 to 1969 | Ford - KZread

At 4:57 that looks like a LandCruiser to me. Even the word across the radiator grill looks like the word "LandCruiser". I had a light blue removable top LandCruiser in 1978 that lo0oked just like this vehicle. Or maybe Toyota copied it almost completely to look the same. Except that the spare wheel on the LandCruiser was on the tailgate.

They really shouldn’t bring it back. Their plans to bring it back are ugly but it’s also an impractical SUV. Karen can’t put the kids in a 2 door SUV

I do wonder if it's planned for an upcoming generation as the platform it's on may not work well with electrification (it's based off the Current ranger, which is a 7 year old platform at this point). I recall hearing rumors about a hybrid in the works though.
