The Ford Bronco was a Small Wonder | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 07

The original Bronco was a logic-based response to the Jeep CJ-5, Toyota Land Cruiser, and other 4x4s favored by aging, ex-GIs in the early 1960s who wanted creature comforts. And it was a massive success - in that very small market.
It wasn't until the Big Bronco, modeled after the enormous Chevrolet K5 Blazer 12 years later, that Ford achieved real sales success.
But the small, billygoat Bronco has become a legend because of its incredibly simple good looks, powerful engines, and (compared to its rivals) easy on-road comfort.
History is repeating itself - the 2022 Bronco follows the same recipe, but this time, Ford knows a 4-door will sell in larger volumes. So the new car will be sold in both Big and Little versions. And we suspect it'll be the little, 2-door Bronco that will wind up in videos like this one day.

I remember kinda falling in love with one of these when I was an apprentice painter. One thing I had to do to complete my apprenticeship was completely repaint a car inside and out. The car I was given to paint was a shabby ford bronco. The paint was bland and destroyed but the interior was pristine. The owner wanted it repainted with a two tone paint job. Black on the bottom half and gun metal grey on the top half. After spending many hours making this thing look amazing I kinda fell in love with it.

Well as someone that lived thru that era the real reason why Ford, Jeep & International didn't that many 4X4's was the fact the public was still enthralled with the go fast cars coming out of Detroit and the whole pickup thing didn't really take off until 1968 - 69 with the advent of more stylish and comfortable trucks that women at that time wouldn't object to being seen in. Believe me because I remember some women complaining about riding in those Fords that road so hard they would shake their boobs off.

Love how they have old school Warn locking hubs. I remember back in the early 90's when you could by these in great shape for less than $5K. I had High school friend whose dad/family were into first Gens. I bet they had 20 broncos in various conditions. Little did they know they had a burgeoning fortune at hand. I've seen basket case Broncos that go for 10K.

But the F150 was no where close to the off roader the BII was, so your impressions are going to be tempered by your use. My BII was an off roader, my F150 a farm truck @@christopherdouglas8471

Like I found out when I bought my 74 Bronco, if you don't want the frontend to "chatter" when you're on the throttle, in 4 wheel drive, you've outta double up on the shocks, Tom's Bronco sells a fairly quick and easy adapter kit....that stock horsepower number is funny, I'm runnin a Ford 347 stroker that's puttin over 400 at the wheels...😁🤘🏻🇺🇸

Actually you look at the late 60s alternatives. Jeep, Short wheelbase Landcruiser, Short SWB Patrol, SWB Landrover, Inter Scouts and the Ford looks pretty good. In the 80s a government radio tech friend of mine gave up on the SWB Landcruiser as it shook his spares to death. Got a Bronco which did a similar job on tracks [but not off road] but that kept on breaking. Chassis suspension engine. Great when it was going but too often broken. We never got the first generation Bronco here in Oz, it was a Landrover market that was snuck into by the Japanese as well as Scouts. These days Landrover are a small part of the market and more likely found in affluent areas. Close to service centres!! Though the Landcruiser has got so big and fat. And expensive. The Prado is probably as big as an 80 series. And they weigh 2 tonne. I own a 100 series,, excellent highway manner, comfortable and quiet. BUT go and try a bit of minor offroading on bush tracks and it drags the spare wheel in creek crossings and bellies [well protected] as well. The old SWB would go far further, in fact most shorties would. BUT a great towcar unlike the SWB stuff

Oh man, for about a year I drove a beat up and broke down cab-forward 1966 ford van with a 170ci straight six and a three on the tree. It got me around and was usually pretty fun to drive, but i hated when it would get jammed in second gear or shoot fire out of the carburetor. I bet it and the broncos from the era drove quite similarly when they were new.

And yet, my 65 y/o aunt went and bought a Wagoneer. Go figure. And she loved it. So did her friends, and a few of them went out and got one, too. Comfy, not too tall to get into, short enough to fit in the garage (unlike the blazer and full size bronco come 1978). And they made it several years BEFORE the little bronc.
