The Rise And Fall Of Victoria’s Secret

When Victoria's Secret entered the market in the 1980s, it revolutionized the retail of women's undergarments. Previously, women viewed their bras on a binary - strictly functional for day-to-day or fancy for special occasions. Victoria's Secret combined the structure and function of day-to-day bras with the fun prints and feel of fancier bras. But 30 years later, the brand is falling behind the times as consumer priorities shift and younger brands like Aerie and Rihanna's Savage x Fenty adapt.
The lingerie brand, owned by L Brands, has reported negative same-store sales for the past three years now, as women steer clear of its bedazzled bras and underwear for comfortable pieces in cooler colors. That's as a new cohort of start-ups like Adore Me, Third Love, Lively, Cuup and Knix are resonating with younger consumers as they surge in popularity on social media channels like Instagram.
Wall Street analysts and investors alike are unsure if L Brands will be successful in reinventing Victoria's Secret's increasingly obsolete bras business. Even a recent slew of heavy promotions doesn't appear to be moving products off of shelves, according to UBS analyst Jay Sole, who's been tracking promotional activity in stores and online.
"The pivotal question on the stock is can L Brands rehabilitate the Victoria's Secret brand image," Sole said in a note to clients earlier this week, ahead of L Brand's monthly sales report. He said he noticed Victoria's Secret's January promotions "increased significantly" from a year ago. And that typically means a company didn't sell enough during the holiday season, thus needed to drop prices to try to lure shoppers in.
Despite its struggles, though, Victoria's Secret is still a behemoth in its industry today.
It's been estimated L Brands would account for roughly 63 percent of sales in the lingerie industry in the U.S. in 2018, according to a study put out by IBISWorld last October. The group defines the industry to include retailers that predominantly sell intimate apparel, including bras, panties and other lingerie items, for women. No other companies were on track to account for more than 5 percent of revenues, while American Eagle's Aerie brand had 3.5 percent and Chico's Soma brand had 3 percent, IBISWorld said at the time the report was released.» Subscribe to CNBC: cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC

    @Shispirina I have to disagree with you. My college roommate was a hefty girl and she always found underwear in her size at Victoria Secret. She was pretty huge, Now I know they never wanted overweight women in their fashion shows. But they also never wanted the waif type models. They liked women's bodies like Tyra Banks which was full bodied and properly proportioned.

  • @natalies753

    @Shispirina The VS sizes went really big OMG how big do people expect them to go!?! I wouldn't consider it a size restriction. At 100lbs and 5'5" they didn't even go down to my size in many of their clothing items. Wow I couldn't imagine being so large as to not fit into VS broad range of sizes! Damn time for people to look at what they are eating and drinking - soft drinks and McDonalds don't create people of a healthy size/weight, VS is wise to not accommodate the morbidly obese. Plus I don't want to be paying for the extra materials for fat people to buy clothes from the same range as me - there should be independent stores for the morbidly obese to shop at where they can cover the cost of the extra materials out of their own pocket and the clothes can be made to fit their body shape (the patterns would need to change as body shapes change considerably from those who would fit the normal size range VS offers and the morbidly obese who couldn't fit VS).

    Natalie NZ i don’t fit at VS, and i’m 5’1 and a size 0, but in bras I wear a 28K. I’m almost underweight and their bras are too small for me. Bigger people aren’t the only busty people. No brands in the US make a size that fits me, and it’s not asking for too much to be able to buy undergarments.

    “In 2016, Victoria's Secret stopped selling swimwear, shoes, accessories and apparel that were only sold in online Victoria's Secret stores to stay more focused on the lingerie, fragrances and sleepwear that are still available in stores and online. In 2017 Victoria's Secret began to put more emphasis on bralettes (bras without underwire, often intended to be worn visibly) and sports bras (under the Victoria Sport label) to appeal to a younger customer base. The company announced that it would bring back swimwear starting from spring 2019.” Took me barely 5min to find out the real reason. Anyone with common sense knows you don’t go from record sales in 2015 to a loss in 2016 purely because of some “social justice trend”

    The underwear fall apart in the wash. I'm not hand washing a basic pair of underwear, the equivalent style of a pair of Hanes. Neon looks incredibly cheap. I wear a 36D and it's hard to find that very common size in store. Not only that, women who can afford their clothes don't want to have ugly logos and the word "pink" on everything. Their beauty items look cheap and if I can afford a $60 bra, I don't want the equivalent of a Coty body spray. The stuff looks cheap, the stores are a mess, and they have too many sales where it's a free for all where you have to dig through messy bins to find underwear.

    They destroyed their brand with Pink. Pink has taken over the VS stores, and seems to be targeted to teens. I’m 24 and feel like I’m too old to shop there. I think the brand PINK was their biggest downfall for me. (according to this video the brand PINK appealed to the young girls) I used to go to Victoria’s Secret and buy a few things occasionally. Eventually I saw a bunch of 12-year-olds and such coming into the store. I noticed all the makeup had nothing but shimmer! there wasn’t a single matte eyeshadow!!!! It occurred to me that they were really marking to these young girls. Personally, I did not want to be wearing what the 12 year-old next-door was wearing...

How am I gonna wear a glittery strappy bra under a v-neck tshirt? Or any light fabric? Absolutely not worth it. 4. At least they have PINK going for them, which seems to be doing fairly well. Victoria Secret was once luxurious. Now every mall in the US has a Victoria Secret. I remember when Bath and Body Works was a cute all natural skincare shop. You would walk into a dark spa-like shop and could smell the essential oils. Everything was natural and beautifully packaged. L Brands are overpriced, yet lacks quality, class, and creativity. These stores started off with great ideas, and LBrand wants to saturate the market. Just like starbucks (the McDonalds of coffee houses). Oh, how I miss the little European cafés 😌that would make you a creamy latté. I would sit and talk to my mom enjoying that warm cup in my hands with a fresh biscotti. Now we pay $5+ for a hot cup of milk, syrup and and ounce of burnt espresso. Corporations have taken the intimacy out of shopping.

    I can't believe they didn't mention one of the reasons VS has declined in sales is their sizing! I worked at VS for 4 years (2013-17) and this was a constant issue for women -- and myself! While working there I was about 120 pounds wearing an XS/S but was 32DDD in bra size. I often told my customers that if I gained any weight, I'd no longer be able to fit the brand I worked for. The average bra size in America is 34DD yet VS only went to DDD until recently . . . Nonetheless, this still is major issue because they offer larger band and cup sizes but make it difficult to access because the customer will have to order online because the size isn't available in store. As a second job, I worked in Dillard's lingerie dept and the sizing was much better, so I hate to say it, but I would often recommend my VS to head to other retailers like Dillard's because while the bras weren't glamorous, they were functional, comfortable, and made the woman look good in her clothes. Ultimately, in my last year at VS, I grew out of their sizing. They need a wider range of sizes and cup shapes such as full coverage.

  • @ube4856
    @ube48565 жыл бұрын

    VS has fallen because: 1) quality needs to be better 2) need to carry larger sizes!! 3) definitely bring back swimwear and clothing 4) stop catering to a younger crowd, it's starting to feel a bit juvenile (I mean that's why you have the pink section) 5) maybe revamp the stores. are they feeling a bit out dated? 6) pick better models that are good brand reps. And they're getting too skinny. think: Tyra, Heidi, Giselle, Doutzen 7) have better shows: bring back the original runway mixes, maybe less music acts (there were 8 this year, but maybe it's to make up for less model-personalities they have now-a-days), stop recycling the same costume themes.

    I wanted to be a VS Angel when I was younger because they were so beautiful, as I’ve grown up I’ve noticed I’d never be one because of my body type. Due to that, and they test their cosmetics on animals, I don’t support them.

  • @Lizzie-ve7kt
    @Lizzie-ve7kt2 жыл бұрын

    One thing I’ve found interesting with the brand is that they seem to have gotten more and more unrealistic over the years. While the original angels were still obviously stunningly gorgeous with perfect bodies, many of them actually got work with the company because they were considered too curvy or busty to fit into the high fashion sample sizes of the time. And while their shows included a mix of both the waif era supermodels and the more bombshell bodied supermodels, I found that doing so was actually more inclusive than what they have now with every single model having pretty much the exact same body measurements as one another, plus they all seem to have extremely tiny waists with their chests seemingly only existing whenever they’re wearing a massive push up bra so I always found it funny that they’re selling bras increasingly using models who don’t even have to wear one everyday.

But the NAACP has every right to deny them a "black scholarship" meant for natural black people. It doesn't mean the NAACP is "trans-phobic" in a racial sense. The same logic applies with Victoria's Secret or Miss America turning down men.

    true. I have a vs credit card and kinda regret getting it cause they are expensive and plaid out. I like their stuff but it's not hip. They're marketing needs to get current like how Rihanna managed to make her marketing current appealing to instagram users and the trends of modern day slang. Her stuff truly isnt all that better than VS but it's somewhat reasonably priced and targets all sizes of women.

    My gf is a stacked 36DDD. Victoria's Secret doesn't carry that size so we've never shopped there. Her favourite brands are mostly European. Getting handmade tailored bras also isn't as expensive as it might seem, because although it's $200-300 the bra will last decades, fits perfectly, looks amazing and no cutting in or pinching. My gf finds a lot of cheap brands like VS offers sell designs which cut into the shoulders or have painful underwire in place of structured support.
