Kento Momota's exceptional skill and relentless spirit on the badminton court have been a beacon of inspiration for me. His mastery of the game and unwavering determination showcased the heights that can be reached through hard work and dedication. Hearing about his retirement leaves me with a profound sense of sadness, as his presence in the sport has been truly remarkable. Momota's departure from professional badminton marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire countless players, including myself, to strive for greatness both on and off the court.

Imagine what Momota could've done if it weren't for that one accident. He would have been unstoppable. But the fact that he has the strength to continue playing in tournaments is an achievement in itself. If he hasn't given up on himself, neither should we.

In 2013, I watched Momota for the first time in the all Japan championship. And his performance in the tournament got 15-year-old me into badminton. As soon as I entered high school, I joined the school badminton team. During my high school time without any teachers with badminton skill, he'd been the only coach for me. I watched almost all the tournaments he participated in to learn from the way he swings, how he moves on the court, etc. He brought me, with only 2 years of badminton experience, to 8th position in the prefectural high school championship. He's been my hero.

Momota has suffered from such adversary during his playing career, especially in regards to his olympic runs, near the end of the 2010s Momota had the badminton world in his hands - he really had no challenger - it seemed like he was destined to dominate for years to come. Of course that was not meant to be but I think Momota is slowly making it back and I am happy to see as he is one of the greatest players to watch in modern badminton history.

His life story is full of ups and downs and his old ups were taken away from an accidet and back injury. I truly sympathize with him. I have thought about it many times, wishing there hadn't been an accident and back injury. But he could win in Korea in 2023. he overcame the obstacle. It is why I think he is a legend. I still remember the first time when I saw his match on TV live (should be around 2014-15), I watched his whole game, I never did that, especially for someone who is not famous at that time. I was so addicted to his solid fundamentals, and at that point of time, I told my dad that this guy is gonna be world no.1 and dominant one day in the near future. And time proves me right. What the car accident and Covid took from Momota we will never know, both himself and his head coach said he has fully recovered, but on the court he played like he has aged 10 years. His post accident form remained me of LD just before he retired, slow on defense and weak attacking game, frequently losing to second tier players. Momota’s once impenetrable defense that frustrated Axelsen so much became porous, always half a step too slow to the net, couldn’t get down low fast enough for smashes, and when his opportunity comes, often hit a drop shot or clear back instead of attacking. For LD it was Father Time, but Momota has lost something mentally or physically or maybe both from the accident.
