The rise and fall of Grenada's New Jewel Movement w/Don Rojas

In 1979 a socialist revolution under the leadership of the New Jewel Movement took power in Grenada. For the next four years, the Caribbean island nation engaged in a daring experiment of popular sovereignty and democracy, tackling questions of education, inequality, and hunger head-on. But the revolution didn't last. Weakened by infighting and eventually deposed by a US military invasion, the Grenadian Revolution met its end in 1983. Some 40 years later, former Press Secretary Don Rojas speaks with The Real News Board Member Bill Fletcher on the course of the Grenadian Revolution-its triumphs, challenges, and eventual fall.

Yes, we watched from across the Caribbean sea. And we all loved and supported Maurice Bishop. We all rooted for Grenada. I was a teenager, studying at the Social Science Faculty of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies when he was assassinated. We felt his death as a great loss to us all. A intelligent man who cared for his people. If he had made it, there would have been a chance for us all to break the yoke of imperialism that still restrains us to this day. We are independent in name only.

I remember crying on my way to junior college as an 18 year old hearing about the US invasion by Ray gun. The first non covert invasion since Vietnam.

As a Grenadian who was part of the training and mobile system. However I migrated to Trinidad and Tobago three months before the rovulation. I always bought into his philosophy of socioeconomically development plan which I had participated in before migrating. Today I feel just as motivated to carry on his legacy, knowing the benefits it provides for real freedom for the entire region of Africa, and beyond. Caribbean leaders miss a great opportunity to raise the quality and stand of life in the region. But it's never too late to act. Bishop will always remain alive for all those who lives he impacted impacted. He was a great soul, may his soul continue influence our directions as a nation 💗🙏.

Wrong... Cuba was and has been always prtected by the CIA and the USA. They have all this years made us believe Castro was an enemy when in fact he was always part of the CIA weapons against its own people.

With keen interest I intently listed to every word in anticipation of the Reagan invasion. An iconic interview of an extremely disappointing angering historic event with US Republican influence glossed over. Once again the perhaps wise yet subtle brush skipping the intrigues and debauchery of Reagan operatives was anticlimatic. Never the less thank you with gratitude for this informative interview. Possibly you'd consider an in depth sequel inclusive of Reagan's political exploitation of Granada and it's usefulness to divert attention. If only our heroic leaders would be left to fully blossom!

@@DKing-sc3nt Nonsense, the founders of Zionist Israel hatched their plan with the help of Great Britain whom trained the racist nationalists just 150 years ago. The Zionist openly state their mission is to eradicate Palestinians from their own land. Netanyahu his far right cabinet and the head of the IDF have all physically stated similar intent. We are witnessing their final solution - extermination of a subjugated indigenous people occupied in their own land with no human rights. Hamas used to justify genocide.
