The Rise and Fall of G.I. Joe
G.I. Joe has a history full of stops, starts, and surprisingly few on-screen deaths. But knowing the history of G.I. Joe is just half the battle. In this episode of Throwback, Erin talks about the origins of G.I. Joe, the sprawling (and sometimes strange) extended universe it created, and the critical role a misprinted fingernail played in its success.
We'll cover the G.I. Joe cartoon and the ever-helpful G.I. Joe PSAs, and even reveal Stephen King's connection to the Joe-verse.

I was 6 years old in 1968 when I was given my first GI Joe...He was one of the originals...a year later, after the moon landing '69, I was given an Apollo capsule with a space suit for Joe...He was a great toy...later, I joined the Air Force, where I served for 27 years...and I still work for the Dept. of the USAF today as a government civilian...I thank my Joe for inspiring me in my career...

I was 7 in '68 and was terribly disappointed when some spoil-sport older kids told me it was a Mercury capsule that my astronaut GI Joe came with and it couldn't go to the Moon. Then I got Legos. I was a brick mason for ~30 years.
This was a wonderful episode! My brother and I collected GI Joe exclusively as kids, and had a hefty collection of both figures and vehicles. I always have a soft spot for General Hawk and Lifeline, as they were the two very first figures I got. I adore that scene in the animated movie. Practically still frames and Lifeline on a field phone saying "Good news! Duke's alive!" after a big battle to save the planet! Even the first time I saw the movie I burst out laughing at how ridiculous the scene was! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I believe Duke was not killed off because of the backlash/unexpected strong negative reaction Hasbro received from having Optimus Prime killed off in the 1986 Transformers film.
Thanks for all the info. I'm glad to hear all about it and knowing is half the battle. 😀

The other half being equal parts red and blue lasers.
My favorite Joe was Beachhead. I wish that G.I. Joe were still around when my son was of “action-figure” age. I have tons of fond memories playing with them with my dad. He had the original 12” ones. I know that it was a 22 minutes commercial but it was also a morality play. I grew up to serve 20 years in the Air Force and the patriotism, righteous integrity and get it done attitude that show enforced in me served me well. And I know I wasn’t the only old soldier to hold those lessons from that show.
I hope this series keeps going, it's a lot of fun
Lots of love for Joe, Larry Hama is an underrated genius (he even did a sword kata with my prop when I cosplayed as Snake-Eyes at a show 15 years ago). I did my first Snake-Eyes cosplay in 1999 and haven't stopped, too much fun... I bring an etch-a-sketch to say LOL.
I still have that exact red Sony My-First-Walkman you have in the background and it still works!
The reason why Duke was spared in the animated movie was due to the backlash from when they killed off a bunch of characters in The Transformers The Movie, which was released before the Joe movie. The scene of Duke dying was already made, but the blacklash convinced them to drop the line about going into a coma.
Being a kid in this time, those outro tips at the end of the shows are easily remembered
I remember I was the only boy who raised his hand in grade school when teacher asked who plays with dolls. When asked to explain I said I had GI Joes. The other boys were enraged. “They are not dolls! They are action figures!!! They shouted.

I asked Santa for a GI Joe in 1969. I joined the US Army in 1982.
Not named Snake Eyes? Storm Shadow (when he turned to the side of Angels).
Obviously storm shadow is a favourite of many but I always lived a little know character named ‘Shockwave’, he was a SWAT team specialist and was just cool looking when I was a kid.
yeah before Snake-Eyes was our favorite ninja, we was our favorite Commando; no swords, no wolf, just an Uzi, a rucksack, and an explosives satchel.
"Pork chop sandwiches" Favorite figure/character: Destro, Major Bludd, Zartan, Scrap Iron, the Dreadnoks, Baroness, any villain really.
How about an episode about Russ Doll Troll (I don't remember the original name hah). Those with hair standing high up and usually naked. In Poland at some point there were everywhere, in every house, even though they look terrible and scary

We actually discussed that idea yesterday! We made a video a while back about a woman with a great troll doll collection: facebook.com/watch/?v=515523299186417
My favorite Joes were Low Light and the basic Cobra infantry. My favorite vehicle was the H.I.S.S. tank.
I was a teenager in the 70s. My cousin who was quite younger was all about the Joe. My son born in 82 was all about He-Man and the ThunderCats. Though the turtles were cool for him too

I was able to get the rare William "the refrigerator"Perry well several for family members
To us late 60s kids, the later 8 inch "Joes" were a joke. The smaller ones were an insult. Most of us only had one "Joe" but we all had tons of accessories. I noticed the inverted thumb nail pretty quick but never paid much attention to it.

The big ones were real good , they lasted a long time . I used my uncle’s cause I’m from late 70- mid 80s. I personally had more experience with the little ones. They were little more versatile with the movements , vehicles and abundance of different characters. Downfall with them is they were easier to loose pieces being so small

What did you do with just one joe? (I did mostly fist fights and kicks - little 3.75" ones - so I wonder what was on the program - putting on the clothes and accessories?)

@@simonpaquet7161 LOL My brother had one too. We went on a lot of missions together, but never located the enemy.
GI Joe became a huge force in India too, that many brands created their own clones

And some of those went on to be great on their own.
"articulated joints, which allowed the toys to kneel down to get behind enemy lines" what... what do you think enemy lines are?
My favorite is Blowtorch. Not for anything official, but for PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!
In about 1986 or 87 I was a little 6 to 7 year old girl who loved to play with boy toys. My mom thought it would be a good idea for me to make some girl friends instead of always hanging out with my older brother’s friends and maybe be a little more dainty and girly. This girl was a neighbor’s daughter, about a year younger than me. I came over to her place to play and all she wanted to play was house. I really wanted to play GI Joe but she wanted to play mom and wanted me to play the daddy. I decided to just have my doll start all out war against her Barbie since she wouldn’t listen to me. I “shot” her doll but she kept saying that I didn’t and she didn’t want to play that. I realized that I had to make her understand what that meant, so I said “no, I shot your Barbie, she’s dead” a proceeded to take the Barbie’s head right off by the hair. I couldn’t believe how upset she was over this doll. It’s not like the head doesn’t pop back on I said to her. Not long after that, my mom was there to pick me back up and I was never again asked to play with other girls. Thanks to my brother all I played with was GI Joes, WWF wrestlers, and action figures of the A-Team and didn’t touch a barbie until my teens.

I loved Snow Job when I was a kid. I had the action figure and I thought it was so cool that he used skis and could move around on snow. Living in Florida and never actually seeing snow, I definitely had the wrong idea that snow was very difficult to traverse and it was always treacherous. LOL

Haha funny anecdote - I understand you: 80s boys toys were awesome
Man, I wish they'd bring back gi joe like even a card game or something I just miss Snake Eyes
*The public service messages taught me 3 things :* *#1:* Never get less than 12 hours of sleep *#2:* Never play cards with a guy who has the same first name of a city. *#3:* Never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. *Yo Joe !!! 🇺🇸* *"NUFF SAID"™*
Interesting facts about that massive carrier. An extra bedroom just for a toy? Wow. I don't think G.I. Joe really got foot of the ground in my country to begin with and it certainly was gone by the time I was born. I was an Action Man kid ^ -^
Just, and I know I’m missing the point, but if I’m going to be real; How many people here STILL play with downed power lines? Did a sick jump with my 10-Speed, and flew over one while it crackled, last Sunday! The wind storms in the spring and fall make power wire jumps into something I can do at least twice a year… It’s pretty tight.
Outback and Firefly
Can I hope for a metal gear?
My family has a lot of Navy history so Shipwreck was probably my fave... Nowadays, tho, Shipwreck GIF's are *totally my Dad* . ⚓️😂♾️
Yo Joe! My favorite is Rock n roll.
I wanted one and I got laughed at because I'm female the one that I wanted was the one where he the big one with the beard had to find the mummy
Gung Ho!
If I knew what I know now 🤬, I would have kept my toys, had the black and white Gi joe with the jeep, also the bionic man you name it I probably had it damn 😪😪
Kung-fu grip probably because of Bruce Lee and Americans' fascination with Kung-fu at the time
pork-chop sandwiches.
It's 2022 I guess I'll admit that that Batman action figure that came in the mail this week is really just a Batman action doll. A bad a$$ looking one but when it boils down to it a doll. I'm okay with that.
Wow! Adults knew nearly nothing about children, especially boys, in the 1960s! ~5:00 They didn't even think to gather data directly from the children themselves. Did they assume that their parents knew what their children want and that "children should be seen and not heard"?
Fensler Film dubs anyone?

Yes! We still quote those around my house. "Yo kid, I'm a computer. Stop all the downloading."
SO the Joes could have been part of the MCU.
Hasbro Toys: selling endless war, since 1983
Cobra Commander for president!
I recall using actual potatoes.
I married GI Joe. True story.
Why would Weston have the right to sue? He sold the concept I'd G.I.Joe for 100k. I can see him being upset about his decision to get the fast cash instead of the royalties but that was his choice.

He may have had marketing ideas as well that had been discussed but not mentioned in the contract he eventually signed. He may have had proof that linking it to a movie was his original idea that Hasbro never bought; given when the lawsuit was filed.
Porkchop sandwiches!
Baroness and Lady Jaye are my favorites. Growing up I never liked Scarlett. Always thought she was too soft and overly girly where Lady Jaye could handle anything
Let’s hope Will doesn’t see this
