The Rise and Fall of Driver

In the late 1990s, the PlayStation was abound with racing games. Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, Ridge Racer, and many more provided players with plenty of hours of breakneck entertainment behind digital steering wheels.
Among these games, however, was a decidedly different experience from Newcastle-based developer Reflections Interactive. Simply titled Driver, the game focused more on emulating the thrill of Hollywood-style car chases than on pure racing, allowing players to unleash their inner Steve McQueen across the United States’ roughest roads. The game was immensely successful, and quickly spawned a lesser, yet ambitious sequel that allowed players to exit and hijack cars nearly a year before Rockstar allowed players to do the same in Grand Theft Auto III.
Unfortunately, the subsequent popularity and quality of the Grand Theft Auto games would prove to be an albatross around Driver’s neck. Unable to escape the former series’ transcendental fame, Reflections would gradually inject more and more of its open-world trappings into Driver, leading to some major embarrassments, and the gradual loss of the franchise’s identity.
Finally, after switching multiple publishers and coming to terms with Driver’s strengths, Reflections would transition the series back into pure, car-chasing action with 2011’s Driver: San Francisco. The cost of doing so left Reflections uninterested in doing much else with the series - but resulted in an immensely entertaining experience; one that righted its predecessors’ missteps, while offering clever new ideas that helped release it from Grand Theft Auto’s shadow.
This is the rise and fall of Driver.

DRIV3R was one of the first games I got on the PS2. I was so young that I overlooked and never noticed how broken and empty the game was. I've tried to revisit the game since and it's impossible for me to immerse myself in this world that I spent hours in as a seven year old kid. I wish I could go back. The story was so mysterious. Not to mention the soundtrack. A game that despite being broken and unfinished, is one that will always hold a special place in my heart.

O M G, i think we lived the same fcking childhood. Driv3r was like the first of my ps2 games, and I was around 4-5 at the time, so I didnt know much more than to just run from police and sometimes follow the route it's clearly showing on the screen. I had my uncle who was like 12 at the time help me go through some missions and tasks, but I remembered Driv3r as a great game that I very much enjoyed a lot. Around 4 years ago, I was really bored so I decided to try some of the old titles I played, but now with a different perspective and mind. I thought that understanding the story would be a new experience, but Driv3r stayed the same. Almost no story at all, crashing into everyone and running from police all the time. Guess it was a perfect game for a 5 year old me.

Yup. Driv3r had alot going for it, if only they had polished it properly. AI and on-foot sections were terrible, AI police had this ridiculous rubber band effect, lots of stupid glitches, and the story would've been memorable had the gameplay not been so rough around the edges. Car physics were good, not great. I still loved rolling around looking for fun and mischief in open world mode. As flawed as it was, Driv3r made True Crime LA look like an actual turd (because it was)

But in a way I'm glad it was like it was cause those glitches made it even more fun. lol The real crime here is that Driver 2 never got a PC release! Driver was kinda perfect. The car physics were so awesome, and in the days before we had analogue controllers, you had a dedicated "burnout" button. That was awesome for us young budding hoons. The cheat options of damage off meant you quickly learned that if had a cop car was on it's side, and you hit the roof lightbar on just the right angle, you would be sent flying up into the sky.

Don't forget the "fast steer" button. We need those back in driving games imo. It basically gave you the option to drive slower and more precise, but when needed you could flick the car around and create insanely satisfying maneuvers. Instead of a guaranteed crash in other games, it would be a close call or narrow escape. Giving the player more control is always good imo.

GTA was top down and fun, Driver gave that 3d world I craved for. I have played all the Driver games that featured on consoles and Stuntman which yes was insanely difficult but bloody fun. Lmao forreal dude? Thats actually hilariously awesome to me bc when Driver came out in '99, I was still merely just 3 years old, I was born in '96, ya see. I had it when it came out cause my Dad owned a PS1, Dreamcast, N64, Sega Genesis & Saturn, and a few other classic consoles, and he LOVED games like Driver. So, I played Driver, Driver 2, and DRIV3R for years, up until around 2004 when GTA SA dropped, and replaced the Driver series as my love affair game lol. All 3 Driver games still got more play from me (and prolly my dad too haha) than even GTA III and GTA Vice City though STILL!! Haha But yea so anyways. To the point. When I was a kid playing Driver and Driver 2, and even still w/ DRIV3R, I had 2 PRIMARYA (Obviously I invented some new idea at LEAST once per day lol) "Pretend Fantasies" or "Make Believe Stories" or whatever you'd wanna call it, for the games. One was I would choose/find cars that looked similar to cars from any one of the SEVERAL high octane "car Chase" type movies i would watch w/ my dad back then and loved (not the best example but Smokey & The Bandit is one of them for sure), and then, once I had my chosen car, I'd speed around the map running from the One Time (cops) and pretending I was controlling and/or IN one, or even many, of said movies!! So, my other playtime fantasy for the Driver games? Well, haha, funny enough..it was EXACTLY the same thing as what YOU described YOU used to do as well! Basicslly pretend the WHOLE DAMN CITY (Map) was basically just one immeasurably, unbelievably, incredibly, immensely massive and absolutely positively fucking INSANE-ass "Demolition Derby" of sorts, in which I could/would essentially run around making cars, just like you chose to put it basically, more or less, make them FIGHT each other!!! Hahaha..lol so yea. Thank you for your comment..ya brought back some FANTASTIC memories from being a kid playing oldschool (between 1985 and 2005/2006) games, hanging w/ my dad, and, of course, the silly, yet amazingly cool and fun little fantasy type, make believe things I'd frequently invent/come up with when/while playing my favorite games, to sorta RP (Roleplay) i guess lol. Way back before Roleplaying in video games was really considered "cool" lol God bless you, brotha!!

Frisco was the worst of the series. They turned Driver into a PG rated kids game and made Jericho a villain when he was originally a gangster. Any true Driver fan from way back in the day HATES San Francisco. And I asked Reflections the other day and they said "Thanks for your interest in Driver! As you can imagine, we're very proud of our heritage at Reflections and games such as Driver. While we currently have no plans to make another Driver game." It'll be my dream to see another MATURE Driver game, and A LOT of people are asking for another Driver game. Look on Facebook at their comments and all their posts say "Make another Driver". But I don't think they will.

In case for anyone who didn't know Watch_Dogs was originally meant to be the next Driver installment. How anyone could use the word "good" and "Driver San Fransisco" in the same sentence is beyond me. I hope you get help.

Parallel Lines was so damn good. The idea of having your main character go to prison and having an entire open world in 2 different eras was something I haven't seen before or since. Their problem was with the out of car controls/game play. I'm pretty sure the guy couldn't jump, among other things. Driver had better driving physics and crashes than grand theft auto, but they dropped the ball on the out of car stuff. That's really what killed them.

When i turned 6 years old i still played this beautiful game and i accidently restarted the game. I cried and begged to my brother to help me complete the era change because it was so cool to play in 2006. And the songs on the radio. Do we really have to talk about them, just perfect songs. I even used to sing them in my daycare. This game needs more attention.

I Remember being able to hit R1 and having a power boost, i use to just drift around the city for hours, never even bothered to beat the game, i was so drawn in by the driving physics. Then they made stuntman and also killed it. the fact you could get a monster truck, place cars and run over them kept me occupied for hours on end. Good fucking times.

Satisfying? It was excruciating. You couldn't really practice different sections and work it all out, you had to do it all at once and start over from the beginning if you made the slightest mistake. If you were a glutton for punishment, maybe it was fun for you, but there was no real payoff for pulling it off: it just dumped you into another excruciating scenario. It needed a concession or two to make it more worthwhile.

I'm a big fan of Driver, but I think it should be laid to rest. After the first three main releases, its identity was just totally lost and completely fractured - with far too many prequels, spin-offs, offshoots. It's a bit of a mess. If the studio had held their nerve and kept the formula behind Driver 2 going (with evolutionary improvements), it probably could have kept enough distance from GTA (another franchise I love). However, I'm still waiting for a current/next gen 70s-inspired cop chase game that interests me...

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but this is something people commonly get wrong. Criterion really had something going for NFS Most Wanted 2012 (Just look at some of the beta/very early gameplay.) EA then came and said that Criterion had to finish the game faster, which resulted in Criterion having to rush it and most likely need to copy Burnout physics/gameplay to satisfy EA's release date requirements. Criterion wanted to make their NFS games good, but EA rushed them and didn't allow them to do so. EA killed NFS, not Criterion.

I think you are incorrect: We see 'risky' games all the time now thanks to cheaper and more robust development tools. The 'risk' part is minimised due to the process being cheaper. The examples we see are very good looking and well controlling games in the indie genre. Also with digital distribution making things cheaper, we have even cheaper games to experiments with like the aforementioned Grow Home. Heck, some games release as free from the get go (which would be unheard of in past generations). This is the golden age of gaming and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. Nostalgia is is always inaccurate, so nostalgia be damned. :)

@@shmookins probably he should've said high profile games instead of games in general. He is partially right, most of the risks as you said are taken by indies with small budget games that if successful can get them mad bucks and kickstart their career but if not no big deal so long they can get some investment back. Even a hat in time, a game i really liked, is clearly done on a small budget and major game developers are very unlikely to try something new unless they are sure it can sell very well or are backed by even bigger companies like sony or nintendo that can take the hit in case of failure. Sure. Wouldn't you agree that it is a much better time to experiment with games now compared to the past? I mean, just the concept of episodic games was unthinkable in the past. I think the risks involved with experimenting and game making in general is less nowadays because of the many different ways to make and distribute games now. Online interactions and feedback alone is a huge influence. In addition, big budget risks are still alive. One of the reasons I like Ubisoft is they are biggest makers of AAA new IPs. Sony does as well, but no company comes close to the numbers Ubi puts out. From Blood and Bone to The Crew 2 to The Division to Wildlands to For Honor and many more. So we have experimentation with huge AAA budgets and countless more with indie. And some indie games out there look so good (tech-wise) that they would have had to be made with a relatively big budget and more manpower in the past. This is thanks to tech like UE4 and Unity being not way simpler to use now than in the past, but also to being free (which is absolutely crazy to think about). Compared to the past, we now have way more AAA titles (original and sequels), indie experimentation, many new delivery and business options from crowd funding to DLC to episodic content to free games, devs having instantaneous and direct connection with gamers via social media, real-time monitoring of stats from both the business side and how gamers play the game (thanks to online services) and so on. Just to show how good it is nowadays compared to the past, look how many dead IP's are getting a revival in the forms of re-releases, remakes and reimaginings. We got games that were long dead from 90's (Double Fine games) to cult classics like Crash and Spyro seeing huge returns. Some games change major features between a beta and final release just because of gamer feedback- which is only possible thanks to the internet. I mean, who ever thought e-sports would be a thing and streaming gameplay would be even a possibility? You could stream-play PS4 games on a phone...WTF?! The OP says: "No publisher/studio would make a game like this anymore because of the financial risk and competition", but I see 'games like this' all the time from AAA to indie on practically every platform imaginable. I think nostalgia is a cloudy memory. I've been a gamer since the MSX and there is no comparison how much better gaming is today in every single regard compared to the past- plus all the new innovations in gaming unimaginable in the past. What a time to be a gamer. :D

@@scottzummers2812 driving shouldn't be easy, it's so arcade-y and wrong when you know how a real car should behave. That's why I respect Mafia 1 and 2. GTA IV is an interesting case and vehicle handling in it was definitely more realistic than GTA 5.

Dimitar Stanev we talking about driving in video games tho. But IV driving was garbage. Driving in V is easy

I think if Driver 2 got a PC release it would have been better received, at least it would run better hopefully. All this reminds me of Urban Chaos, GTA 3 before GTA 3, and you were a cop....buggy as anything but they tried.

I'm pretty sure I remember playing Driver (either 1 or 2?) on PC, and it ran like butter, had much longer draw distance, and would even let you mod the cars to change model and stats in the config files. I had a blast messing around with it.

Seriously. I picked up a copy of Driver 2 a few years ago just to see how it would play and because I had fond memories of the original (on PC)... I runs like a turd covered in burnt hair. I knew it would look bad, but my god the framerate felt like 5fps half the time. Don't know how anyone played it.
