Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. With these three shows, AMC created a massive wave of success for themselves over a decade ago. But now, they seem to have flamed out a bit. Better Call Saul aside, their line up is mostly mediocre zombie product like Fear The Walking Dead. In this video, I go into what I think happened.

Actor Sam Witwer worked with Frank Darabont on “The Mist”. He tells a story about how Frank Darabont wanted to do an episode following a soldier as all hell breaks loose, a Blackhawk Down with zombies. That soldier would become the zombie Rick encounters in the tank. Instead, AMC cut the budget for “TWD”, and fired Frank Darabont before season 2. That says a lot about the leadership at AMC. To have no confidence in the vision of Frank Darabont, that’s just stupid in my opinion and is a signifier of what would come.

  • @gothbossbaby

This. I have always said this exact decision to part ways with Frank Darabont was a massive mistake. While I still really enjoy the show and still watch it today, the writing and atmosphere throughout Season 1 was unreal and an arc focused on the downfall of Atlanta wold have been a massive success. Sam Witwer is fantastic and every time I rewatch the tank scene in episode one I can't help but picture a flashback to how the tank zombie ended up there in the first place.

He mentioned he didn't like how Dale's death was handled in the show which can also be traced back to Darabont's firing since his actor Jeffrey DeMunn is pretty good friends with Darabont and I'm pretty sure has had a role just about everything he's done. Naturally keeping DeMunn around after the network publicly and unceremoniously fired his buddy would've been awkward. I still feel like Darabont's firing contributed to Andrea's crappy writing in season 3 because Laurie Holden was also a frequent collaborator with Darabont.

@@damonlongstreet8630 definitely isn't where the show died though that was definitely around the whisperers time. After season 8 the show just took a nose dive season 9 to 11 feel like a completely different show and that's not a good thing. And that's not even including the fact that you can't even care about the new characters they establish bc they'll just die a season later anyways for little to no reason or they'll pull another Henry and develop a character for a whole season before abruptly killing them off for shock value. That or the new characters just suck lol whether it's the actor, the writing or both so many new characters are just annoyances when the writers want them to be likable.

Sitting here thinking about it, nobody should support this network for what they did to Frank Darabont. The man is one of the most talented artists and storytellers working today. If studios won’t support real talent like this, and choose people like Kurtzman and Abrams instead, we’ll just have more brain dead stories. I can’t support that kind of thinking.

I was kind of surprised that this video omitted any mention of the absolutely ludicrous amount of advertisements we all have to suffer through whenever we try and watch one of their show on AMC's actual cable channel. *That's* what killed it for me. I think they have more frequent and longer ad breaks than any other channel I've ever seen, and when the option to stream shows with NO ads exists, I'm going that latter route every time. I'll happily wait an extra year for the newest episodes of Better Call Saul to reach Netflix, just to watch them as the creators intended, without idiotic ads punctuating their brilliant scripts and drama.

I'm currently watching Lodge 49 and this show is SO GOOD. It's sad I only ever heard of it after it was already cancelled.

Halt & Catch Fire is such a criminally underrated show. It’s up there with Breaking Bad as far as how connected i felt to the characters, they felt like my friends.

Ironic that a show about zombies died in its second season yet shambles on while infecting its network, slowly killing it. Guess that's what happens when you fire Frank Darabont and screw your talent.

Saying the walking dead died on its second season is not true, in terms of viewership it was still going strong up until at least season 7

I think the price cutting of season 2 of the walking dead really was the downfall of it. Nothing ever lived up to the quality of HBO or streaming services after they cut back on spending post Breaking Bad, and Mad Men. Even better call Saul feels cheaper in quality. All of that was cost cutting issues and it’s honestly what cost them many viewers in the long run.

I loved Rubicon and was fully on board with it. Easily one of the most disappointed cancelling's of a TV show for me. Also really liked Lodge 49 but that one met its maker too soon also :/

The reason most people got into TWD was mainly because of the unanticipated deaths. When they debuted Negan I remembered for *days* if not *MONTHS* people were asking who was going to die next. I got out even before then, but by then it felt like reality television.

I left as even in a TV world---nobody with an ascot, 50s biker jacket, and only a baseball bat will EVER be a leader or even survive a week in SHTF.
