Sauron never wanted to be a king, Galadriel forced him to be one. Sauron saved Galadriel from drowning, Galadriel left her troops frozen to death. Sauron showed his diplomacy, Galadriel showed her selfishness. Sauron admits his mistakes, Galadriel indirectly blames others of her mistakes. Sauron (a Maiar) gets wounded, Galadriel (an elf) remains unscatched even from a pyroclastic flow. Sauron remains so cool even when angry, Galadriel uncontrollably twitches her nose when angered. This is the only series that made me rooting for the villain to win.

@@frankjennings4489 I love the world of Lord of the Rings and this series portrays it really well. I know what you're on about. Take into account that Amazon couldn't purchase the rights to all the information from the Tolkien estate even though they spent a pile of money. So, if the writers included anything they were not supposed to then any law suit would easily cost them double. Ok, the writers of House of the Dragon did a much better job but they had Martin in their camp and that show is better. I don't know why the Harfoots are so unappreciated. They add a jolly and natural side to the story and they do discover the Meteor Man, who I believe to be Mithrandir. I heard the writers have all been sacked. Sounds like a Bezos thing to me but the viewing figures were lower than expected for the cost of production. We know Galadriel as a supreme Queen from Jackson's films, all six of them. It's surprising that his Lord of the Rings was done so well. So, I have watched the series twice now and have enjoyed each episode. There are definitely worse things about, past and present. Yeah, they built up a plot and kept us guessing about three men. Was Sauron Harbrand, was he Meteor Man or was he a dishevelled elf looking person building up an army of Orcs? Morgoth and Sauron had been defeated and cast away in the First Age and Sauron was trying to come back. The series isn't about the Elves, it isn't about the Dwarves, it isn't about Numenor, it isn't even about Sauron, it's about all of them, even the Harfoots. They're not going to get Rings of Power literal from the texts, they can't, but the first series was enjoyable. The vistas were great and the action was satisfyingly gruesome. Ok, Galadriel acted like a spoilt teenager a lot. Perhaps Nenya will mature her. Perhaps her heart was full of hurt and her oath to avenge her brother Finrod's death was driving her in this series. I felt that Harbrand was Sauron while they were both in Numenor. However, the men of Numenor were pretty hateful of elves by the time they arrived and only Elendil and the Queen Regent held the old ways. Sauron had obviously been to Numenor earlier to stir up the men against the elves and I heard talk of sailing west during the series. Perhaps the writers could not use the name Annatar in Numenor or Lindon. So they made up the name Halbrand. I have been a Lord of the Rings fan since I first read it in 1968. I enjoyed the unfinished animated version by Ralph Bakshi but Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings towers above anything before or since. He even took some scenes from the animated film and reproduced them in his own. I do like the Hobbit, I bet you don't. I do like The Rings of Power as the series allows us back in that wonderful world of Middle Earth. I'm with 'In Deep Geek' with this one.

The writers wanted so badly to make Galadriel into Eowyn and I completely baffled as to why except for the purposes of fanservice. They had the exact same story arc (a woman obsessed with fighting needs to learn to let go of her anger), very similar personalities, gave her chemistry with a long-lost king, and they even dressed her up like Eowyn while she was in Numenor. It wasn't subtle in the slightest and made it feel like the writers fundamentally misunderstood Galadriel's character. Even if you dismiss it as harmless fanservice, Galadriel would have been 5,000 years old at the minimum here. She is older than every other elf in the show and yet is portrayed like an obnoxious child. It is a massive disservice to her character in the lore and made it feel like they just wanted her to be a girl boss and didn't care about anything else.

  • @LokiTheAnsuz

    @LokiTheAnsuz

If that was their intention, they misunderstood Eowyn as well. She was decisively feminine and it was her femininity that made her arc so appealing and her courage so relevant... This show's Galadriel is just a manchild cosplaying as Galadriel...

It really shows how feminism was done well back then and nowadays it isn't about showing women growing and becoming strong, complex characters. Now it's just about showing how effortlessly great women are and how perfect they are without ever needing to grow or learn from their mistakes. Eowyn was, technically, a very simple character with a plot arc that is cliche nowadays, but it was handled well and still made her feel like a fleshed out woman who wasn't perfect. The female characters nowadays are often rude, unrealistically powerful (fighting men much bigger than them but without using techniques that help to counter their size differences), arrogant, and unlikeable. Eowyn is great to see because she isn't as strong as the others but is determined to help anyway. She doesn't beat the bad guy with strength because it would be silly for her to somehow overpower this giant guy with incredible strength and immortality. That's why her victory is so much more satisfying. We have seen her fail and persist and then she finally wins by teaming up with the other character similar to her that was also told to stay behind. Eowyn is a great character because she's a real, flawed person that both men and woman can relate to. (Her and Merry were different genders but had the same people holding them back, which I might add was because the people were trying to protect them, not because they were 'racist' or 'sexist'). Writers nowadays need to learn why Eowyn was so great. She wasn't 'sticking it to the man'. She was merely a woman trying to do what was right despite her weaknesses and drawbacks. She was trying to protect the men she loved, even if it might get her killed. This new Galadrial was just trying to make herself look good and doing whatever she wanted. She doesn't want to protect anyone or anything. (She might say she's fighting for good or the world but her actions say otherwise.) She's not relatable, for men or women like myself, and I don't really care if she succeeds. I rooted for Eowyn and Arwen. I don't root for most female characters nowadays in film.

Morfydd Clark's performance is so opposite of that of Miranda Otto I had not made that connection. Eowyn's desire to play her part in the battle is one of dedication to her people and her uncle, she tried to protect him when he was under the spell of Wormtongue and tries to protect him at the battlefield. Karendriel is just permanent PMS and Narcissism combined, she has nothing of dedication to others but only to her personal peeves. By copy pasting the showrunners neither understood Galadriel as they understood Eowyn. When Eowyn in book or movie had been anything alike Karendriel, the Nazgul-king would have crushed her like a bug.

The reason the show is how it is, is because they’re from JJ Abrams “Bad Reboot”. Season Mystery Box=Who is Sauron? Most of your questions to do with plotting comes down to this, they wanted their Sauron Mystery Box reveal to be midways through the finale, so everything else has to accommodate that. That’s why the forging of the rings were crammed into the last episode, because if they began sooner it would give away their Mystery Box Sauron reveal, so they couldn’t. Gandalf can’t speak until Sauron is revealed or else it will give away he’s a red herring. Etc. It’s a horrible way to write something, and this is the quality of story that you end up with.

  • @partyboi8773

The Mystery Box (two of them, no less) really is a sad core to build an entire story around. Can you imagine if a show like Breaking Bad had built an entire season around "Who is Heisenberg?" We knew who Heisenberg was; that wasn't the point. The point was watching his character development unfold and the plot unfold as a result of his actions and decisions, and their effects on the people around him. This could've been done with a strong portrayal of Sauron (=Annatar); even if viewers learned who he was early on, the important thing would be that the ELVES didn't know, and watching in increasing horror as they're deceived would be the perfect source of story tension, as Galadriel, the only one who mistrusts him, clashes with Celebrimbor, especially, who wants to learn the secrets he has to teach. The plot as laid out by Tolkien would've worked perfectly well, with competent writers.

I find it ironic that, despite all their self-congratulatory notions that they “transformed” Galadriel into a “strong” character, this couldn’t be further from the case: in the lore she is the wisest of the Elves in Middle-earth and here she is wrathful and impulsive. She also lets herself be deceived by Sauron while Tolkien in the lore explicitly stated that she was one of the Elves that Sauron couldn’t deceive. It seems that they think that having an armour and a sword is enough to make any ‘femenine’ character “strong” now.

I thought the hobbit movies were alright, though quite forgettable. I had the same low expectations for GOT season 8 as I did for ROP, and I moderately enjoyed S8 whereas I was disappointed and bored by ROP. GOT at its worst arguably had similarly bad writing as ROP (hard to tell since it benefited from having established characters and plot from earlier seasons), but it still looked much better, sounded much better, and the characters and the acting were much better. the writing is the only thing that sucked in late GOT, and it sucked terribly, but with ROP, almost everything sucks that hard. ROP fucked up the writing (both story and characters), the casting, the acting, about half of the set design and some of the CGI, many of the costumes, the music, the fight scenes, and the physics. I am highly confused how they spent all that money, given the use of exclusively no-name and almost entirely bad actors and writers. the only top notch professionals in the production of ROP were the horses. those are some good horses, they did a good job. First reason is that they don't need to. They can just blame any criticism on racism or sexism if ppl dont like it. Second reason is nepotism. Bad writers get hired due to nepotism and then they become the writers with the most on their resume, so they have writing credits and nepotism to help them get the jobs over anyone else.

It's funny to me how I went to see H.O.T.D completely sceptical thanks to the ending of G.O.T and with every single episode that went by I ended up loving it and expecting the following chapter. Well written characters, interesting world building, good usage of time skips all throughout. And a good introduction for powerful female characters. In contrast; I saw R.O.P excited from the get go, didn't see any behind the scenes footage, nor any news from it so I thought: "Okay, rings of power, so like the Silmarillion, possibly first age and second age in a show, that'll be good considering it's a series and not a movie". Oh boy... Disappointment after disappointment. Bad use of slow mo, the world building feels atrocious, every place looks pretty much the same, being in Numenor might as well be the same as being in Middle Earth. The elves look like normal people, they don't stand out. Am I the only one that thinks that putting prehistoric hobbits with a Scottish - Irish accent is kinda offensive? Like why? Idk... It's such a let down with every scene and dialogue.

It is the highest form of Hollywood arrogance to assume ANY 2 writers with no large credits to their names could write a masterpiece in 6 weeks on par with a legendary author who spent years crafting his novels. OF COURSE it felt like a fan fiction. The ONLY possible way this wouldn't have felt like a fan fiction is if they took a team of the best authorities on LoTR and gave them a year to hammer out a story, but Hollywood is in such a hurry to make a return on their investment that they are willing to put out shit to do it.

There were no signs of halbrand having any intention to get to Mordor and then to Eregion How is that mithril suddenly bestowes power instead of healing the elves? Why is Gil Galad suspicious? Wasn't it his plan initially? How is that this tiny bit of mithril is suddenly enough and it'll do? Why did they want so dwsperately to mine as much is possible? In the Jackson films, whenever the characters arrived at a location like Edoras and Minas Tirith, the movie would take a little time to introduce us to the place. The characters would ride their horses through the gates and along the streets, we'd see people and buildings passing by to give an impression of the environment, and characters would share a little expository dialogue about the location. It felt very real and lived-in. In Rings of Power, whenever we see a place like Numenor or Lindon, we just get a 5-second bird's-eye establishing shot that's 100% CGI and then immediately cut to an interior studio set where the characters just stand in one place and talk. It feels like Star Trek: TNG. That show always had establishing shots of a matte painting of a Klingon city or whatever whenever they went down to a planet, but I would expect more from RoP. Also, did anyone else notice that the city location in Numenor is never specifically named? It's all just "Numenor," no named cities like Armenolos from the lore. Isn't that strange?

The reason why Sauron convinces people so easily and overcomes every obstacle with ease is that cham is a primary skill of his. So I'm gonna start this comment off with saying I'm someone who hasn't read the books but loves the Peter Jackson lotr trilogy to bits, the hobbit trilogy less so but have watched many MANY Lore videos so I kinda have a ruff understanding of the lore, but I have mad respect for Tolkien being the grandfather of mordern fantasy, just so you all know where I'm coming from. now I'm going to outline every issue in general I had with the show from the starting point in pretending it has nothing to do with tolkien as it's full of issues from Top to bottom - a huge portion of the show nothing happens its incredibly boring and the pacing is awful - the dialogue is full of ridiculous Psudo intellectual crap that's trying so hard to sound smart but is just so dump and hardly a episode goes by without a line that is just head scratching and makes me laugh - the casting generally across the board is just bad with the exception of the 2 durins and adar, other then those I don't buy any of the actors playing the characters - the story is crammed full of ridiculous leeps and bounds in logic that just do not make any sense what so ever such as the South landers leaving the tower to fight in the village or everything to do with the damm sword key or everyome surviving mount doom, the list is to big to even approach in this comment but it's ridiculous - the show has absolutely no sense of time or how long it takes things to happen - the show can't decide how susceptible orcs are to sunlight and it changes depending on the whim of the writers - the fight choreography is honestly really bad and downright unbelievably stupid in a lot of cases - the bloody harfoots are downright horrible little psychopathic morons that add nothing to the story and I was honestly rooting for them all to die - the props and costume somehow managed to look both over produced and cheep at the same time such as the numenorean armor looking plastic being the worst offender here - the introduction is honestly really mid and pales in comparison to the Jacksons trilogy opening in establishing the world - and I hate to haft to make some political ish points but here we go, this show has a massive insufferable girl boss problem with many of its female characters just being to most annoying self absorbed people ever and this is especially bad with galadriel which is a problem as she is the closest thing to a main character, while almost all the male characters are either timid skinny teenage boys or stupid corrupt idiots it's acutaly kinda blatant - another horrible political point is some of the ridiculous Mordern allagory this show puts in such as the whole elves coming "to take ur jurbs" and we all know how much tolkien loved allagory which speak off - even without Tolkiens lore this show is just a horribly written dumpster fire but add in all the acutal ridiculous and stupid lore breaks and changes, this is Tolkiens world in name only it has nothing off him and its bad fanfiction at best, and I get that they only had the rights to the appendices or whatever but my answer to that would be either dont make the show or get the full acutal rights and tell the story properly, this middle ground stance doesn't work - and not to mention the way the marketing team handed things and the way they and the cast have been treating the fans and critics of this show its honestly just a little bit disgusting - while yes This show is visually beautiful with a ok sound track when watching this show to have any kind of enjoyment I actively need to make myself feel stupid cuz you need to forgive so much ridiculous stuff, probably why I always watched with with a couple beers to dump myself down, it really feels like this was made for super SUPER Casual viewers that just want to see pretty pictures and not use thier brain in any measure And that leaves me with my final point, idk how you build from this horrible dumpster fire of a first season, even if you completely change the writing team you've started out on such a bad foot I'm not sure if you can course correct here, you can't build a good house of a shakey foundation like this, I honestly hope they don't make a second season I just want them to cancel the second season and just scrap this and hopefully in the future someone else can do tolkiens work the same justice Peter Jackson trilogy did.

Comparing to to House of the Dragon, I think that is a “better” (or more well received) show is because the writers & producers clearly mapped out everything they wanted to do; start to finish BEFORE they began filming. Heck they’ve actually admitted to having it all laid out already inc season 2 & 3. Obviously, they’ll make changes, add or remove things but it’s clear where their goal is and how they get there. Rings of Power lacks this completely! Watching the first and last episodes you cannot see the connection between them whatsoever. Ep 1 of HotD makes it clear this series will end with a conflict over rulership of the realm. Can you tell what role Galadriel is gonna play, without prior knowledge of the lore? Nope. They clearly wanted to create the spectacle without substance which is a shame.

It's like RoP had an entire team of writers working on the show but they never communicated with each other and just slapped the scenes together. Then she says she will keep him alive until she's killed all the orcs... then two seconds later is trying to kill him until Halbrand stops her.

I've seen tolkien nerds say that there are canonically dark-skinned people in that world, like the easterlings that ally with sauron in LOTR. the show could have just included some of those, instead of adding black and brown people to every single community and species.

I think the main problem is a pure issue of greed affecting timing. With the original films, they had literal YEARS and no real pressure to perform well. Solely through Peter Jackson and Co's hard work and attention to detail---- all over the course of many years instead of mere months---- did we get the amazing films that so many of us know and love. And of course, the films created a much larger audience for Tolkien, and THAT is what truly increased the book's popularity. However, with something like The Hobbit or RoP, the studio execs knew that they could cash in on our noatalgia and the intertextuality of LotR. They thought we wouldnt notice plots holes, filler, deus ex machinas, etc. because we would be so dazzled by the 'Lord of the Ring-ness!!!!' of it all. It also doesnt help that Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh were all true Tolkien fans while making the original films, and that love certainly shone through. With this though, it just felt like a cash grab with some LotR refs thrown in for good measure. Im so sorry to say that all of this seems like such a common trait with a lot of films and big tv these days: studio goals seems to revolve around cashing in on the noteriety of the source material instead of actually investing both time and money into development and all around art form. It does however make me happy that audiences are waking up to this and are making their displeasure known..... hopefully, itt marks a return to ACTUAL cinematic art form!

@@BFNH459 We also have to remember that this is a prologue season. Story-lines that may have felt boring or useless, may bear fruit later on down the road. The main issue is, if we aren't given enough of a reason to care from the get go, like he mentioned in his video, the show will feel like a chore to get through. It's tough to judge the quality of the Dwarven storyline when it wasn't given a proper amount of time to flourish and actually tell its story, which is why I say it would be nice to see what that story-line would be like if given the proper time and space to develop. Elrond and Durin have the best chemistry in the show and I feel like there is enough there to really focus on that story and make it compelling.

@@BFNH459 Which again is why I just want to see what would happen if we had the story revolve around them and the forging of the rings. None of the other storylines/characters really interested me that much and just felt fairly generic, bland and heavily under developed. With the insane amount of money that Amazon has dumped into this show, you'd hope that not all of it went to the visuals and that a healthy amount was given to the actual story construction and writing.

I thought the writers only had access to the notes and not the actual source material in the books (Silmarillion etc) and this really really restricted them. So they had to make a bunch of crap up. Which isn't to say they couldn't have done a better job with the stuff they had to fill in but still. They were severely limited thanks to the Tolken Estate

It's really amazing. In a great series (Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, The Queen's Gambit, pre-Season 6 Game of Thrones, etc.), the more you watch and think about it, the better it becomes; new depths and connections become clear. With this series, the more you think about it, the dumber it becomes. As just one point out of dozens, Galadriel's sole motivation for, what, 1000 years and more has been to hunt Sauron and seek vengeance for her brother. It's her entire character, her only motivation. Then she discovers that Halbrand is Sauron (because for no reason whatsoever he just... tells her). So does she kill him on the spot? No. Does she, after he escapes, gather a force of the mightiest elves to pursue him? No. Does she pursue him herself, alone? No. Does she even *mention* it to anyone? No. The writers don't have even a rudimentary understanding of how to write characters and their motivations. It's bad enough that Galadriel isn't remotely consistent with Tolkien's Galadriel, but she's not even remotely consistent with HERSELF within the series!

7:24 The other thing that doesn't make sense is... where and when is this supposed to be? It's got to be either just before sunset, which would make sense geographically (they're heading east through the gap in the mountains where Minas Ithil will be later, so we can see the sun setting in the west), but doesn't make sense to be cutting from the village fight, which is in pitch darkness, which they then cut back to. It makes less sense than the Chewbacca defense.

Yup think this went over the main problems with the show quite well. Maybe something to add, or rather highlight, would the the fact that we have only the vaguest idea of what most of the characters’ motivations and allegiances are, particularly the Numenorians. What does Miriel want? Probably to save Numenor from destruction, but how do her actions in the show match that? First she hates the elves and tells Elendil to watch Galadriel, then she likes them and decides to even go herself to Middle Earth - why? To fight Sauron, who has never, as far as we know in the world of the show, been a threat to Numenor. The same is true of Elendil, his daughter, the son of Pharazon - even the better developed characters like Durin. It’s just a mess all around.

Very interesting analysis and greatly appreciate that you're making clear critical points about the writing failures, and not just falling into an angry rant. Aside from a lot of bad filler scenes with dull characters, these are the issues that bothered me most: 1. Galadriel is obnoxious and lacks empathy. A female character suffering toxic masculinity is no more appealing than a male character with the same traits. 2. Galadriel is also dense, which is strange for a semi-immortal elf who has lived centuries and is supposedly incredibly wise. When viewers are way, way ahead of the transcendent “Commander of the Northern Armies” in figuring out who Sauron is .... yikes! 3. Jumping off the ship in the middle of the ocean instead of entering Valinor might have worked if there was some foreshadowing that Galadriel made that crazy decision because she had fallen under a spell from Sauron. This would not need to reveal Halbrand as Sauron. The idea that she made that foolhardy decision on her own - at the last moment - in order to defend Middle Earth seems ludicrous. 4. Are we really supposed to believe that Sauron picking her up on a life raft is just a coincidence? If there was some indication in the story that Sauron arranged the encounter, it would make sense. Otherwise, it’s embarrassing and incompetent storytelling. But if Galadriel only makes her decision to jump into the ocean at the last moment, how would Sauron know how and where to scoop her up? And the Numenor ship picking them up by chance, yet again, makes it all even more absurd. 5. The Rube Goldberg volcano machine is not even plausible in a Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon. 6. No one considered that Halbrand might NOT be the true heir to the the Southlands before it was far too late? 6. Surviving a volcanic pyroclastic blast was epic and cartoonish. Yes, it’s fantasy but still needs verisimilitude to work as fiction. And Galadriel could have made more of an effort to assist survivors to establish her decency. Again, she seems to lack empathy in multiple scenes. 7. When Galadriel finally figures out Halbrand is Sauron … her failure to warn the other elves is more than a little mystifying. 🤔

I am glad to finally see some valid criticism instead of hate brigading like I feel other channels such as Nerdotic seem to do and just memeing it up. Being a big Tolkien fan I still enjoyed the show, that may be because I went in with very low expectations. I was like, I hope it is better than the percy jackson films and avatar the last airbender movie level. So that is why I think I still found it enjoyable enough but I think they can still turn it around and get better. I agree the main issues with it are the pacing and story telling for sure but they have good moments in there. Thank you for your breakdown and even though I think getting into this kind of analytical mindset we can get a bit nitpicky it is valid. One example is my wife and my family loved the Harfoots story and wanted more of it. Where I like you saw it as filler. So I guess it might depend on the person.

Tis season was so disappointing. I was really expecting 3 main storylines. I was so hoping for a political thriller on the side of Eregion with Sauron slowly worming his way into the smith halls and playing on Celebrimbor's thirst for achievement equal to what Feanor achieved. For Numenor, a storyline showing the evolution of their relationship with the elves and the valar, gratitude > indiference > resentment > lashing out > destruction. And to give more of an adventure feel beside the political storylines, the fight of influence in the south and the east between a rising sauron faction then empire and the freewilled who oppose him. Lots of room for original characters, Alatar and Pallando (which Tolkien in later notes said arrived in the second age to oppose the rise of Sauron), whole nations of arabic or african heritage. So much potential squandered for cheap mysteries and action without stakes.
