Jake Heaps just never had it. He had all the talent in the world but he didn't ever have the support of his team or even a connection with them. Sad. Amazing talent but he just couldn't get it done on the field.

the best part is, that Nelson used to go to Utah State but then transfered to BYU after his mission

When BYU played Utah in 2001 Gary Crowtons first year when Luke Staley got in with about a minute and 20 seconds left the game it was louder. I have had season tickets since 1993 and that game was the loudest i have ever heard the stadium. Check out the video i got so loud the camera started to shake. BYU vs. Utah 2001

It was Riley's best moment in his collegiate career. It shows, however, that even he needed two miracles to perform what BYU expects from its QBs.

I think Riley would and should have gone down in history as one of the legends at BYU. Maybe not up there at the pinnacle with McMahon, Young, and Detmer, but on par with Sark, Hall, and Beck. But there are two strikes against him, the whole Heaps-Nelson controversy, and the fact that he lost games because he wouldn't bench himself even though he was seriously hindered by injuries. That's the difference between him and the sainted Taysom Hill, who also should have been up there except for injuries.

Its funny how Jake Heaps got sidelined he had his helmet off. Once the team was scoring all of a sudden he had his helmet on.... No way you're not going back in.

Where is the 50-yards to Mckay Jacobsen miracle from the final possession of the USU game? Or the bounce-off-the-helmet to Marcus Matthews final touchdown a few minutes later?

Well BYU hasn't been slowing down at all, being one of the winningest programs over the past decade, with that looking to continue. (Seeing as we've only really lost to TCU, Utah and Florida St over the past few years. Well Utah St too, but still...) Utah St on the other hand has been improving. A lot too. With MWC action they'll only get better, so they could very well be a decent team over the next 10-15 years.

It was a miracle that some offense showed up. Heaps was not a good fit for the program - either that or he was put in way too soon. But that happens when you have a press conference announcing your commitment and are the top-ranked QB on the scout.com hype engine. Did BYU learn nothing from Ben Olson?

Riley Nelson was a good QB. His problem wasn't a lack of skills, but too much ego. He divided the locker room, and he wouldn't take himself out of games when he clearly was too injured to produce, which cost us several games that season.
