Nice! I had just enough theory to know the type of harmony in genius song are also common in western classical music. I have searched quite a bit and have yet to find someone who can the first four measures of the middle section. It's maddening! The bass goes up and the melody comes down and even though I sussed out the rest of the song that part is just too nutty for me!

I very much enjoyed that. Translating the piano inversions to guitar (and finger picking the correct chord tones) are critical to achieving a recognizable, interesting sound. Easier said than done. You have such a firm grasp of chord harmony. What is your musical background? Trained or self taught? I hope to one day have your ear sir.

Thank so much for all your comments, Tim! I studied jazz intensively and though I don't really play it anymore, the training doesn't go away.

Could I ask if you could tell me how exactly your fingering (haha, i know) is done on the Bbm7\5b? I am having some troubles figuring it out.

Sure - thumb on Bb, 6th fret of low E / 3rd finger on Ab, 6th fret of D string / 4th finger on Db, 6th fret of G string / 2nd finger on E, 5th fret of B string / 1st finger on Ab, 4th fret of high E

OMG perfect, thanks so much. This is a great tutorial btw, I've been wanting to learn this song for so long, and this is the only version that seems to be spot on, and also does not oversimplify the music. You're a hero man!

davidradler . There are different positions to play the chords. I'm sure you would agree. I like the way you play "God Only Knows" but to my ear, the F#minor should be strummed only once, followed by the F#minor7th, instead of twice. The same in the middle eight with B minor followed with B minor7th. . . .Kind Regards. John.
