Awesome video. Can you comment on the right gear to use in this situation?
@richdrewtherideseries
4 жыл бұрын
Hey there Bob! Glad you liked it. As far as gear choice goes, there are quite a few factors at play. To keep it simple, I'd say be in the gear that will allow you to apply as much torque as possible without spinning out. On the majority of what you saw in these videos I was in third or fourth (from the top) gear. You'd be shocked at how many obstacles you can just pedal up as long as you keep your weight centered over the bottom bracket and steadily apply power.

Thanks for the clear explanation! When you shift forward will it lift the rear wheel even if you're not clipped in?
@richdrewtherideseries
4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Not being clipped in makes it a bit more difficult, but the technique will still be the same. The shift forward will still unweight the rear of the bike and you can drag it up the obstacle. One a bigger obstacle, you'll need to focus a bit more on pushing through your palms and actually lifting a bit with your thumbs. It may sound a bit odd, but think about it next time you give it a try.
@gatoryak7332
4 жыл бұрын
Being clipped in allows you to lift the bike by pulling your legs up. With flats, you'll have to unweight while you push your legs aftward and your arms forward. Once you get that, it's more effective than pulling up with your legs.
@derekgdn4 жыл бұрын
Riding flat pedals. During the shift phase do I need to "drop my toes" and apply backward and downward pressure against the pedals to lift the rear wheel? All I know is to try to bash my way over relying on speed. Result otb in a few cases and chain ring bashing. Thank you. Also on a steep pitch if I don't bring my body to vertical (shift phase) the front wheel will start to lift up and I will stall or have to apply brakes and step off to the rear. My mind tricks me into thinking it's safest to stay glued to the saddle.
@jakedow46414 жыл бұрын
Really enjoying your videos. After watching this one, I don’t quite understand what you are doing to bring the rear wheel up. Is it mostly the weight shift? Are you applying pressure to the handlebars to help bring the rear wheel up?
@richdrewtherideseries
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jake! Glad you're enjoying the videos. You basically answered it: - Shifting your weight up AND forward will help bring that rear wheel up - Applying pressure on the bars or pulling with your thumbs will also add in some more momentum. Especially important when on a hardtail. I really like to find a small lift and work that shift into the Eddie the Eagle position. It's not always necessary, but it starts to drill in the movement and helps you realize how powerful those hips are!

Mike, I'm an experienced roadie but like you new to MTB. My new MTB friends ride in the Pisgah so I knew I needed to come up to speed quickly to be able to hang with them. I took a total of 10 hours of instruction at The Bike Farm in Brevard as part of my development plan. Their approach is to tailor the coaching to the individual skill and conditioning level, and objectives, of each student. The coaching gave me a huge boost in confidence and skills. So my advice is do both - get some good coaching and work on the basics.

Great video, would this work for 2’-3’ logs? I have never been able to get the hang of bunny hooping or manualing my 29” over large logs, but not sure if this technique would work with large logs as leaning forward when the front wheel drops seems like you would go over the bars.
@gatoryak7332
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works for large logs. It is more complex, though. A lift and a drop combined. You have to be actively moving your body and bike relative to each other on both sides of the obstacle. If you passively drop off the log, you will probably faceplant. Start practicing on smaller obstacles and work your way up.

Do you have to do the shift even quicker, or select a harder gear to avoid spin out, if the lift puts you on a steep incline followed by another lift? i se these on one of my local trails and never able to ride over the second lift at the steep incline.

Thank you!! Please more skills videos.
This was great... Thank you!! I’ve been struggling with an approx 18” lift up and over a log sitting on top of a drop (the 10” log is sitting at the edge of a little 8” drop.) I’ve sessioned it by approaching with my seat at a variety of heights and me standing, thinking this was the correct technique. It’s not working. I’m looking forward to trying this technique.
Thank you!!! Really helpful video!!!

I think it's VERY important to note that even though he's using clipless (clip-in) pedals, he's still using the TECHNIQUE to yeet himself up and onto the ramps.

VERY good point Adza! I think too many people rely on the clips to lift the bike up.

Awesome video. Can you comment on the right gear to use in this situation?
@richdrewtherideseries

I've actually learnt this technique, by riding up every curb I've come across!
Thanks 4d info I needed that
I so need to master the lift. I think that's my number one flaw.

Thanks for the clear explanation! When you shift forward will it lift the rear wheel even if you're not clipped in?
@richdrewtherideseries
4 жыл бұрын
@gatoryak7332

Being clipped in allows you to lift the bike by pulling your legs up. With flats, you'll have to unweight while you push your legs aftward and your arms forward. Once you get that, it's more effective than pulling up with your legs.
Really enjoying your videos. After watching this one, I don’t quite understand what you are doing to bring the rear wheel up. Is it mostly the weight shift? Are you applying pressure to the handlebars to help bring the rear wheel up?
@richdrewtherideseries
4 жыл бұрын
It's not always necessary, but it starts to drill in the movement and helps you realize how powerful those hips are!
hi Rich ! this how to series is amazing and really helpful. i've once subscribed another online mtb coaching series and he teaches this same technicque , but he starts standing and a 3/4 pedal punch. im curious why you prefer to start seated ? thank you

Rich thanks so much for doing this man! best tutorials style I've seen anywhere.. Can I get your opinion on something? I'm a total newbie, just got my first MTB about 6 mnths ago.. I'm thinking of getting some coaching and I'm wondering.. Is it super annoying/frustrating for a coach to deal with someone who is totally new? Maybe I'm better off learn some basics prior to seeking a coach? Anyway awesome information in this video I'm looking forward to learning more in the next one! Cheers! liked/subscribed/bell rang/shared..

Which MRP bash guard is that on the 429?
Thx... I tried it but having a hard time because im on flats. But slowly progressing.

Flats or clips, that doesn't matter it is about shifting the weight!
@gatoryak7332
4 жыл бұрын
Flats is a poor excuse. The technique is the same and is just as easy with flats.
Great video, would this work for 2’-3’ logs? I have never been able to get the hang of bunny hooping or manualing my 29” over large logs, but not sure if this technique would work with large logs as leaning forward when the front wheel drops seems like you would go over the bars.
@gatoryak7332
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works for large logs. It is more complex, though. A lift and a drop combined. You have to be actively moving your body and bike relative to each other on both sides of the obstacle. If you passively drop off the log, you will probably faceplant. Start practicing on smaller obstacles and work your way up.
Rise up!
3:15 to see what a "Technical Lift" is, then start the vid @ 0:00
Do you have to do the shift even quicker, or select a harder gear to avoid spin out, if the lift puts you on a steep incline followed by another lift? i se these on one of my local trails and never able to ride over the second lift at the steep incline.
@richdrewtherideseries

GREAT question! I'd say yes to both potentially. There's so much nuance with all of this. Trying different gears can be helpful for sure.
Takes commitment.
