The Rewatchables: ‘Casino Royale’ | Reinventing James Bond | The Ringer

Ойын-сауық

Do The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Sean Fennessey, and Amanda Dobbins look like they give a damn if their martini is shaken or stirred? Martin Campbell doesn't get the credit he deserves. Both GoldenEye and Casino Royale have my favourite style of action. Brutal punches, use of surrounding environment, snappy cuts, etc. I personally prefer it to the action in the Bourne series.

Bond and Vesper meeting on the train, dueling verbally. Bond trying and failing to save Vesper from the elevator before she drowns. Bond chasing Mollaka in the construction site. The coda. A shot rings out over Lake Como, kneecapping Mr. White, before Daniel Craig introduces himself as the last line of the film.

If some faceless corporation gets ahold of the IP then we’ll get another Disney Star Wars or MCU situation where they run it into the ground for short-term profit.

It might have some infurence from the Bourne franchise, but the movies that they directly take inspiration from within the Bond continuity is the Timothy Dalton ones. The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill were the pre-cursor to what Daniel Craig did. And its funny how these same American audience dismissed Dalton but now praise Craig for the same thing. Its almost like they could not make up their mind, realised their mistake, so they channeled their apologies to another actor rather than talking about the Dalton movies

I wasn't alive for Dalton, so I would argue that its essentially two different audiences that have made that opinion. The poker scenes are actually pretty silly, if you know anything about poker. They have so few big blinds and the last hand is just so crazy constructed. So many big hands and of course, bond has the nuts. Would be cooler if he uses the tell on lechiffre to call him down with just ace high or something and villain has a pure bluff. But well, for the majority of people, that would seem lame I guess. So the big hands it is.

As far as the next Bond in another 5 or 10 years, I really think an unknown/up & coming star type is the best bet. Something new & seemingly out of nowhere as far as the casting, style, tone etc. It's hard not to speculate or attempt to look into the future, but the best & most rewarding experiences are those which fill a hole we previously weren't even aware existed. I also cannot understand people's rejection of Spectre.

But Peter Sellers in the comic relief role stole the show from the serious urbane spy, David Niven, and it leaned into full comedy in teh Pink Panther sequels. The way our bodies are put together is something most people take for granted because we are all covered in a skin sheath. There was a bit of controversy however when it was learned that the cadavers used in some of the exhibits were former political prisoners who may or may not have been wrongly executed.

Interesting that they didn't note the part where Bond loses all MI6's money, says "Get the girl out," and is on his way to just gut Le Chiffre with a steak knife as a favorite scene. Also, Quantum is overdue for reconsideration. It's a character study and sort of like Bullitt in that way- he's saying he's doing one thing, actually doing another, and inside him there's turmoil. It's all Craig acting with his face. not what people want in a Bond movie, but that's not the movie's problem.

Eva green does the best acting in the whole franchise. Almost a Blanchett level of performance

Loved the discussion about CR, my favorite bond movie ever and one of my favorite action movies. However, if you are a true fan of film-making, please dont dismiss Across the Spiderverse out of hand without seeing it because it's an "ip" movie. It's easily one of if not the most beautiful animated movie ever made and is a true work of art that also tells a beautiful story. The prologue for the movie alone is worth the ticket, even if you hate spiderman and you hate superheroes. Its something special and different. Loved the podcast

I think the Brosnan films are underrated for what they are. They are meant to be just way watching action flicks, like Rambo etc. and they do that fantastically. Great actors and billionaire villains, amazing cars and gadgets, and I think Brosnan portrayed the most suave, cool-headed bond up until that point in the franchise. They are by no means perfect, but Goldeneye and Die Another Day are two of the ten best bond films of all time with goldeneye probably top 3 behind Casino Royale and Skyfall imo, plus it spawned one of the greatest movie licensed video games of all time with goldeneye on N64
