The Revivalists, "Fade Away" Live

The Revivalists, a 7-piece outfit from New Orleans, dropped by our offices in the midst of their tour to perform a short set. Those of us lucky enough to catch the performance were wowed by the band’s set, which was a romping march through the back streets of New Orleans.
The band, which formed in 2007, recently released its third full-length album, Men Amongst Mountains, that features such standout tracks as the triumphant “Keep Going,” the resilient “Fade Away” and the wistful “Wish I Knew You When You Were Young.”
“We’ve felt a little bit like an underdog,” singer David Shaw says. “The struggle of being in a band -- I mean, we killed four vans over six years. ‘Keep Going’ came out of a place of just knowing that this is what I want to do and this is who I am. What else am I going to do?,” he adds, laughing.
“Fade Away,” seems to follow the same sentimental trajectory. While the scars of a broken heart don’t mend easily, Shaw’s lets everyone know that while he may just be another skeleton in her closet, he’s not going to give up the good fight on finding new - and better - love.
While the band’s jubilant melodies belie the struggles they sing about, in the end, the music lets them come out on top. And the band shows they’ve got the juice to go more than a few rounds in the ring.
David Fricke described the band’s sound as a “Crescent City-rhythm spin on jam-band jubilee,” and the Revivalists do dabble in New Orlean’s best-known funky rhythms (there’s even a nod to hometown hero Dr. John on “Stand Up”).
But the Revivalists can honor idols like Dr. John, what with 7 accomplished players on everything from sax and trumpet to horns, organ, guitar and drums. While the band’s girth may be a financial stressor for an up-and-coming act, its advantage lies in its ability to create, recreate and then reformulate again a bevy of sounds that few trios or quartets can come close to emulating.
“The challenge is making sure everybody’s happy,” Shaw says. “One of the things that’s great about having a big band is you have a large arsenal to work with. Everything on the album you can hear live, but we don’t play it exactly how it sounds on the record. You can do the record justice - and more.”
In the Revivalists case, more is better - definitely better.

I realize the boldness of this statement and I’m comfortable saying it...these guys might be the best band ever. A few more songs like this and no question... they deserve to be in the discussion.

Your so right about that. I was a little disappointed to see there hasn’t been many comments lately when I posted my recently. Hopefully people are still discovering these guys. Truly great stuff.

These guys are like a "Southern rock, rhythm and bluegrass, New Orleans jazz sound. Totally Americana. I agree, they are soul rocking.

Saw them at The Stone Pony last night. Wow. They are in a class of their own. Amazing, amazing, amazing - ALL of them, especially David Shaw. They leave it ALL on the stage.

I’m a little annoyed with myself for even noticing, because there’s really nothing wrong about it... but how weird does it sound when a singer tells their audience “This is a song...” etc? I mean yeah- everyone there has puzzled that out already, songs are what they **showed up** for. No clarification needed.

I discovered The Revivalist at Jazz Fest. Dave and Zack were doing an interview I just happed to catch and fell in love immediately. I loved their music. I loved hearing how they met and struck up a friendship in the aftermath of Katrina. If not for one of the darkest times in our city this probably would have happened. My family lost everything in Katrina, but we had each other and now we have The Revivalist. The Revivalist are one of many BLESSINGS to come out of New Orleans inspire of this disaster. I’m old enough to be these guys Mom and I just love their music. They may not have all been born here in our beautiful city but we are so happy and proud they call our City home.
