The revival of Hebrew language

As Israel continues to celebrate 73 years of existence, it's important to highlight something that has a history deeply intertwined with the nation, and has evolved alongside it since the country's founding: modern Hebrew.

Fun fact- The university of Mumbai, India run by Indian Jews has been teaching Hebrew as a subject for more than a century now and decades before the language was revived.

Thanks for this little history of the Hebrew language! I have been studying with Ulpan-Or since 2010 . Their method is effective and fun for conversational, modern Hebrew, Highly recommend their face-to-face program and online programs.

10 on 10! English is not enough now! Languages do open culturo-commercial-artisanal-historical secrets doors of the countries that speak it! I am now back to Hebrew on top of knowning well English, American, le français, revising and goin' up in español mexicano y Español costarricense... I am hooked on Hebrew because I adore its letters but moreso, not only the opening doors for trades and education within Jewish diaspora communities in the world, coureagous stories thru some generations but its powerful vibrational balancing sounds for the mind like: I discovered it with Victoria Hanna! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZei2rSiYNbFdLA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHugy7F_drjRn7Q.html Plus, Hebrew is a revived language! kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKZ40Ninhb3dd7w.html 🙏 ✡️ Pascal

I felt uncomfortable with two things in this video. The first was referring to Hebrew as having died. It never did. It was always the language of Torah and liturgy. It was studied profoundly in the Middle Ages during which time pioneering work was done in the analysis of Hebrew grammar and syntax. I do not understand why the statement was made as though it were a statement of fact. It's not. Second: There was no reason for the woman being interviewed to correct herself from Israel to Palestine. This is Israel. This land was, is and always will be Israel, not Palestine. In all of the Semitic languages the root or p-l-sh means to invade or squat. It's very bizarre to me that people call themselves "Palestinians". The root exists in Arabic too. Who calls themselves a squatter and and invader and the land they live on a land of the invasion of squatters? Certainly Hebrew-speaking Jews who live in Israel should never make such a strange reference. I am not familiar with the addition of the letter tav as a suffix making a term into a chain. I presume this is some reference to sharsheret and shalshelet. But is this an accepted use of tav as an ot sofit in classical Hebrew or an invention of ben Yehudah? By all means answer in Hebrew if it's easier to explain this in Hebrew. My Husband is a Nakdan. when he gets up in the morning, I'll check the matter with him. But I'd still like to hear your opinion as well. We once stayed in a guest house in Yerushalayim. We were delighted, upon arriving, to realize that we were in Eliezer ben Yehudah's house. The guesthouse is called Beit ben Yehuda, but I didn't assume it was his actual home when I made the reservations. What a wonderful surprise that was!

The very definition of a dead language is a language that is not used in everyday speech and consequently not having native speakers, e.g. Latin. Latin IS still used in certain contexts, mainly liturgical, but it is a dead language, just like Hebrew was. The second point: She is talking about the time Eliezer migrated, decades before the state of Israel was founded. Palestine was the term used for the land, also among Jews. In this context, I would deem the use of Palestine more correct, since she is quoting Eliezer, which would make using terms he would have used the way to go.

Modern Hebrew pronunciation was closer to the spoken version always existing in Eretz Israel, and to Aramaic & Arabic. There was a rather big debate about Yiddish vs Hebrew (diaspora/oppressed language vs. native language) and about which pronunciation in the early years of the Yishuv (founding of pre-state institutions in late 19th-early 20th c.).
