Fun fact: in Nature wolves and raven are known to help each other. Raven show wolves big prey and the wolf open the ribcage and leave some meat for the raven. There are also several documented cases of lone wolf and raven forming long term bonds aka friendship

And in norse mythology allfather Odin leads the men in the battlefield accompannied with two wolves, Freki and Geri, and carrying two ravens, Hugin and Munin, on his shoulders. In the Ragnarok, the allfather will lead gods and men against chaos in the endtimes battle.

This is why I read the title and went "not really". Usually, when things in fiction are of 'totemic' in reference, they also will share a totems natural affinity for things. Another example, Hydra: regenerative, independently operating heads working towards the same goal. Each head is still self governed. Is it anywonder that then the alpha legion operates as a terrorist cell organization? Dragons value and appreciate finery. They are a volatile creature capable of extreme warmth and care or harbingers of woe. See salamanders; understand why the third company exists.

Lorgar was just having a normal day chilling with his Daemons when he noticed a group of ravens circling overhead, "When will he relent!?" he hissed. "They had no bff's relationship..?" When a brother shows enough respect that he is willing to drive what is left of his Legio into the teeth of a 4 legio besieging force. And your tattered battlebeaten legio is willing to follow you, once more into what could well be another Istvaan. Speaks volumes of the bond between the wolves and the ravens. Then that is more then respect. Its a brothers love. Blood for blood. Brother for brother.

It is such a good moment, when Corax decided to fight to live rather than die. He orders a retreat to the voidships under fire from the enemy, commenting something like; "We (the 19th legion) have had extensive experiences in last-seconds extractions." Nice understated dry humor.

Corax is just the best. Human personality, emotion, and a Primarch that almost everyone fears. I believe that Russ and Corax saw much in common with one another. In a way they both were used by the Emperor as executioners. Russ used against brothers, and Corax used against rebellious planets, individuals. Both had to do it in a very hands on personal method, and both reflected on their destruction in an emotional way. Can argue as well that Emps trusted no one more than Russ and Corax. They both may have felt some distinct connection there.

‘Is this channel secure? Can we be overheard?’ ‘Fully encrypted,’ replied Nasturi Ephrenia. ‘I am alone as you requested, my lord.’ ‘Call me Corax,’ he said. A promontory provided a convenient seat and he lowered himself onto it to gaze out over the bustle of activity below. ‘It’s been a long time since I used that name informally,’ said the controller. ‘What has been troubling you?’ ‘You were the first face I saw, Nasturi. Alone, confused, abandoned. Yours was the first face in that cold, hard place where I woke.’ She said nothing, understanding that it was not her place to speak. Not yet. ‘I have been thinking about that moment a lot. That instant where past and future became one. What would have happened if the guards had found me first?’ ‘I don’t understand, Corax.’ ‘Could I have become something else? What is rooted in me, and what was grown by the company I kept? What if I had been raised by oppressors, and not the oppressed?’ ‘That’s impossible to answer, Corax, and you know it.’ ‘So help me. Tell me something good I’ve done. Something objectively beneficial.’ ‘You saved my life,’ she said without hesitation. ‘That moment you are talking about? A second later, you killed the guard that had been my tormentor for as long as I could remember. You gave me his head as a gift. You never knew what that meant to me. I was so close to ending it. Even at that age, I was broken, without hope. I saw what they did to the others, what waited for me. Worse, if that guard had lived. I would have died soon enough, by his hand, or mine.’ ‘I... You never spoke of this before.’ ‘I didn’t have to. I saw you rip off the head of the man that had terrified and abused me since I was born, and then I knew that everything would be all right. I knew that we could fight back, that there was justice and it was clad in white skin and black hair.’ Corax suddenly remembered their meeting with such clarity that it hurt as much as the moment when it had happened, her pain writ so large on her infant features as the guard dragged her away by the hair. He had never seen it before in this way, but he could see it now - the absolute and personal terror she had felt in the grip of that man. And her laugh, a reaction of sheer relief and delight when the young primarch had torn off the guard’s head. His eyes searched the mustering army and settled upon Bjorn, who stood alone, watching the approaching enemy, the spear of Russ driven into the hard ground by his side. ‘We named you Corvus Corax for a reason,’ she told him. ‘The Saviour.’ ‘Thank you,’ he said, and cut the vox-link.

The asks Magnus to come peacefully and spare his son's. He offers to help. It's a great moment. Even after everything he and Magnus disagree about he still trys to being him in. It's only after that he does his duty and orders the slaughter as HORUS ordered. I think it's safe to say that Corax and Russ are pretty close as brothers can be, considering that the Wolf King once tried to placate a very pissed off Raven Lord when the Warmaster Horus ordered him on a suicidal mission to directly assault Gate 42 in stark contrast to his style of warfare. Both of their Legions are pretty close as well, as the Space Wolves knew of the Raven Guard's dark secret as told in the Saga of the Weregeld, as the tale was known only to the Sons of Russ.

Spoiler! The anthology where they reunite has one of the saddest and most grimdark parts in it and makes my eyes wet even thinking about it now. And I really hope Rho is talking about this scene at some point. The epilogue of Weregeld made me outright cry I have to admit. The promising and remarkable Navar Hef was one of the first corrupted Raptos and absolutely loyal to Corax, Emperor and mankind. The moment when Corax finally brought himself to go to the prison level to fulfill his promiseto cleanse the galaxy of all creatures of chaos, was truly heartbreaking. His tainted, but loyal son was waiting for him in the cell. You can clearly see the unconditional love and understanding in Navar Hef's eyes just before Corax puts him down with tears in his eyes, because he has to fullfil his oath. I post the dialogue under this for the ones who want to read it.

  • @PretenderCS

Found it on Reddit: The epilogue to Weregeld in the Corax Anthology: Corax paced slowly to the first cell door on the Red Level. He paused for a moment, repulsed and driven on in equal measure. It had to be done. Inside, he found a creature crouched in the corner, its skin white beneath clumps of thick black fur, its eyes round, ebon disks that stared at him without any obvious intellect. Even so, he could not ignore the similarities - the pale flesh, and the dark eyes. They had fought the war, and they had won. Now was the time to put right the assertion he had made to the sorcerer Nathrakin, on the forge world of Constanix II. 'I have made several oaths in my long life, but I have been careful to swear only those I could fulfil - except for one,' he told the beast. He crouched next to the pitiful thing and it shuffled closer, comforted by his presence, though the sight of it broke the primarch's heart. 'One I now think may be beyond me. I looked into the face of our enemy, into the heart of the force that had corrupted them. I knew that, even if we killed Horus, that power could not be eradicated completely. Chaos will return with ever greater strength if we allow it, if we give it the vessels it seeks and feed the ambitions that drive the weak to it's embrace.' Corax recognised the adoration and trust that radiated from the Deformed Raptor. He laid one massive hand upon the former legionary's head, and the fingers of the other curled around his throat. The creature's mouth worked a few times, and drool dribbled over Corax's hand and fell to the floor in thick gobbets. 'I remember everything, and I remember my exact words before I sent that fiend back into the warp-vortex that had birthed it ...' Tears stung the primarch's eyes. 'I ... I promised him that I would destroy every warp-spawned, Chaos-tainted creature in the galaxy before I die ...' The mewling, groaning thing that had been Navar Hef met his gaze. 'And I have always kept my promises, my son.'

Corax and Russ are both warriors to their core, even though having different preferred fighting strategies. However while one is more quiet and reserved, the other more loud and boisterous, they are both very similar in that they are blunt and forthright, they say exactly what they mean, and they both hold their honor in very high regard. When you look at the way that Corax and Russ are similar, it makes perfect sense that they share a good relationship with one another when the same cannot be said with some of their other brothers.

This makes me wish that maybe after Space Marine 2 we can have more amazing video games that may include the Primarchs as I would love to see them represented and respectively have their stories come to fold more. Imagine a heresy game where we can play as a Primarch or one of their sons fighting alongside them and seeing the same level of humanity on display like in the books. The Brother Primarchs hit me in the feels really well with their stories.

I can’t help but agree with the comments I’ve read - everything from how the raven and wolf will pair in nature to how the modes of warfare between the wolves and raven guard, while so different, meld so well. I also think that Corax is one of the few primarchs that Russ truly respects. To have his legion destroyed and all that went with it to still taking those who were left behind enemy lines taking the fight to chaos. Not the way Russ fights perhaps, but I think he sees the true warrior within Corax, the loyalty to their father. Roboute, the Lion, Manus - they were all loyal yes and fighters yes. But not quite the combination of absolutely loyalty that he and Corax were. One thing tho too that I haven’t seen spoken about. Corax was torn by his guilt for feeling he had failed their father and his sons. Russ also feels guilt that he doesn’t show much - as the emperors executioner - he has had to end the life or restrain so many of his kin. What happened with the 2nd and 11th. Russ seems to feel guilt and regret at what he was forced to do. Knowing what Corax carried in him, I suspect Russ knew that Corax would have to change - either become more the man that Russ had become himself in dealing with what had to be when it came his brothers he had to end- or Corax would fall to chaos or death. In the end Corax did become something of the Emperors executioner in his change and his pursuit of his fallen brothers. People often forget Russ’ mind and the foresight he himself had in being able to anticipate outcomes. Call me crazy but I think Russ may have seen that in his later found brother.

The Vikings held Ravens in VERY HIGH REGARD. From Huginn and Munnin, (Odins Ravens that gave him precognition and past sight, and a whole slew of other Godly Powers) and REGULAR Crows and Ravens were seen fl flying above battlefields and armies believed that they could tell which army was going to win so they were favored as birds of war and sacrifices were already made to them. The Morrigan was also the lady of ravens as was Freya and while the Morrigan was the warlike aspect Freya was a goddess who would also considered the queen of the Valkyries so Ravens played a huge part in that culture and as the space wolves are basically space Vikings, they seem to go hand-in-hand and I absolutely love my space Wolf brothers! And as for what wolf Lord rho just said, I think that would be one of the sickest stories ever is that Russ and daddy corax meet up in the eye Terror and just start kicking her ass I mean he's already beaten lower Gars ass twice and now it says waiting for him to come out so he can beat the brakes off of them and I would love absolutely love to see the other demon primarch just get their asses utterly handed to them! Also I would love to see korax explain to rust how to channel his inner empirical demon cuz could you imagine a big demon raven and a big demon werewolf just tearing ass through chaos? It makes me giddy just to think about! LOL thank you RHO, for another good video as always appreciated my brother.

I'm sure someone else probably has made a similar comment at some point, but seeing as how so much of the sons of Fenris' lore is so taken from Nordic mythology is makes sense that the Raven would be drawn to the Wolf. Both were known companions and servants to the All-father. I'm sure there is much more to take into account in regards to the actual 30k lore, but I just find the connection between the pair of them to be a semblance of those mythological relationships. Corax learning to speak his brother's first language just taking it a step further impov.

In the real world, wolves and ravens in recent years have learned to become allied with each other.. The ravens help the wolves find food or prey and the wolves in turn protect the ravens.. This mutualistic arrangement has become close enough that ravens will even play with the pups of their host wolf pack and raven families with be "loyal" to one wolf pack throughout their bloodline..

So glad to hear the pup is doing better. I don't know why Corax seemed so conciliatory towards Russ, however, I do believe that his humility rather than seemingly arrogance of some of the other Primarchs lent heavily to Russ giving Corax much more respect. Sure, Corax ISa Primarch, but he didn't carry himself like the other Russ had encountered. I think a reunion between these two would fare very well for both and I would love for it to happen one day....sooner rather than later

So, here is my speculation as to why their relationship was among the better ones. a. - this might be a bit counterintuitive, some might even call me heretic for saying it, but I wouldn't call Russ a warrior. I think he is a hunter instead. He is after prey his father marked for him, or after the prey he sees as worthy or in need of taking down, and that is it, he does not concern himself with things warriors do, and he is angry when someone steals "his" kill/prey. We also see this in 6th legion organization and behavior - they are basically packs of apex predators strolling through their hunting grounds, not a cohort of soldiers. Similarly, Corax too is more hunter then warrior. I hope this does not need any explanation :) So that is one common point - while different in approach, they share the hunter mentality. b. - They are both aware of their roles in the grand scheme of things, and they both accept it, because they share the same goal - uplifting humanity in accordance with Emperors plan. Knowing your goals align with someone elses goals is a plus, as far as relationships go. c. - They both see mortal humans as the core of humanity, someone they are duty bound to protect, and not just annoying weaklings - unlike number of other primarchs. That again, puts them into natural alignment, while showing they both have compassionate sides to them, which in itself helps in building friendship. d. - Now interesting thing is, I do not see any pronounced rivalry between them. And their differences would be one of the reasons for that. Russ do not see Corax as someone to compete with, simply because they are in different businesses I would say. Russ is a blunt force, weapon of mass destruction, so his rivalries are with others serving similar purpose. Lion being of course the prime example. Corax on the other hand, is a scalpel, precise tool for eliminating targets while the building needs to be left standing, so to speak. It also helps that Corax is not big on boasting and do not have a need to be the loudest one in the room. e. - I would say not being in direct competion also allows them to openly discuss their skills and problems without one of them hiding something in order to not give the other an advantage. This also ties to ability to freely express recognition of brothers skill. Both those things are parts of good relationship. f. - Also neither of them ever tried to force his views and doctrines on the other, which surely helps. Horus tried that (leading to massive bodycount for Raven Guard) and Corax hated him ever since. Overall, they share a number of traits, and sides of them that are different are complementary to each other, instead of being in direct opposition like in Russ vs Magnus case. So, yes it seems plausible to me, that they would be relatively close.

@@sajadhoxhaj6603 They were formidable in combat, Corax had every intention to find a cure for them. But as the campaign progressed so did the degradation of their minds, and Corax perception of them - Initially they were locked away. But for the most prominent Raptor, this was his faith: Corax paced slowly to the first cell door on the Red Level. He paused for a moment, repulsed and driven on in equal measure. It had to be done. Inside, he found a creature crouched in the corner, its skin white beneath clumps of thick black fur, its eyes round, ebon discs that stared at him without any obvious intellect. Even so, he could not ignore the similarities - the pale flesh, and the dark eyes. They had fought the war, and they had won. Now was the time to put right the assertion he had made to the sorcerer Nathrakin, on the forge world of Constanix II. ‘I have made several oaths in my long life, but I have been careful to swear only those I could fulfil - except for one,’ he told the beast. He crouched next to the pitiful thing and it shuffled closer, comforted by his presence, though the sight of it broke the primarch’s heart. ‘One I now think may be beyond me. I looked into the face of our enemy, into the heart of the force that had corrupted them. I knew that, even if we killed Horus, that power could not be eradicated completely. Chaos will return with ever greater strength if we allow it, if we give it the vessels it seeks and feed the ambitions that drive the weak to its embrace.’ Corax recognised the adoration and trust that radiated from the deformed Raptor. He laid one massive hand upon the former legionary’s head, and the fingers of the other curled around his throat. The creature’s mouth worked a few times, and drool dribbled over Corax’s hand and fell to the floor in thick gobbets. ‘I remember everything, and I remember my exact words before I sent that fiend back into the warp-vortex that had birthed it...’ Tears stung the primarch’s eyes. ‘I... I promised him that I would destroy every warp-spawned, Chaos-tainted creature in the galaxy before I die...’ The mewling, groaning thing that had been Navar Hef met his gaze. ‘And I have always kept my promises, my son.’

  • @radupitica

    @radupitica

    2 жыл бұрын

It's actually not at all an easy question because there's little linearity between 40k novels. If you want to start the Horus Heresy series, it's a good background for the 40k world but be aware that it's a LONG series - 58 books long plus the siege of terra series which is 8 books and is the conclusion of the Horus heresy. If you want to dive into 40k directly, many recommend the Eisenhorn series starting with Xenos. But I actually dove right into a standalone book as I had a decent amount of general world understanding, The Blood of Baal. So really the key message is that there is no order. They're all standalone books and series. If you want the prequel/background, go Horus Heresy. If you want an intro into the world of 40k including humans, inquisitors, etc, go Eisenhorn series. Otherwise choose a faction or topic and just dive right in.

It makes sense that Russ and Corax would be friends if you stop to think about it, you have to remember that they do have similar values, even though they had very different upbringings. Corax was raised by slaves and led the revolt that freed them, Russ was raised as essentially a Viking. These are very different backgrounds but, both would likely instill an appreciation of the value of liberty. Corax was a liberator, and Russ lived a life of true liberty, they would both understand and value freedom and self determination above all other things, one because he knew what it was to live without it, and the other because he could conceive of no other way to live. Different paths to the same conclusion, but the same conclusion nonetheless, and those who share values make quick comrades.

Maybe Russ felt the connection between him and Corax because they might share one special purpose the others don´t really have to this extend . Russ is the Emperors executioner, Corax does kind of the same in the shadows. His Primarch book depicted him as this avenging force if I remember correctly. At the end of the book (spoilers) he goes after the main villain of the story, even when he was scalded by most in the Imperium because of tactical reasons. It was hinted that the Emperor still approved Corax´ behaviour to go for the kill, because this guy had to be punished and his execution was also a message to other rebelling elements I guess.
