The Restoration of Bob Dylan Concert Footage [Martin Scorsese Interview - Rolling Thunder Revue]

This is a short excerpt taken from the extras on the new Criterion release of the Rolling Thunder Revue documentary. There's some great stuff on this release so I highly recommend investing in your own copy: www.criterion.com/films/31036.... It has some incredible exclusive footage, including performances of "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You", "Romance In Durango", and "Tangled Up In Blue". There are also some fascinating interviews of the editor of the film as Scorsese himself. In this short clip, he talks about the extensive restoration process the footage had to go through. I had no idea that the original negatives of this tour had been lost; this was sad to hear, but we're fortunate to live in an era that has technology able to breathe new life into these dying prints.
Peace & Love,
~SP

As has been pointed out, the audio changes drastically at 1:33. I apologize for this; I couldn't get past the copyright on the audio without overdubbing the footage with a bootleg tape of another performance, so it won't be perfectly in synch and there are some issues.

As someone who passionately loves filmmaking and Bob Dylan, this is astounding. No wonder this movie was put into the Criterion Collection, it is not only a brilliant way to tell a story through a documentary (even if some of the stories weren't true), but the restoration alone must've taken years.

Back in the early 80's I was dining in a restaurant in Venice CA and when I went to use the men's room Bob Dylan was wanting to enter at the same time -- he had a similar hat and vest on like in the Rolling Thunder Revue. I told him he could go first since he was Bob Dylan -- he actually thought that was funny and started laughing.

Anyone who says that Bob Dylan can't sing, I would recommend they buy his Desire album and listen to One more cup of coffee, his singing is out of this world, the way his voice slithers it's way around the Gypsy like tune. Not many people could sing that song the way Bob does. He's a great vocalist.👍

AGREED. It's so sad that they haven't released the '66 footage yet. Unlike Rolling Thunder, the Dylan archives in Tulsa DO have the negatives from '65 and '66, transferred them in 4k definition, and now have hundreds of hours (yes, hundreds). But they have not made any plans to release them. Doesn't make sense on many levels. They would make a fortune. And no one knows what happened to the negatives of RTR. The producers apparently spent years searching for them but they were never found.

@@Rilez616 Yeah, sort of. Copies are technically “reels of film” too though. I’m not an expert either, but from what I understand, when the film is shot, the reel is then taken from the camera and developed in a darkroom using chemicals into a viewable image of what is called the negative. even after the restoration the footage looks a bit washed-out compared to the TV(!) print of Renaldo and Clara. I wonder if it really faded that much or if it was a stylistic choice to give it a bit of a "western" choice.

@@DCRizzi Of course he'd say that! It's tricky really, its an interesting song in that (as with much of Desire and Love & Theft) it gives an insight into Dylan through the kinds of people and lives he romanticises but unfortunately Gallo just doesn't work as a figure to hang that romance on (unlike Ruben Carter, for an easy example). If 'to live outside the law you must be honest' Joey Gallo absolutely sealed his own fate. Plus that chorus is just so bloody dreary. Don't want to sound too negative though so I'd like to say I've watched The Rolling Thunder Revue about twenty times since it came out and it still feels like a straight-up miracle.

@@dullarddom Unfortunately, I haven't been able to to see the movie yet. Luckily, I got to follow the first leg of the tour around new england. The highpoint was the show in Harvard Square Theater (cap. 1800 people) where 4 front row center tickets fell into my hands. Cameras were banned from these shows but I happened to have my minox spy camera (size of a bic cig. lighter), and took a whole role of color shots using my bent knee as a tripod. It was pure magic and still stands out as the high point of the hundreds of bands/shows I saw in the 1960's - 70's. I even saw some people crying from hapiness when it was over! I could go on and on, but I'm just glad to see that Scorcese brought it back for the world to see.

@@dullarddom I was born and raised in NYC and at an early age I pursued the wealth of cultural events such as authors' readings, artists' showings, political demonstrations, etc. and of course, music. Over the years I met many famous musicians, writers, actors, artists, film makers et al. Many friends were in music promotion and eventually I could walk into any venue backstage without even a pass. I was also known as a reliable 'doctor' so people were usually quite happy to see me. On one occasion I was packing to move to another place and I put all my most personally valuable photos, letters, documents and gifts from bands and lady friends into a small attache case to keep near me. I left the apt. to get a bite to eat, and when I returned the apt. had been ripped off including the case. The lowlife who did it must have opened it and seen a few pieces of jewelry so he took the whole case. At that time, not very much in cash value, but today, to me the loss was priceless. The photos were probably tossed in the garbage. Very painfull, but a buddhist lesson in the nature of Shunyata none the less.

I think his trilogy of the seventies, Planet Waves, Blood on the tracks and Desire is second only to his classic '60s trilogy, Bringing it all back home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, and the infamous '66 world tour with the Hawks, when he was heckled "Judas", which made him play even harder and better.
