    How exciting! Replicas of classic computer keyboards are in production, like the ones for very old Macintosh computers in this case. Way to go, Vortex! I particularly would love to see replicas of HP computer peripherals of the early 2000s, such as keyboards and mice.

    @@superpacman256 Very true, although I have not tried that at all particularly due to functionality concerns. To find confidence that carrying on collecting functional HP peripherals from the good old days is possible, eBay can be the solution (depending on how they're priced).

    I'm a massive fan of HHKB layout keyboards. Usually, people see the moved backspace and no arrow keys and lose their minds, but the relocation of the backspace is ideal when typing; much easier to reach while touch typing and control on caps is so much more useful, especially for anyone who spends a lot of time in emacs. Also the shortened right shift to allow a function key is awesome, allows for a lot of quick easy access to print screen, etc. without ever needing to look down at your keyboard. Once you go move to an HHKB layout you’ll never want to go back!

    I've been using a HHKB (Pro 2) since 2013 and I've never used any other layout since then. I honestly cannot think of any keys that I'm missing out with the HHKB layout - and I do quite a bit of coding everyday - and I write lectures on a weekly basis... But given the lack of HHKB layout boards - I think this criterium has saved me quite a bit of money on impulsive keyboard purchases over the years...

    Just a BTW... Vortex has two variants of the triple mode keyboard -- one with a 7u spacebar, and one with a 6.25u spacebar and two control keys. From your teardown, it may work to just insert switches in the hotswap sockets, and they might work,

  • @mr6291

    @mr6291

    Yup you can change the switches on the fly, no need to unplug it or change modes or anything. Highly recommend some mods as well depending on user preference. I removed all the silicone (pcb and lower case insert), added some PE switch pads and rubber o-rings inside the case where the top and bottom case connect. All of these improve sound volume and resonance in a good way, make the side profile look similar to the original reference board and actually allow the gaskets to help isolate the plate from the case. Long pole or clicky switches also take it to another level.

  • @kbhasi

    (2:16) I think it's because QMK only supports wired USB connections, so they presumably offer a separate triple mode variant using a different controller chip for those who want wireless functionality or don't want to use QMK.

    I fell out of the (modern) keyboard world a while back, had no idea there was one of these in mass production. Absolutely lovely looking thing. My biggest qualm would be the backspace...I'd gladly trade the Delete key away to have the backspace in a more normal spot, and a 1.5u \ key under it. Looks absolutely killer paired with the SE. Classic Macs never looked right with ADB keyboards imo

    I think there got something messed up… my „windows on Mac/mac keyboard on windows“ experience was that the „windows“ button on Mac Lay-outs is the „clover“ button, aka. the „command“ button. Also the „Mac symbol“ on the „code key“ would be on the alt key on a real Mac keyboard. If I’m wrong, educate me and give me resources to look it up pls ;)

    That's more to allow swapping between OS's and having an expected layout. I believe this keyboard, rather then committing to one layout or the other, automatically switches based on the computer it's using, or at least, is marked with the matching symbols. The Windows/Command keys are functionally the same, and often called the Super key. The issue is that the layouts are different depending on the keyboard. The right hand side of a standard PC keyboard is Control/Super/Alt, and on an Apple keyboard its Control/Alt/Super. This is an issue when you mix and match keyboards with different OS's, and it can go against the users muscle memory. For example, on Mac OS, to refresh the page I would use Command+R, whereas using an Apple keyboard on Windows that same physical movement would be Windows+R and launch Run. It's likely that most users wont do this, but to spare any confusion, I believe they made it so it would be standard to the operating system, rather then the user having to figure out what the standard mapping is.
