The Holy Grail of Boxed Windows Software...

Ғылым және технология

Thanks to Erikmon, Matt, Logan and Free Geek Twin Cities for sending this stuff my way!
Today I'm unboxing a few packages that arrived at the studio over the past few months. And one of them contains what I consider to be the holy grail of boxed Windows software!

If I recall correctly, Windows 1.0 was only available for the DEC Rainbow 100. The first IBM PC version was 1.01. Regardless, very neat to see such an early copy of Windows complete in the box.

My very first digital camera and webcam is the same as the one at 3:50. I remember making my very first video call ever with that thing (through Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger). And I remember that camera losing whatever is on its memory when the batteries are removed, and it can store up to 99 photos. Back then, I didn't have a laptop, so I had to make sure the battery lasts until I get home.

It's nice and really special that people sent that stuff into you but, Windows 1.01, or 1.03 boxed? That is freaking cool to find. Very rare to see. I've seen one on the past and someone was asking good money for it. Today, most I have with Windows 1.03 is a VM with it, just to play with time to time. I do think out of the reto OS, Windows 95/98 get the most use as there was plenty of cool games.....

It's actually version 1.03 as the diskettes show. This seems to be the most common retail version. Mine came with some extra printer driver diskettes for some reason and I still have the perspex box that some of Microsoft's software came in. The next version 1.04 came in a box with completely redesigned artwork. That one seems less common for some reason and I'd love a copy myself. The donor is super generous as that is several $00s worth of software.

I still have so much old stuff but already tossed a bunch, unfortunately one was even an OG WebTV, we got a lot of focus from vendors since we were the corporate location.

Oh you really should do a video on Xenix, it's funny to think about how MS used to have the most popular UNIX on the market, I'm sure the two main reasons for ending support were 1) licensing costs to AT&T and 2) the popularity of MS-DOS w/ Windows Another video idea (or part of Xenix video) might be about Mariner (MS Linux) and/or SONiC (MS and Community supported MS Linux).

I wish I could post pictures in the comments, but I just had a look at my boxed copy of Windows and it's a 1.0! It also has an 'International Version' sticker on it. I also have a copy of Microsoft Multiplan 2.0 and two copies of Microsoft Word 2.0. They all have the slip covers (is that considered 'boxed'?) and one of my copies of Word has all of its documentation still sealed.

I won one of those digital cameras for Cub Scout popcorn sales as a kid. It never worked, made the “usb failed” sound when plugged into our then Windows XP computer. Even with the help of support we couldn’t get it to work. They sent a new one as a replacement, and it did the exact same thing: didn’t work, usb failed sound in XP. To this day it is the only USB device that has made the failed to connect sound.

The earliest version of Windows I used was 1.02TC which came with a Tulip PC (Dutch brand) at school. The PC only had 2 floppy drivers so to get it to work I setup a RAM disk and copied one floppy to it. It didn't have a mouse so I learned to use the keyboard shortcuts (still prefer to use Alt-F4 to this day) and I got to show it to my classmates by the teacher! That was back in... 1988 or 89 I guess? Obviously it didn't come on that nice box, the floppies sat in transparent sleeves in the ring bound computer manual.

3:57 i still have one of those sitting around. It was our first digital camera way back in 2000-2003. It was incredibly shitty, it outright refused to take a picture if it deemed that it would be a bit underexposed, it was bottom of the barrel web cam quality, but it made me a decent amount of money on online auction/classifieds sites, because back in those days advertisements with actual pictures included were very rare, and i was one of the first to sell stuff with a picture. Ours was branded Aiptek Pen Cam and not totally cheap, but 99 guilders or euro (idk anymore if we bought it before or after the introduction of the euro) was *the* cheapest digital camera out there at the time.

12:55 I'm...I'm shocked. And I want those *_BADLY!!_* Those kinds of electronic doujinshi magazines are not only super hard to come by, they are often completely lost media because back then (in 2003 when that was seemingly published), the internet was still not widely used, so physical distribution was still best. Hot damn, not even gonna lie, those right there stole the entire video. Granted, that boxed Windows 1.01 is definitely something to salivate over (as I love getting my hands on old media as well), but being able to see a digital doujin magazine distributed via cd-rom like that just truly warms my heart because it's so true to the spirit of doujinshi. Like, seriously, if you have no real use for it in your collection, I'd be *_MORE_* than willing to help take that off your hands. Rare doujin magazines are real time capsules of the current otaku trends of the time, and as someone who got deep into the culture late in life (back in the mid 2000s), getting your hands on such fine specimens of otaku history preservation truly brings a tear to my eye. You're one lucky guy. I salute you! o7 edit: And after digging a little, that cover of Chick 12 looks to be the cover of Mio Odagi's Magical Mates #4, which sent me on the right path to starting to collect some of her stuff. Again, you sir are a legend. :bless:
