The Relic: Defending Tom Sizemore's Monster Movie

Фильм және анимация

In the latest episode of The Black Sheep, we take a look at the underlooked 90s monster movie, The Relic. Set inside Chicago's Field Museum, a hybrid creature hunts its staff and patrons, while a gruff detective, played by Tom Sizemore, and a snappy biologist, played by Penelope Miller, try and save the day. Directed by Peter Hyams, who did the fantastic JCVD films Time Cop and Sudden Death, The Relic is a tense, action-packed monster movie that didn't drum up much support during its initial release in 1997. We believe it deserves a second look and has one of Stan Winston's greatest creations. Take the journey with us and see why!
THE BLACK SHEEP is an ongoing video series giving the horror underdog a fair shot i.e. putting the spotlight on films that the masses loathed but that we on AITH esteemed on varied levels. And sometimes we do the opposite - rip a beloved film a new one!

"The Relic" was a GREAT movie!! My ONLY complaint with it, is that it's SO damn dark! You have to struggle to see ANYTHING in a LOT of the shots in this movie. If they had lightened it up some, so you could actually SEE what's going on in it, I would think it was pretty much close to perfection! GREAT review btw!!👍👍

The film's constant usage of shadows and lighting with its cinematography really helps keep the viewer on edge, even after we see the monster in full view during the SWAT sequence. You know a monster movie is doing something right when its monster can still scare you even after you've seen the creature in the light.

That film is one of my favorites that I finally saw at the age of 17 on TV, it's not perfect but a dang good watch. Knowing that you've been posting more here I decided to subscribe so I won't miss your next Black Sheep video, stay awesome and stay safe my man. 🙂 Oh btw The Relic deserves love as well, it's freaking creepy and awesome!

Seeing Djimon Hounsou in that trailer snippet reminds me that I saw him as an extra in 1992's "Unlawful Entry"! He was a criminal in a police station; sitting on a bench, right next to Kurt Russell. He didn't say a thing, but he did laugh when Russell demanded a phone call. 8 years later he would co-star with Russell Crowe in "Gladiator". An actor's career can definitely be unpredictable in the very beginning!

I've never forgotten about this movie. Its not the greatest of all time, but its pretty damn good. I think I was 9 or 10 when this came out on video and begged my mom to rent it. Now I think I watch it once a year to everyother year if possible. I read the book twice (once on ship deployment and another on tour in Afghanistan). And recently listened to the audible audio book. Still good. Book is very "Crichton novel Jurassic Park" and much more brutal than the movie.

This movie got me into the whole series of Pendergast by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I can see why Agent Pendergast was not in the movie as he really is not much of an influence in this and the direct sequel but he is missed. The Pendergast books are based on science but it does not get in the way of the story.

The Relic was a great flick a bit dark, the camera work I mean but that gave it it's charm and added suspence. And the book is just as damn good completely different but good. What's curious is the fact around thus era there are a lot of underated or unknown horror flicks that were great. Look at Wish Master for example. Speaking of The great Stan Winston you should do a video on a The Vindicator 1986 aka ( Frankenstien 88 ) with FX's done by Stan Winston it predates Robocop but essentially a Robocopish horror sci to flick cheesy but fun.

I hated it with all my heart. I went to the cinema after reading the book that was fantastic and I felt insulted. The protagonist of the book is removed for the movie, making it almost nonsensical. Also the book was more like a thriller, you did not discover who was the monster until the end and the monster was not that giant thing but an human with some enhanced abilities that was turning more and more monstruous as the story progressed.

If you’re watching “The Relic” for the gore, yeah, you’ll get your dose and the effects largely hold up. If you had hoped for a story that could compliment or reflect the fantastic novel on which it’s based, you’ll be out of luck. The monster design is completely wrong and makes no sense as for how it moves around undetected for so long. A single viewing burned itself into my brain as one timeless example of lazy screen writing. This tops my list of “bad movies in need of a remake”.
