The Relationship Between Commerce and Crime | Off the Clock Economist Explores

Professor Daniel D'Amico interviews a New Orleans business owner about crime in the city after Hurricane Katrina. They observe that local businesses can play an important role in reducing crime and increasing the safety of communities. Entrepreneurs and businesses create more connections between people, offer support and economic opportunities, and provide what urbanist Jane Jacobs called "eyes on the street."

I just noticed that these videos aren't monetized. Just another tidbit that makes this channel awesome.

Oddly enough, this same cultural argument can be applied to guns. The more good guys with guns, the less likely that a bad guy with a gun can do much harm.

there is no evidence of that. You can't say USA has more guns and less crime in the past few years because there are different trends, causations, and correlations among cities and states. Illinois and New York state both have strict gun laws. Illinois has high crime rates, New York has relatively lower crime rates. I thought libertarians are open minded to helping mentally ill and impoverished people who make up most criminals especially with guns to solve the issue instead of saying "load up all your ammos and guns cuz America!!"

cb4allstar4 UK has seen a clear increase in crime when they implemented strict gun laws, which was compensated much later when spending in police was increased

cb4allstar4 1) Doesn't change the immadiate effect of the gun control 2) How easy it is for a frail woman to defend herself against a man with a knife using a firearm opposed to nothing? 3) You claimed there is no evidence and I gave evidence. Don't try to dismiss it just because the scope is different. 4) Most crimes don't use assault weapons 5) Which is why I gave an example of the same country before and after

cb4allstar4 There is actually plenty of evidence to support my claim. Yes, there are those few instances that tend not to support it ie, the country of Japan for example. It's more of a cultural difference and while we shouldn't' ignore that data point, the culture here in America is such that even if you wanted to change the culture, it would be almost impossible to do so. Severely limit the 2nd amendment and you would bring about civil war. As a libertarian, I see gun control, in any form, as a loss of freedom. Regardless, the point of the video was that people in communities that band together to promote a healthy society, will generally be better off. Security in those communities is a must. A shop keeper with a gun can deter a thug trying to rob him/her. A community of shop keepers with guns will reduce the crime rate even further. We can never eliminate crime completely, but we can deter it. I would much rather live in a society where the individuals are armed, than live in a society where only the police are armed. The former is a healthy society and the later is a police state.

Q-Hack! totally agree Q! I firmly believe there are more people that want to do good than evil in the united states and that is why I believe every person should carry a firearm, thus more good people with guns that would out weigh the bad. People can police themselves if you give them responsibility and respect. Not by crushing them with taxes and regulations turning them into criminals.

I do agree with this video core message. Wealth reduces crime. What new Orleans rly needed was economic boost not more government involment and stricker laws.

I read Jane Jacobs, and actually wrote a paper utilizing her discussion of how to best use public space for fostering community. This video begs the question though, if we are concerned that government in the form of extra policing isn't reducing crime, but community building is, can the government help play a role in that community building that could compound these positive effects (make starting a business easier, grants and funds for community programs or organizations, etc.)?

Plus, there is a snowball effect when you clean up, even sociopaths don't vandalize nice things in nice areas. So tidy up your own place.

I think ideally, it is still a matter of fairness. If you give without expecting anything in return, how long can you expect your generosity can last. Do you have sufficient level of trust in a community without the rule of law? Is there a trust culture? Does everyone value such a culture and contribute to maintain it instead of taking advantage of it? It is valuable, but fragile. If you have it, treasure it.

Do you think that its really just more eyes on the street, or is it more eyes AND some level of consequence when caught? I'd imagine (I don't live there) that part of the wild wild west mentality that was there after Katrina is the fact that people could commit a crime with relatively no repercussions. This seems to be the case in other places where crime is high, the repercussions are reduced by intimidation and an strong "no snitching" culture.

The actual punishment does not change the criminal intention, the certainty (or not) of getting caught, even if it is just a moral reprehension, is more important than the size of punishment applied!

I think the system is broken. I live in Buffalo, NY. Its the third poorest city, a 48% high school graduation rate, and a crime rate twice the national average. There are a lot of reprecussions of being convicted of a crime- which everyone knows. Jails are not rehabilitating here in the U.S.

I don't know that "Conscious Capitalism" save New Orleans. There are other variables in play such as criminal activities, the opportunity in chaos, law enforcement, investigators, and so on. Local business do, however, have "eyes on the street" and those entrepreneurs create economic opportunites, which hopefully reduces criminal activity somewhat.

Untrue. Crime doesn't lower because of more businesses. Crime lowers from moral volition. Measuring crime after a natural disaster isn't a fair assessment to the question because its an unusual circumstance in which people react under duress.
