The Number 10 position - a number and position associated with the greatest of footballing greats. But this position has been marginalised in the modern era. Teams have moved from one pivotal playmaker to a collective creative effort.
Until recently. The Number 10 is returning, the Number 10 is reinventing. Alex Stewart explains.

THE LEGENDS ARE BACK
I feel like Mourinho has always used a #10 this way (Deco, Lampard, Sneijder, & Oscar) and pundits used to criticize his overly defensive tactics, but today it is now considered an innovative and integral role in the “modern game”. At inter for example, One full back joins the midfield or stays back (Zanetti) while the other overlaps as a creative winger (Maicon), and a #10 helps out defensively (Sneijder).
great one Tifo!
Very insightful explanation of tactics
Modern day No:10s need workrate and stamina to roam from the central positions. This is what happened to Ozil. He never adapted. Modern No:10s either drop deep (like KDB), make runs across the CB (like Bruno Fernandes) or roams to wider positions (like Grealish)

Glad the animator had their fun moving the coach's arm, the flip at the end was a nice touch. The rest of the video was good too.
Great content from Tifo as usual. Maybe a next video on 'Are Barcelona down the same ladder as AC Milan were when the last won the Serie A'?
tifo contents never miss. top lads!
Great analysis
Im surprised you didnt mentioned Thomas Müller, who became a number ten. He is a hard working and fluid midfielder. And his ability to find space between the lines makes him so hard to defend
Such as David Silva when he was in city. Plus Bernardo Silva As well, but as a more all rounded midfielder, who roams freely. Hakan from Milan still plays as a classical number 10, and I enjoy it a lot.
Now the man not only rotates his arms in a 360 motion, but his arms are detachable and even he himself can rotate! Absolutely perfect Tifo!
Bruno Fernandez has definitely been one of the prime examples of re inventing the number 10 role, but TIFO's pick for the example is : Ibrahim Sangare!
great stuff tfo
It’s like being on the calm app listening to football analysis
I think an important part in reinventing the 10 in a more free and creative way is what Thomas Müller achieved as a "Raumdeuter", exploring space in different parts of the pitch and maintaining a defensive presence. This style of play is now adapted by many Number 10 players in different variations. Müller really was the first completely "free" 10.

This is one of the best soccer knowledge channels online
Kind of semantics really. In plenty of those 4-3-3s, one of the wingers often played more inside like a 10. This is still the case. Some years, depending on the coach and the players around him, Messi is probably more of a 10 than anything else. They never went away. Like a lot of things in football and modern life in general, the definitions simply became blurred.
Omg i was talking about today with my brother . The #10 has changed.

I'm a celtic fan and he was great for us, seen him more as a box to box 8 though with a goal threat, he's a great athlete and works well for the team out of possession, and can bomb forward, shoot from range and end up on the end of things as a 3rd man runner from midfield.

@@miguelbraz2629 Bruno does play as the number 10 in the utd system. Your point is right though, Grealish should’ve got a mention considering Rodriguez did, as they play somewhat similar roles drifting infield
I said this when 10s were out if fashion for a few years. The old 10s sat in zone 14 and distributed and cteate. Modern football (starting 15 years ago). Space and creativity was found by switching zones and positions. Overlaps, underlaps, deep 8s, false 9s. It was the lady static attacking position
I think one of the biggest believer in the number 10 which is supposed to be the most creative role is the most criticized coach in this channel. Jose Mourinho has always believed in this role. Deco (Porto), Lampard (Chelsea), Sneijder (Inter), Ozil (Madrid) and even now with Nbombele at Spurs who have been superb.

I played sweeper in my day....need I say more? If you are under 30 you have probably never heard of the position. It was a free roam defender that played as the "1" in a 3-1-3-3 formation, used heavily in the early 90's.

Awesome piece... But is the number #10 role (and many others) in modern football become more of a function rather than a position?
I think it is possible to have traditional 10s and at the same time roles they do now days covered by inverting full backs to the center and half space
I do prefer the old school number 10s. They were the players that made me love football where as today it’s all about being athletic and stat padding. Back in the day they were pure footballers but that’s why I like Jack Grealish he is a throwback. Imo he’s the best player in the league considering the level of players he has around him and what he does. I’m a Man Utd fan btw.
Great stuff although it isn't really new for a not to have high mobility. not all 10's were stationary like a Riquelme type. there were many that drifted wide or dropped deep as occasions arose.
Ah ha yall took my advice on covering the evolution of the ten
Another great educational video from Tifo. Though I am disappointed they keep reading Portuguese names like they're Spaniards. Hope people will learn the correct Portuguese pronunciations once Portugal wins the Euro this summer.
My favorite 10 who Is often overlooked is Juan Mata
I don't know what it is about the animations for the manager's arm rotating but it's quite unnerving
Bruno Fernandes now plays as a sort of second striker when he is not the one crossing he is in the box at the end of it just like when he scored vs West Brom or Southampton. He's defo not the typical num 10 like Ozil he has a role akin to Dele Alli with Poch
The sport is always evolving, but I still miss the classic #10's such as Zidane and Ronaldinho who would create something beautiful with grace, style and seemingly with minimal effort. Guti's audacious back heels are now a whisper in the wind. Players like Ozil couldn't find a place in the Premier League anymore, and his defence splitting passes just faded away over time. Nowadays your typical #10 operates either in this more modern backtracking role from the CAM position, or as a False Nine. It's just not the same.
Do a video about Sporting Lisbon. They lost Bruno Fernandes but were able to reconstruct a team with a lot of young talents and lead the league.
Grew up with football in mid 90s and through the 2000s some numbers are very iconic at least for me. 10 : MF/OH 9 : CF (duh!) 7, 11, 17 : SH/WG 2, 3 : LB/RB 4,5,6 : CB
Cuactemo Blanco was one of my favorite number 10s
