The Record That Will Never Be Broken
The WM P88, a French sports prototype racing car, gained fame by breaking the speed record at the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team's goal was to exceed 400 km/h (248.5 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight. Achieving this required meticulous aerodynamic refinements and a powerful Peugeot engine. During qualifying, driver Roger Dorchy reached a peak speed of 405 km/h (251.1 mph), setting a new record. Although the car did not finish the race due to mechanical issues, its record-breaking speed remains a historic achievement in endurance racing history.

The subject of this video is interesting, but the video would be so much better without all the stock photos and irrelevant clips that has nothing to do with the P88. And the same goes for all the cliches and blah blah blah.

Always loved this story, no fucks given, just going straight for the top speed record, an underdog effort, and a forever French king of speed at LeMans, unlikely to ever be beaten. The C9 Sauber got up to 400 kph, the Jags did 395, and some sketchy "~1100hp faulty" Nissan fell just short (after the chicanes were set), but none could do it, magical.

Thank You for another mgnificent production. I still have not worked out what was more awe-inspiring: the horsepower ratings of these small European engines or the intriguing shape of the wheel arches, (or lack of) on the P88. Also thanks for a fresh pronunciation of the name Peugeot. As a child I might have read it before hearing anyone speak it aloud, and so I always called them PIEw-joe, as in Pepe le Pew, with the emphasis on the first syllable. Then in high school ensued prolonged arguments with friends who pronounced it PURR-joe, as in purring kittens, again with the emphasis on syllable #1. Now hearing the name pronounced purr-JOE, with the emphasis on the second syllable, I concede that my childish phoenetic pronunciation, based on reading the name in a book without ever having heard it spoken, was err, well, inaccurate to put it gently. Which of the other two is correct; which syllable to emphasise? I'll leave that between you and my high school mates. (who would agree with me that Porsche has one syllable - silent E)
