The Reason Why "Sector Dial" Watches are Undervalued (Omega, JLC, Longines, Patek)

Ойын-сауық

A Discussion around Sector Dial Watches. Why are they still under-appreciated today? Their biggest strength is also their weakness, they are a product of their time (1930's and 1940's) and naturally would only appeal to the watch enthusiast today. But this small niche offers so much variety and some of the most beautifully addressed designs to date. A touch of minimalism with complex uses of line-weight, balance and proportions.

    I’m a lower-middle class 20 year old so logistically, I should not have any appeal towards sector dial watches, but for some reason, they’re my favorite. While I only own a mechaquartz, sector inspired watch, I just love it. It’s so clean and timeless and simple, something that’s hard to find these days.

Perfect simple balanced dial, hours staying within the circle, little color elements keeping it interesting and, best of all, it can be an everyday watch, formal and casual. Thanks for another great look at such an interesting design. The JLC series is one I think about a lot in terms of my own collection. I went for the mainline Master Control Chronograph rather than the sector dial variant, preferring the more richly appointed, appliqué dial. With that said, the clarity and contrast of the sector dial is so striking, particularly with the rather vivid blue tachymeter, that seeing photos always has me questioning my choice.

    The real draw for me for the sector dial is the at a glance legibility. The Longines silver dial version is nigh on perfect, the small seconds hand is placed such that you cannot confuse it with the hour and minute hands but you can easily see how far through the minute you are. Another Longines with concentric circles but not really a sector dial would be the Tuxedo from the same art deco era. I have to agree with the mention of the Dolce Vita version as well with the discreet date complication that just works for me anyway..

  • @ID-Guy

    @ID-Guy

    It's quite amazing how they all have legibility nailed. And then looking at it twice do you see the other 100's of lines and hash marks 😆 Great shout on the Tux (I considered it but thought it looked too "out there" compared to the others) and I've come across so many enthusiasts that love those gondolo cases of Oris / Patek / Longines! So awesome to see that this kind of dial exists with this model now too. Longines just keeps hitting it out the park...

In all seriousness I’ve been eyeing to buy a dedicated dress watch, and recently the sector dial, especially in tuxedo form is calling me, I’d like to ask the following, based on your description, and although they’re from a different time, does the polerouter count as a sector dial, I say it due to that alternating finish between the outer and inner dial with the crosshairs that make the polerouter, well a polerouter.

    I had a 5296G-001 (Calatrava date with sector dial) which I sold last summer after I acquired my 5212A. It was an exquisite piece. If I had some minor criticisms: the size was a tad small for an everyday wear; it had no hacking seconds; the dial (though beautiful) did lack contrast when viewed from a distance - the printed sector markings effectively paled out to white. But it was nevertheless a great watch - among the best I've owned.

    Great discussion of some fabulous watches! The JLC Master Chronograph is one of the best looking modern watches, full stop! Retro done right! Chrono sub-registers and sectors - oh my days! I'm also a huge fan of the Longines (actually, I think it's design is better than the JLC Master date). That LF was very cool, as were the Baltics. I think the Omega is very nice, but a little big, even accounting for the ability of sector dials to shrink the watch. Several Reversos are worth checking out for a rectangular take on sector design...

    I love how the Mido Multifort Patriomony uses the inner circle to postion the date window above the 6 without looking out of place like a random floating box. 3, date, 9, 12 dials can sometimes look a bit top heavy to me, so I love how the execution of the date window in this watch preserves the 6 hour marker.

    This analysis was very interesting--and nothing like it exists among KZread watch channels. It's incredible how people just look past sector dials when they are so distinctive and inherently interesting. The grey Longines Heritage Classic was in a Longines display cabinet in an area store for a looong time. I saw it when I bought a different Longines half a year ago. It was around a bunch of dive watches and other creations. No offense to those, but this is iconic and at a great price. I asked why it was still there, and the rep was a bit puzzled too. It was in a massive box (why does Longines do this?). When the box was opened and the watch placed in it, the light caught the dial and the result was stunning. The blue NATO second strap added a color contrast alongside the watch in the box, showing how different straps would alter the appearance. The reps their were, I believe, honestly impressed. I suppose it's better that the mass buy Longines dive watches over Daniel Wellington or Invicta.

    It's always going to be a personal preference thing at the end of the day. For us, designs and styles like that are "supplementary" I mean my Longines model was a black dial pilot chronograph 😆 But seeing that newly released CK589 has gotten the community excited all of a sudden (many are going out to pick them up). Maybe that's what the sector dial needs? A bit more romance (maybe a higher price tag & less offensive design?) 🥃

    Such a great design. You're right as usual , they are so underrated. To me they scream elegance and precision, with chronographs adding a sports touch. The kind of watch you'd expect an architect or "Designer" to wear. Absolutely love the Omega but as usual the great balance of quality and value , Longines strikes again. The 9 and 3 applied radially just work so well and so many of these watches have such elegant heat blued sword or syringe hands. From an enthusiasts point it's hard to believe these watches are not in the line up of all the leading players and are sort after. However I guess in our current sports watch dominated market , their dressier, quirkier design just doesn't cut it. I'd love a sector dial , but just how big do you let your watch lust list get? I adore a sector dial and how it was birthed via function and military application. That the division into sectors, or added complication, aided 'at a glance' legibility. A well executed sector dial - 34mm to 39mm (depending on the piece, depending on the wrist) on a Forstner Ladder or Beads of Rice bracelet is, to me, the epitome of a modern dress watch. Masculine, bordering on rugged and undeniably elegant. The Serica California TXD is a great under the radar contender, and the Baltic Bicompax MkII is impressive but as you said, Longines do it so well and offer hetitage at a price point that works well for a dress watch. Re your Tudor; I'm beginning to think that maybe you picked up one of the last Asian market two-tone Date-Day's that had the forums in a ruckus not long ago?

    Wow not only is IDguy wearing a collared shirt, he's gone *full sepia!* So glad Omega is taking the rotors off movements to thin them out but I do wish they did something to make it look a more like it was supposed to be a manual winding movement and a little less ugly. On the whole its progress and this is a GREAT looking watch.

    As you stated in the video, the sector dial is an exemplary exercise in design: proper line weight, spacing, legibility, readability etc. I'm a wee bit obsessive compulsive so if I'm tasked to design a sector dial I'd probably go crazy and have meltdown 😄. Furthermore, aren't sector dials precursors for even more "extreme" dials like Breitling's Navitimer with its bombardment of sectors on top of other sectors? Anyhoo, sector dials are cool and I need to check 'em out more 👍. Cheers 🍺.

    Longines or Baltic? I really like the longines dial but I don't have a lot of cash to blow. If I get the Baltic, I'd have enough in my budget to buy another watch to diversify my collection, plus more to spare.. But I would be getting a lower quality movement and a less refined build finish. Thoughts?

  • @hieudang4849

    @hieudang4849

    Жыл бұрын

    Wow, this is a really tough decision. I feel for you. I have to disagree on "less refined build finish" - I suggest you go look at other videos on the Baltic. The finishing is incredible. Also if you are a fan of acrylic/hesalite crystal, the Baltic offers that too. The only thing you would sacrifice is indeed a lower quality movement. HOWEVER, the story is little more complicated than that. The Longines movement has a smoother second hand's sweep (3.5hz vs Miyota 8315's 3hz on the Baltic), while ALSO has 4 hours of power reserve (64 vs 60). It also uses free sprung balance, in addition to having a silicon balance spring - which is huge. Both of the mentioned features immensely improves a watch's accuracy, and in the case of the silicon balance spring - anti magnetism too. All these SWATCH group movements are easily within COSC standard OUT OF THE BOX. Free sprung balance on the other hand, while improves the watch positional variance, is a PAIN in the butt to regulate, if you do not have a special equipment. If you have any intentions of DIY regulation, Longines is not the way to go. So it really is the movement that you are paying additional $2000 for (plus the brand name). Because honestly Baltic's finishing is incredible on its own, and as someone who has always loved vintage watches' design AND purpose, acrylic crystal has always been preferable to me, no matter how much AR coating other brands are applying on their sapphire crystal. TLDR: you're paying $2000 more for an incredible movement but is MUCH harder to regulate. Baltic's finishing punches WAY above its price, and I prefer its hesalite crystal. I hope that my comment helps you decide. Cheers!
