The Reality of Becoming a Better Skier

Спорт

In this video, you get to tag along with us during day 2 and 5 of our first-ever Ski Technique Camp. Among many changes, we had to make to abide by the Swiss regulations we had to remove all indoor activities despite that our skiers were stoked. For 2022 when things might be back to normal I think the ski camps we will be even more appreciated. Join our next Ski Technique Camp here: stompittutorials.com/camps/

Wow, what a difference from day 2 to day 5 for those guys. They looked so stiff and upright in their stances on day 2, the ease and confidence in their skiing on day 5 was palpable. Very impressed I really can't wait to spend a wk there training myself. PS-never imagined you all have to deal with the rain on occasion like us Lake Tahoe skiers.

That is so awesome, I just discovered you all in June, now I start my day practicing Slopeside 360's in the beginning flats too! I'm so humbled by your dedication & desire to improve your skiing, bad-ass that you are Jens! Before June I can't say I ever really had skiing "goals", aside from the desire to improve. Now I arrive at the mtn with written notes highlighting the days objectives. It's actually a fun challenge, and very gratifying when I try something new and have success. Or not, like not quite hitting the 180 last season. But thanks to you all I have tutorials, things to practice and train on, and an action plan for next season. Only knowing you all less than 2 months has improved my skiing to the point that I made new friends being able to largely keep pace with the big mogul ballers atop Chair #23 at Mammoth. I can't thank you all enough, recommend your products enough, and can't wait to retire and get over to a camp in fall 2024 hopefully. Cheers, much love, and be safe mates!

I think some work on functional balance/stance is helpful prior to addressing upper and lower body separation. If I see a student is overflexing in the knees and hips I know they will be a whole body turner as overflexing the hips locks them and prevents the student from creating counter-rotation. Fore/aft balance is the hardest skill to master but pays the largest dividens, IMHO. I would be curious as to what you and Josh think.

Are 270's out considered hard in skiing? because they are in snowboarding and I learned to do them on skis within two days of learning how to grind a rail. I tried skiing for the first time like 4 years ago, didnt really get in to it so I stayed a pure casual snowboarder. I steadily progressed as a snowboarder and I'm proud to say I'm pretty good at rails but nothing spectacular. I can do 360's out, 270's out (only backside boardslide) and ofc 180's both ways. I can also do all the different grinds on any rail you can find except the lipslide for frontside boardsliding. This took me very long to get to this point in snowboarding, and I wonder how I was able to get to basically doing 270's out both ways with skis in two days. For context I rented skis two days ago for the first time since 4-3 years ago and a friend of mine taught me to grind a flat rail. Yesterday I asked to borrow my sisters skis and if I could use them on my backyard rail setup. She said why not and I spent a good hour grinding my flat rail, with the end result being me being able to do 270's out both ways pretty consistently and lipsliding to fakie and forward. Should I consider buying my own skis, and become a weirdo who can do both snowboarding and skiing, or should I just accept the fact that what I did wasn't actually considered hard at all. I guess my long history as a snowboarder helped me with confidence, form and fear management but skiing tricks are very obviously very different from snowboarding tricks. So, to any skiers: Did you learn these tricks the first year you were introduced to rails, or did it take you longer? Are these considered beginner tricks? I haven't told my friend about me learning them because were going skiing again in a few days and I kinda wanna surprise him, but is it a surprise if the tricks I wanna show him are just easy tricks to learn right after first learning grinding? not really.

Do some practice runs every time you go skiing. Take a topic you wanna work on and do a corresponding exercise for one run, next run something different. And thereafter enjoy skiing without thinking. I can’t remember a skiing day in the last 5-6 years I haven’t done any exercises. Usually my ski days are between 30-40 a season. The better you get the more fun skiing will be!

Polish guy: you're too far back. You are rotating around the last 20% of your ski...you can almost see the fronts of your skis come off the ground. That is the difficult way. Rotate around the front of your skis, about 1/3 the way from your tip to your boot, by throwing your weight forward as you initiate your turn. It's almost the same move as when you do a hockey stop, but you just don't do it as much and leave the edges engaged.

It is so obvious when I look at this video that pole-plant makes no real big difference, putting the attention to the pole-plant makes your skiers to forget more important issues. They should create edge angels when starting their turns and they should make a body projection, before the skis may start to turn on the edges. These guys make no body projections most of the time and this is the most important issue I would try to make them to perform.
