I think the pretender aka MT-10/R1 sounds just as good as a V4 and sounds like a little V8 with a decat exhaust. From experience the cross plane engine is a bit smoother. Having said all that, both bikes are superb!

I think you're slowly falling in love with it Chops. Womble's RSV is a beautiful bike too but I wonder if he possibly hasn't quite got his suspension & electronics settings dialed in if it's pitching him out of the seat etc? Point being there's possibly scope for it to ride even more nicely than it already does.

Kinda my perfect video having owned a 2019 Tuono and currently owning a 2022 MT10 SP. My take is the Tuono sounds better, is faster. both handle about the same but everythinhg else goes the the SP. Comfort, easier to ride, servicing costs, dealer network. The important thing though is that they both give you extreme smiles per miles

Cross plane crank motors have been around for a while but Yamaha and Rossi made them famous in 2004 winning the MotoGP championship on a manufacturers bike that only had one 3rd place podium the previous year. Yamaha made three motors for Rossi to test after January 1st as Honda would not let him ride the Yamaha until his contract fully expired. Vale picked the cross plan motor for the power delivery and won the championship and the first race on the M1. I loaded his M1 onto a trailer when I worked for Yamaha and it was like a feather it was so light!

When you decat them they can be way too loud depending on the end can. I took mine to Andy at junction 33 development to get it ECU flashed and asked him about it and he told me about the high flow cat I them.

I was torn between the MT10 and Tuono however I’m also a 20 stone fatty and the MT-10 just fit me like a glove. I think if you have either in your stable you won’t be unhappy. I am warming up to this sp01. Still I’d probably chuck a lower handle bars just for the looks and a bit more sporty position. Ps. This English breakfast during British summer brought some nostalgia and a good chuckle. I kind of miss it.

Guys the lights flashing on the top of the Aprilia dash are the rev limiter lights. from OE it is set low (circa 8,000). Set it to nearer the redline (where it should be), and all that goes away. Believe me when invasive electronics really kicks in you will know it. Defo not kicking in on the road unless you have it set to scooter level numbers, and certainly not for your little tickle accelerations. 😃😉😉

Regarding the electronics of the Tuono keep calibrating these on a regular basis. Let's say every 1000 Miles or so to compensate for tire wear. By doing that you can ensure they stay consistant. The noticeable intrusive wheelie control will behave waaay better on level 1 after doing that I suppose. At least I experienced this issue and solved it that way. Level 3 is completly useless in my opinion :)

But electronics aside, it's still one hell of a package, esp for my jockey-like physique. Noise, poise and theatre. Though like a few of the other comments point out, you've got to set up particularly the rear shock to exploit the bike properly on the road. The later bikes with the semi-active Ohlins make it easy. I've had an MT10(160PS) for 5 1/2 years and I've also had an extended go on the new MT10 (166PS) and I didn't like the new model. In my opinion, they have spoilt the sound(not a noise) by giving it too much induction noise. Clearly the new model still has a horrible seat (which is why so many of us buy the comfort seat, which is lovely). I was ready to buy the new model, but I didn't like it and will wait for the next version.

So, my mate has the new MT10 SP with the akra pipe and you can still barely hear it. When we go out my 2010 speed triple is way louder even when the arrow pipes still have their baffles in. All that rubbish in the dustbin under the bike has killed the sound on new machines. The MT has a lovely intake howl, but the exhaust note is about a loud as a butterfly farting 🥲

I bought a MT 10 in Juli and put 7400km on it in three month, I love it. I chose it over the Aprilia, because of Japanese reliability, the seating position, the better handling in town and twisty roads and lower service costs (valve check on a v4 at 24Tkm vs. inline 4 at 40Tkm). But my MT 10 will not start anymore, I have to bring it to the dealer. I had Triumph, Ducati, KTM and Husqvarna, no issues whatsoever. I did not expect this form a Yamaha.

To further enhance the bike, I would upgrade to the Akra exhaust pipe (or to a full system, if possible, add SBS track / road performance brake pads, a DNA air filter and go for an professional ECU reprogramming to see 160 - 170 whp with optimised fuelling / driveability (in-gear acceleration) 😎🏁

@@RichardASK Wheel hp are measured on the rollers. If the tuning effort should read 160 whp - depending quite a bit on the exhaust system chosen (stock is way below due to Euro5 emission regulations, the throttle does not fully open at every rpm-level) - then this translates to about +10% hp at the crank. You would notice a considerable increase of mid- and high rpm punch.

Brakes are still 💩 on the mt compared to much of the Brembo stuff that many competitors are now using, even on some of the Japanese brands. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge yamaha fan, I have an '18 mt10. Just using a good quality sintered pad makes by far the biggest improvement, EBC DOUBLE-H sintered is what I use. The biggest and best improvement on the mt10 is competently tuning or "flashing" the ecu. I literally thought I was riding a different bike after the flash. The only downfall is that fuel mileage goes from bad to terrible! I get about 25mpg the way I ride and I'm 63...lol. Just the price of admission on the Yamaha if you want it to actually run healthy. These bikes are absolutely strangled to meet euro5. They run SO lean, especially down low to mid rpm from the factory. Yes, the new gen are absolutely the same! My tuner proved it as he owns a new gen. When you remove the exhaust system on the new gen, you're looking at exactly the same engine. I bought mine with 1k miles on it for $9600, practically new. Another $300 for the ecu tune and I found a bargain on a Yoshimura 3/4 decat system for $600. 95% of the power gain came from the ecu flash, NOT the exhaust system. Exhaust adds a few hp but mostly just accentuates that beautiful music produced by the brilliant yamaha cp4! One hell of a bargain for one shit-eatin grin inducing machine! 150whp of pure jailbait!

I guess when you say the MT rides like a V4, you mean it's got a ton of low end/midrange grunt! Older sport bikes are more like that with warp speed kicking in as 6-7k rpms are reached. Manufacturers need to do that more as they used to, but people want slower accelerating bikes as they don't see that as they see they can do 200+mph that they will never see 🤣🤣 Kawasaki should bring out a ZX9r anniversary edition ZX10r next year in the old liveries and tuned and geared for acceleration and a max speed of 170-180mph (like my E1 ZX9r 😁), the B1 9r released 1994.
