I switched from Sony to the Leica SL2-s right when this video came out. Was worried I'd made a mistake, but so far I've been so happy with it. I'm excited to pick up my camera and I have yet to miss any important photos on a wedding day. It's weird to have taken a step back to the old days of AFS and single point... but it's working!

The lack of 3rd party lenses for Canon was definitely the reason I chose Sony for a new camera. The SOOC images aren't as good as my Fuji, but the images are sharp and the AF is superior. I did just trade my old Nikon gear for a Canon 5d classic, but it's probably the only Canon I'll ever get.

I shot Sony from 2016-18 and then switched to Fujifilm. I tried to switch to Canon almost 2 years ago and had the r6. This was before they closed the mount and the body felt great in hand but I found the color science to be terrible, especially when compared to the R5. Ended up coming back home to Sony!

I shoot stills only, and moved from Canon to Sony with the A9 5 years ago. Went back to Canon with the R5 for one main reason: the way aperture works with Sony. When you stop down, it actually focusses stopped down, where Canon always focusses wide open, only stopping down when you take the picture. This means a great deal shooting with shorter lenses stopped down in low light, in the studio for example. I just don't want to shoot wide open all the time..

Just wanted to send him this video if you didn't have anything else you'd change. Thanks man!

I made gradual switches. I chose Nikon at the time because they had the F mount instead of Canon changing their lens mounts over the years. Then, I switched to Pentax because they kept the K mount for decades. I’ve kept my Pentax k1ii FF and added a Leica and Fuji to the collection. Each of those three brands have something unique and different to offer me at a better value than canikon. I mean, come on…how could I buy a product from Canon when they even included “certificate of professional photographer” in their camera body boxes :P

Been a Fuji shooter for a few years now (X-Pro2 with primes) and use a canon R5C for work. But I’ve also had a canon R, which I now sold. And while waiting waiting for the R mk2 to arrive, I started to think whether I should hold on to my old Canon EF L lenses, or just sell them on and go with the A74. My main interest is in the new contemporary Sigma lenses which are available for the E mount, but probably will never be for Canon, and if they are I bet they would loose the aperture ring anyway. I basically want that same tactile and intuitive feel to a FF camera that the Fuji gives me with all its dials, without having to actually sell my kidney for a Leica 😆

I have both Sony and Canon gear (and Fuji). First in terms of AF latest canon cameras are on par with Sony. Especially when it comes to things like tracking birds. In fact, Canon R8 which has been on sale for $1199 forever had autofocus system lifted from R3 and 40fps with full autofocus which tracks not much different from my Sony a1. R8 also has three fastest sensor readout among cameras without stacked sensor, across all brands - 14.7ms. Sony a9 and a1 are great but sensor readout on a7r class and a7x class is atrocious. A7r5 has one of the slowest sensor readouts currently available among all brands which means you have to resort to mechanical shutter which is also the loudest ever and scares the small birds away. When it comes to canon lenses I agree third party lens block is an issue but the RF lenses canon release are to die for, take for example canon 28-70/2.0 which has sublime rendering and there is nothing in Sony camp that compares. Sony has some amazing glass too like 50/1.2 gm is amazing. Going back to canon r8 name any Sony full frame camera that can do the same for the price.

My lineage is as follows: x100f-->xpro2-->XT3-->Leica Q-->Canon R6mii. Here are my thoughts...I loved Fujifilm and found the company to be great to deal with. Lenses are very cheap by comparison. Colors cant be beat, simulations awesome. However, AF really frustrating. Sold all to fund a Q and loved it. When it hit it really hit. Joy to use as a daily but started to feel limited on shoots so sold to fund the Canon. I knew about the embargo but jumped in assuming it would change. The ergonomics are so much better than Sony...feels more like a tool. Overall happy but started looking at my kit and realized with just three lenses Im sitting at almost $8000 and I still need at least one more to cover my bases. WTF. I am convinced now more than ever the embargo is here to stay. I am highly considering cutting my losses and jumping to Sony because of the sheer amount of options and getting another daily like a q2 because I really loved the camera. I shoot lifestyle portraiture semi professionally. Take care. The GFX is not off of the table either....

Hi Benj, many many thanks for your wonderful videos. All your words worth a gold because you are the one take really nice pictures for jobs, be frank and really nice. Thanks. I would like to seek your advice for my jobs too. My wedding set-up are: 1. Main gear is “M10+28lux+50Noct” 2. Second key gear is “Pentax67+105” or “Rolleiflex” with NPH400 or Portra 400 3. Spare gear is “Sony+GMs” for get-the-job-done pictures I really want to seek your advice if I could replace my “Pentax67+105” with NPH400 or Portra 400 by the GFX50sii. My client loves the Pentax67 & Rolleiflex’s high key, low contrast, low saturation film NPH400 tone. But film is so expensive which I couldn’t justify to do it, even in a job. After reviewing all your videos, I find that all your raw-edit are great. Your videos educate me that, even with a sony’sRAW + edit skill + your presets, I could achieve the look. I honestly love your photos edits for wedding. But I never come close to edit like you and I am lazy. I wish to achieve these looks without a RAW edit. Do you think “GFX’s jpg + recipe” can do the job? Am I able to achieve the “high key + low contrast + low saturation + square format + NPH400 tone”? Of course, these will not be 100%. But I am thinking it may reduce my workflow time and $ for film on my Pentax67 part of presentation. Indeed, should I dump my sony for GFX if the jpg are great? Sorry for such a long question. Hopefull you could offer some ideas before I jumping into another system. Thanks a lot. Only 20ish percent of people use canon as their primary system now. Sony is up to almost 50% of the market. Pretty embarrassing. Maybe they don't care. My frustrations are- 1- Making me pay for adaptors to their new mirrorless system 2- Refusing to service older lenses. 3- Zero interest in what wedding filmmakers are doing. 4- Non-Canon lens capability and adaptors. 5- Their expensive, non-helpful CPS system that advertises lens borrowing during repair but actually doesn't seem to exist. See ya Canon!

And as much as you say RF glass is limited, Sony just doesn’t have anything like the 28-70 RF, any tilt shift lenses, and they’re just getting there with long telephotos. UX and reliability are also considerations.

@@glassworkscreative lots of my friends got broken hot shoe & shutter issue on Canon R6/R on the job. Also RF lenses tend to be much heavier & larger except 70-200mm. For Sony zoom at least 7 standard zoom lenses 2.8 24-/28-70mm. Choose depending on your budget & type of shoot. Lots of video shooter now want lighter setup, 28-70 sigma weight only 470g. Some doesn't have budget, using EF lenses for video, very front heavy & less ergonomic for long usage

I left Sony for Fuji. Sony has no soul, boring, and did not see real sharpness, very bad colors. Now with Fuji (X-H2) I have recovered the illusion and I have a lot of sharpness and nice colors!

Be careful jumping into bed with a camera company as they will tell you to ditch Leica. I shot Sony for nearly 3 years (A9) and found it to be some of the most frustrating years of me shooting weddings. I developed awful habits of shooting everything through live view, my shot rate doubled, editing time doubled, found I was not looking for the moment just shooting on high burst. I felt that the art of photography is severely diminished with these cameras and so I switched to Leica for everything. Afraid I disagree on the focus system in SL2-S . In continuous it’s never failed me, it’s weird that it doesn’t track in high speed but other than that I find it spot on. in one shot it’s slow granted, slower than Sony but still accurate If you want thousands of shots, everything in focus then go for Sony, if you want to think about your craft , perfect your technique and enjoy shooting don’t use Sony as it will drain that from you Just my 2 cents

Haha, believe me, no one is telling my to ditch Leica, especially from Sony. As I mentioned in the Q&A portion, it's a balance. Unfortunately the SL2-S missed too many photos at actual weddings that I had with the 50APO. Beautiful combo and experience, but when it came down to it, I didn't want to spend more than double and worry about missing frames.

Lots of professional photographers shoot with Sony and get along just fine. Not sure how you struggled with a Sony which has much better focusing tracking modes than an SL2. Still, at the end of the day, whatever you feel comfortable using.

I couldn’t give a hoot. Benj obviously has a bottomless pit of money…. Tbh his videos are getting weird as he’s a gear freak. All working pros I know keep their cameras for years and create amazing work, Benj changes his cameras and lenses as much as someone changes their underwear. One minute it’s Canon, then it’s Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Leica and now Sony. A veritable brag fest. After a while these KZreadrs lose their credibility in my eyes.
