The Real Reasons Doug Ford Closed the Science Center

The Ontario Provincial government shut down the Ontario Science Center with only a few hours notice, citing safety concerns coming from a few damaged roof tiles. What seemed like a simple decision, made to keep people safe, has received a lot of criticism for being a calculated political move.
To understand why Doug Ford's government shut down the Science Center, we have to look at its relationship with Ontario Place, another Toronto institution that has seen better days. All of that leads to a complicated story of backroom political deals, money making opportunities, and maybe even corruption.

    I would say this is more like you're driving around in an old gas guzzling chevy pickup with a new Toyota hybrid coming in next week when it turns out you have some pretty serious engine work that needs to be done. You can drop all that money into this truck so you have something for the next week or so, or you can get rid of this thing. Go without a car for a bit. And then someone else can take this truck and do something with it like make a house or something. At least that's what I'm getting from this video.

"The De Gasperis family purchased the Celestica property across from the Science Centre less than a month before Doug Ford announced the Ontario Line would extend to that location!" This family owns TACC, which operates others such as "Eastern Avenue (Condo), a company associated with the deGasperis family of Aspen Ridge Homes." They also bought property at The Foundry for $101 million from the province by way of MZO emergency order. It was a historical property, and was protected until Ford sold it, with plans to demolish its history.

    The Science Centre is a cornerstone of not only my childhood experience as a Toronto kid, but of many kids like me. Curiosity and the desire for lifelong learning are important traits to nurture in children. Culture and education are invaluable parts of a society to respect and preserve. The Science Centre provided so many kids like me with a place to connect with their parents and siblings over the love of science. Doug Ford isn’t just closing this place - he is STEALING it from the citizens who live here, and he is STEALING this experience from our future children, all in the name of making a couple bucks. Almost everything I know from my Canadian childhood is either gone or disappearing. Alongside the other issues we are already facing, this makes me feel incredibly disenfranchised with Canada as a whole. It doesn’t feel like home any more.

    I remember going to the science center on a school trip in the 70's and it blew me away as a kid back then. Sadly I don't think I ever went back after that. I agree however that our governments at all levels, seem to be more than willing to destroy good old buildings, in favor of new ones. The past is given little consideration when deciding if a building is useful or not. Case in point, look up Garth Turner and Elgin Hall. A sad story that seems all too common in Canada, which is fast becoming the country of no culture, other than the culture of destroy and build.

The condos on that site would be twice as profitable if there was another piece of land right beside it where they could build another project f the same scale and at a higher profit margin. Surprise, surprise, Surprise! Same thing as the leveling of a block of houses beside Pape station that bought over market price by Metorlinx. There is a developer waiting to redevelop that city block when Metrolinx is finished using it for the Ontario line. #GomerPileUSMC

    IMHO - you're hitting on the fact that Ontario doesn't really make sense as a political unit for the powers and responsibility of a province. There are simply too many people, too much economic activity, in the GTA for Queen's Park to give sufficient time and attention to the issues of most of the rest of the land mass of the province. The GTA is where the votes are, and while there's lots of money in Ontario's extraction industries, the majority of the money is still in the GTA. This isn't an attention problem, it's a structural problem. Ontario should be like four or five provinces.

Permanently. His engineering report says the Science Centre needs maintenance - does not say it needs to be closed. - Ford is away on vacation. Construction and demolition equipment are already on site across the road, set to go to work before the public can intervene. - Ford, never known for moving fast, unveils and executes a plan to turn a world-class Ontario icon into condos on a Friday, then disappears before anyone can answer the phone at Queens Park. • @Themohr

    @Themohr

    17 күн бұрын

    Don't you think that's a bit of a disingenuous comparison? I mean, in theory at least, parks in Toronto help to increase tourism and general economic activity. That's all taxed, meaning (again in theory - it really depends on how those holding the purse strings choose to act) there's more money overall. But let's flip this around - let's say the highways near Timmins need repair because they've been pulverized by the heavy trucks carrying ore out of the mines. How does that help the millions of people in Toronto? The honest answer is that both investments provide more opportunity for people to do things, and making it easy for people to go out and do things, earning and spending money, is how you foster an economy. With all that said, you're right that Queen's Park doesn't have the bandwidth to give due time and attention to vast swaths of the province.

I live in Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood, and since Ford came in, he unilaterality took land and made business out to build the Metrolinx train yard. Ever since he came in, big Real-estate investors come as a hoard to the neighborhood, bought the buildings, did little paint job, and started gouging rent prices and applying Above-Guideline Rent increases to price older tenants and bring new tenants who would pay more. In my experience here in Canada, I've seen many bad things by the Ford Government. I wish if you can talk about the rent strikes happening in all over the city. It was alleged that then former City Councillor Doug Ford intimidated her opponent in favour of Surma.[7][5] Further controversies regarding the election followed as Ford was accused of breaking party rules by purchasing party memberships to secure voters for the election of Surma.[5] This came after the release of an audio recording of Ford recruiting members with Surma, claiming memberships are free despite voting being only open to party members who pay a membership fee.[8] PC party chair Walied Soliman cleared Ford of wrongdoing in 2018.[8] Is she one of Dog Fords cronies? How ironic, he'll probably just tear it down and have shitty condos built by the lowest bidder. Toronto is slowly losing the character and charm it once had. The science center is a brutalist landmark and staple in science education.

    You do know that the old city subsidizes us in Scarborough rather heavily, right? We're too sprawling, so we rely on their tax base to pay for our road maintenance. Hard to complain when we're the mooches.

Scarborough is full of potholes and cracks in the roadways, I know issures that haven’t been fixed but instead fixing them they have a sign alerting of the potholes. Ford has cost more than that by far. The bill 124 lawsuit is costing us at least $6 billion alone. Simple math shows that single example is 6 times as costly as McGuinty's boondoggle.
