The Real Reason You Don't See Chi-Chi's Restaurants Around Anymore

Ойын-сауық

If you’re looking for a good, authentic Mexican meal, you definitely shouldn’t go to Chi-Chi’s. In fact, you couldn’t even go to one in America if you wanted to, as the chain only exists overseas these days. The chain was one of the first Mexican restaurants to really take off in the United States, but it was far from authentic Mexican fare, and there were plenty of other scandals and controversies as well. However, you still might see the brand at your local grocery store. Let’s take a look at the real reason why you don’t see Chi-Chi’s restaurants around anymore.

Tasting "real" Mexican food hasn't affected Taco Bell or Del Taco. And there's still plenty of independent Mexican restaurants near me that smother everything in cheese and sour cream and serve it fried with jumbo margaritas. 🌯🌮

My family and I used to often go to Chi-Chi's on the weekends. We LOVED it. My sister and I would often order chimichangas, and sip our Shirly Temples while we waited for our order. Then we would often have their deep-fried Mexican ice cream for dessert (something that we'd never heard of before going there; and couldn't get, anywhere else). The whole family loved their salsa. The "Chi-Chi's" salsa that you can buy at grocery stores today just isn't the same. Sigh.

I loved Chi Chi's. At college in Bloomington, Indiana, we would go for big margaritas and chips. It was fun. The food was good in our minds and it was the 1980s. I think we picked it as the destination for our birthdays. Not much is left from that time.

Hi all. How y'all are?!? I am an "Old-fart" of near 70. I lived in Mexico for a bit over seven years, so I really do know what GOOD food taste like that would have to be considered as MEXICAN FAIR. Anybody who likes and thinks TACO BELL is what is eaten in Mexico would be sadly disappointed, as it ain't even CLOSE to what Mexican food is all about. NO WAY is Taco Bell anywhere CLOSE to the delicious Mexican food I use to enjoy every day for a little over seven years. I live in Adams, MA, about 15 miles north of Pittsfield, MA. There are TWO true Mexican restaurants in the Pittsfield area, my fave being "Pancho's Mexican Restaurant" (the REAL DEAL!) and the second being "Tito's Mexican Grill", more of 'Tex-Mex', but extremely authentic; reminds me of the border town restaurants (Mexico/Texas) I have experienced. Come on up to my area if ya want and give me a shout and I'll buy you some REAL Mexican fair, ah gah-ron-tee.

I worked for ChiChi’s in college. The kind of place where the servers were having a much better time than the customers. “Welcome to Cheapees, may I take your order?” And “Lady, the wine comes in a box!”, were two of our favorite actual comments from the dining room.

I'm from Southern California but was stationed in North Dakota around 1980. When we'd go down to Fargo to shop at the mall, we always ate at the Chi-Chi's there. I thought the name was strange (it was also the name of the first topless bar to open in my predominantly hispanic home town), but since my wife, who grew up speaking Spanish, didn't react to it I didn't say anything. Besides, it had a nice family-friendly atmosphere. When my mother-in-law, who was from Mexico City, came to visit, we went to Fargo and for lunch at Chi-Chi's. After we separated to wash our hands and my suegra had a word with her daughter, my wife, visibly shocked, asked me, "Do you know what the name of this place means?" "Yes." "How do you know that?" "I grew up in Santa Ana." Turns out that when you learn a language from your parents, they don't teach you all the words. According to Wikipedia, the original restaurant used the founder's wife's Sonoran recipes. Her nickname was "Chi-Chi".

People didn't really care about authenticity, so long as the food was palatable. Chimichangas may not have had had anything to do with Mexican cuisine, but afterwards some actual Tex Mex restaurants have been making them. Their problem was that quality of the food careened downhill in the 90s, so people stopped eating there. I remember eating there in 1998 for the first time in several years because my fiancee got a coupon, and we were both amazed how far the chain had fallen. 😆 we were just thankful neither of us got sick. Most locations closed down soon after that and we weren't surprised.

We had one in Suffolk County on Long Island through the 80's. It was such a cool place when I was a kid. We found one many years later, I think the one in PA? It was a road trip, and we ended up stopping for nostalgia's sake because yes! LMAO.

Yeah and even if it did survive I can doubt this place can dodge COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, war and really a whole lot of troubles and also nut job people from PC and Karen crowds to deal with. The restaurant business is really rough and also we have inflation and strikes to worry about as well.

Reading these comments let’s me know that a lot of us had the same childhood experiences where on a regular basis we were all eating at Chi Chis and loving it. This is literally the only restaurant I miss. They had the best enchiladas and the fried ice cream was my all time favorite dessert and it was a place where I could play videos games while we waited forever for a table because they were so crowded.

I grew up on Chi-Chis in Duluth, MN in the late 80s-early 90s. We often went there on Sundays at lunchtime in the Fitgers building and there was almost always a 15-45 minute wait for a table. All the kids menus were printed on those stupid paper sombrero hats and there always seemed to be at least one birthday party present. Yeah, the food was trash, the ground beef chimichanga was a joke in retrospect, but this is classic nostalgia for me. Thanks for posting this.

I used to work at a Chi Chis in the early 80s. It was the cleanest kitchen I have ever worked in. The only microwave in use was to heat up the special beef for the Chimis. If any got caught dumping salsa from a from a table back into a the salsa tank, they would have been fired on the spot. Pretty sure that never happened.

Weird to think it was already dying when my family was taking us there in Indiana in the 90s. There's an abundance of more authentic Mexican restaurants in Indianapolis now, but I'm sure all of us would still enjoy ChiChi's about as often if it was still an option. Like Taco Bell, it's an adaptation of Mexican food for American palates. Sour cream still smothers everything on my plate if I can get it. Though on the other hand, I thought I didn't like guacamole for years because I'd only had theirs, which was either blandest bland or 80% jalapeno juice by volume depending on the day you went.

taco bell is nothing like authentic mexican food, it’s quite literally a joke. i would imagine that it would go the same for this franchise as well. There’s a holy GOD in Heaven, Who created you and I for His glory, but our sins have separated us from Him. the wages of sin is DEATH, but the FREE Gift of GOD is eternal life in CHRIST the LORD. in love, CHRIST died for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. repent, stop living in sin, and believe in the Gospel.
