Thank you for pointing out the issue most monster compendiums have. In my opinion, the majority of things written for 5e are done in a reference manual sort of way, rather than an instruction manual manner. This means the reader is expected to know and understand the material already. Which is...problematic.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I've been playing for over 40 years, so it's pretty hard to see things through the eyes of someone unfamiliar with the material.

I feel like the thing with legendary resistances is that the DM was never supposed to tell players that it used its legendary resistance. At least I never tell my players that that’s what the monster does. That way the monster seems genuinely intimidating rather than the DM is just giving you a swift kick to the nuts.

Good idea. I usually roll in the open, so my players usually know what I need to roll to make the save. So it wouldn't work at my table, but I do think it's a good idea.

The book looks pretty great. That said, I don't really follow some of your reasoning. I thought the whole point of having the books in the first place was so that you didn't necessarily have to memorize everything. As for implementing monsters that are right for a given location, I generally think of that as a normal part of prep work - a little forethought about what environments the PCs are likely to visit will allow one to mentally or physically earmark creatures that work. That said, there is no substitute for learning to improvise, and anyway, having to consult a book once in a great while isn't the end of the world.

All right, I think you convinced me. I didn't back it initially for two reasons. First, because I have no problem creating or modifying monsters on my own. Second, because most monster books I've seen go out of their way to use unusual mechanics, odd names, and other quirks to make their monsters different and, perhaps, memorable. However, those traits make the monsters difficult to remember and run at the table, as you mentioned. If Flee Mortals avoids that pitfall, I'm on board.

This actually did a good job of convincing me not to buy the book. I look to these sorts of books more for inspiration than I do for stats and abilities. I dont mean that in a nasty or negative way, you didnt do anything wrong. I am actually appreciative of the opinion you provided. INow I dont have to buy the book just to be disappointed with it just being monster re-writes. If I ever find it for sale somewhere it would be worth grabbing, it isnt worthless by any means, just not worth the heavy price books come in at nowadays.

I didn't mention it in the video, but a big part of the attraction of the book is that it's got new abilities for monsters we've been using since Fifth Edition came out. If you're new, I would probably recommend sticking with the Monster Manual. 👍

  • @jeromeace1282

One consideration that probably escapes you because of your experience, is that the monsters are actually layed out in a pretty useful manner. For the pre existing monsters, they're organized into factions, with war beasts and all built in to work as a seamless whole. And the original monsters that don't have that association (like the stone eating bug swarm) are instead tied to environments.

Problem is I think 5e just is not very good as a system or at least not at all what I want from an RPG, so even the best 5e products (that are not done by WOTC) still won't do the trick. I think we should stop fixing 5e with 3rd party products and just start using better systems.

Been playing Fantasy Hero since 1999 when I switch from 1st and 2nd edition AD&D. Every player I introduced it to loves it. A wonderful skill-based system with no levels or hit points that rise too high to be believable even in a fantasy game. I tried 5th edition and....well.....no. Did not care for it. TSR D&D is still highly playable and easy to learn, and is by no means obsolete. Left 5e after discovering TSR D&D. I can see why TSR era editions are what made D&D amazing, not WOTCs editions. They should have stuck with card games. I'll have to check out Fantasy Hero.
