The Real Reason Led Zeppelin Won't Reunite Ever Again

Ойын-сауық

From 1968 to 1980, the hard rock band Led Zeppelin didn’t just create great music, but they told stories of mystical worlds and different times through their lyrics and distinct sound. They are arguably one of the greatest rock bands in history and have been highly influential in pioneering new styles and sounds not only in rock and roll, but across musical genres.
The band sadly disbanded after the death of their drummer, John Bonham. Since then, the surviving members have only sporadically collaborated and participated in one-off reunions. Why haven’t they ever got back together? This is the real reason Led Zeppelin won’t reunite ever again.

I will completely agree with you on the topic of Plants voice. I am and always will be a complete Zeppelin fanatic. I can't remember when Zeppelin wasn't in my repertoire, I probably was listening to them while still in diapers. (And will be listening to them when I'm back in diapers) now that's funny! But I idolized Plant, the most iconic front man in Rock. And in the period of the Led Zeppelin years his voice was 2nd to none. His raw projection his power and range were what separates good Rock bands to specular Rock bands. In my opinion Zeppelin was even bigger than that, the Super Group title started with them. But you can notice the decline in his voice just by listening to Zeppelin 1 and in through the out door. And his solo projects were good but nothing like the voice in 69 . But it comes to reason, figure living the life of a Rock star. Indulgence would almost be mandatory and excessive a norm. I'm sure he has settled down some from the past but even smoking for 50+ years is bound to take its toll on a voice. Then add in the 280 showed a year screaming into a mic, would do (not could do) irreparable damage. And to be completely honest, I just about can't handle him singing anything anymore. Maybe my expectations are too high but sometimes it's like nails on a chalk board. Long Live Led . As a side note. Plant surprised the hell out of me when they played "For Your Life " at the Kennedy Space Center. I thought he did fantastic.

As a Unit they said, quoting Page- "It's Not About Money, It's never been about Money - It is and always has been about the music". He of course had already said that the Band was a Whole - and when Bonham died, 25% of the Band was gone - You can't go on with 75% of the Band no matter how good of a drummer you find to put back there - it would never be the same.

Kevin Stailey-There have been numerous bands who've continued without a quitting band member or a band member who's no longer alive. AC/DC is a perfect example of such incredible success after losing their lead singer. Their album, Back In Black, sold 50 million copies worldwide WITHOUT Bon Scott who was the original lead singer. They didn't just call it quits. While John Bonham was an incredible drummer, he most certainly was replaceable. He contributed to Led Zeppelin's sound, but not to their songwriting.

true, however, Robert knows he/his voice cannot hold up for a tour of Zep songs. He's also got the luxury of knowing he's got a large NEW audience bc of his affiliations w/ Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin and the band(s) he's used lead by T Bone Burnett. I also believe somewhere deep down he's a bit embarrassed by his Zep days, for whatever reasons?

I agree with Dave Ferris. It wasn’t just a means to make millions for them. They all loved to create music and the relationship they all had on stage together can never be recreated with another drummer. They all loved each other but Robert and John had a very special relationship and I think Robert held John even closer after Robert’s son died. John was the only one from the band to be at Robert’s side through everything and be at Karac’s funeral. I don’t know if it’s true, but I read that the Zeppelin days remind Robert of his son’s death as well.

I dont know R Plant personally, so Im just speculating here. But the big downside to having the singing style he had when he was 20 is pretty much impossible to duplicate by the time your 70. I dont care who you are. And even though true blue Zep fans would love to see them back together, how long would it be before people complained about him not sounding like he used to? And younger fans who show up expecting to hear the bluezy howling from their old records wpuld be very disappointed. Their music will always be around for us to enjoy. The dude sings songs now that are in his present vocal range, not what it was 50 years ago. Just my 2 cents. Rock on people!!!!

Why can't we just be satisfied with what we've got? I mean, I LOVE Led Zeppelin. Their music is a living entity in my life, and the lives of countless others. They gave us a wide spectrum of music, and many live performances between 1969 and 1980, and then again later as either solo acts or with other musicians. Their reunion in 2007 ("Celebration Day") was a masterful end cap, revisiting Led Zeppelin one more time, and doing it magnificently. 1968 to 2007 spans 39 years. Now it's 11 more years after that. Plant will be 70 in August 2018. Jimmy and John are already there plus. These men gave us some of the most memorable music and performances of the modern era. We're a bunch of greedy assholes to badger them for more. As solo artists and with other musicians, they CONTINUE to give us incredible music AND live performances, even at this stage in their lives. I for one will simply say "thank you" to all of them, it's been one hell of a ride. Someday they will be gone, and so will we. The music, however, will ramble on.

The reason why Zeppelin will never reunite apart from one-off events is that Bonzo was Roberts best friend and his loss was so deeply felt by him.

Like Robert said , Led Zeppelin was a four piece band , and John was part of those four. And though the 2007 concert with Jason was a success , and both Jimmy and John Paul felt good about continuing, Robert was firm in his feelings that It's not the same and never will be to him, without his buddy John. And the truth today is that the way the media is , one slip up and the name Zeppelin would be driven through the mud until everyone, including the fans, were sick of hearing it. There's no doubt they were the best, and though everyone one of us that love Zeppelin dreams of them being on stage again, we need to face the facts. That these guys are NOT in their prime anymore, so just listen to what they gave us. And for those that there when it began, be thankful you in some way were part of it.

I became a drummer because of John Bonham, and when he passed away in 1980, I was just throttled over it. he was and still is my hero. I'm glad I'm old enough to have been alive when he was playing with Zeppelin, being born in 1967 myself. One of my first rock albums was Led Zeppelin's debut album, and I still have everything they released - on original vinyl, that you couldn't pay me enough to ever consider selling. God rest John Bonham and Led Zeppelin. Let sleeping dogs lie, but celebrate their music and their unmatched legacy.

Because they're 70 years old, is why. People can still do lots of things 100% up to par when they're 70, but rock star generally isn't one of them. It's such a draining job, even 20-year-olds get exhausted doing it. Its reputation for drugs and booze isn't just a result of rock culture, its because they use that stuff to cope with the demands of performing. Now, many musicians perform for longer. Leonard Cohen practically had a second career in his 70s, touring extensively and performing his last concert at 79. Chuck Berry never stopped until he died at 90, 20 years older than Page & Plant are and his career so long that most people alive didn't know he was one of the reasons rock even exists! But their style is different, not dependent on their voice or the vigour of their performance like rock is.

That was an amazing video. My being a massive Led Zepplin fan from the 80s, you said what I thought silently in my head. Bonham just can't be replaced. It isn't about skill drumming. It's about John Bonham. Led Zepplin was the magic of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Jon Paul Jones, and John Bonham together. I liked your last sentence. "Without him, there simply is no Led Zepplin." That's what made Led Zepplin who they are. With that move, they proved to everyone that they weren't just money grabbing musicians. That proves real class during a time when class is not very easy to find.

When Bonham died so did Led Zeppelin. 2007 did not change that. It doesn't mean that fans can't fantasize about the possibility of a repeat show like 2007 though, but it is not the same. There is no Boston without Brad. No Beatles without John. Nothing wrong with the surviving members playing and folks loving it -- but the fact remains it's simply not the same. I can respect Plant, Page and Jones not being interested. They lived it, and it is their void where Zeppelin without Bonham is concerned -- far more than it is ours without them as Led Zeppelin.

Plant felt (and maybe still feels) incredibly guilty because while he was away touring in the 70s he lost his little boy to illness and after that he didnt want to continue with the band. John Bonham was the only person that was able to convince him to continue (perhaps because those two had been playing together before they met Page and Jones and were closest, who knows) and then not too long afterwards Bonham himself died. So I think he always believed that the band wasn’t meant to continue after that.

In my mind, yearning for a LZ reunion tour has a LOT to do with a deep desire to go back to those magical moments in the late 60's-70's driving around out on the back country roads with friends and twistin up a doobie, drinking beer, fucking in the backseat, ALL to that unbelievable wall of raw Zeppelin Black Magic......"Hey Hey Mama say the way move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove"! My friend sings a majority of the song. And I sing the higher parts at the end after the solo. There are times it can be hard to hit those notes with power and hold them. lol We just did it this past weekend and everybody there enjoyed it. I love to sing and I play guitar as well. And Led Zeppelin especially Robert Plant are one of my biggest influences. Only one that is a bigger influence is the band Rush. Which the are my absolute favorite band of all time.

To me it killed the dynamics of the song and a lot of those songs they dropped from the set list altogether. Shame cause it sounds fantastic on record. In 77 he could not do it

Hey, I know, why not just stick to the bands statement: "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were." and leave it at that. Of course every member has moved on to doing other things; but that statement is as true today as it was on the 4th of December 1980. We should be grateful we had the chance to hear a band so tight, that losing one, would always mean we lost them all. You can count those bands on three fingers. I just assumed three, I don't know who the other two would be?

Led Zeppelin was that ultimate band they lost the heart and soul of the band when John passed away and Robert held true to the fact that it would never be the same without him and just leave it at that! Led zeppelin is no longer will never be again all good and great things have to come to an end and it did unfortunately too soon and I respect Robert Plant for his decision for holding true to the love of one of his best friends. Robert is a true friend!

There has been, nor will there ever be another Led Zeppelin. The 2007 O2 arena was the last we will even hear from Zeppelin, and that is as it should be. The greatest rock band of all time (plus Jason) did their due diligence that night in honor of the man who first gave them their start. (Ahmet Ertegun). It was 2 hours of pure rock perfection. From the masters of rock, no less.

I have always been annoyed with The Who for going on with Keith Moon. Whenever I listen to, for example, "Who's Next," you can't not notice how brilliant the drumming is. The last minute and a half of "Bargain" is incredible. Give it a listen some time.

I for one have much respect for Led Zep.. it was the FOUR of them together as musicians that gave us fans all they had.. unlike umm Fleetwood Mac just coming off a tour that was rather sad without Lindsey.. being ‘fired’ as per Stevie’s demands.. Thank you to Led Zeppelin for not ending that way.. RIP John 💔

The reasons are simple......Robert Plant does not want to do an oldies tour........AND......his voice cannot do these songs consistently. Enjoy the time he spent with Page in the 1990's. That was your reunion.

It was definitely a bucket list moment for everyone in the audience. What was bizarre is what happened after he was done. It was like the third encore we held him for and after Stairway when the house lights came up everyone just got up and silently filed out of the stadium. No one applauded, cheered, nothing. It was like that was that and it was time to go. At that point there was nothing else to add to it. The most masterful display of crowd control in history. Jimmy was always into his black magic. he put a spell on that crowd that night too.

Plant said well when he spoke about not being in a band that toured around the world giving the fans what they thought they wanted to make them happy. He's an artist and needs to move ahead not sit on his laurels dreaming about the past. I agree with him we must push forwards. After all Led Zeppelin is a hard act to follow.

There never was going to a led Zeppelin reunion expect for a few very special one off gigs such as live aid and two further concerts related to Atlantic records. There are only 8 real Zeppelin records the last being released in 1979, when the band members were still in ether early 30s. So unlike other bands Zeppelin never got old and boring and have never turned out dull or dated music which is why 40 years on from their final album they are still held in such high esteem.
