The Real Reason Boston Market Is Disappearing Across The Country

There was a time when casual dining restaurants were extremely popular in America, but most of the restaurants that were popular in the ‘90s and early 2000s seem to be disappearing quite rapidly today. Among them is Boston Market, the restaurant that tried to give you home cooking without the hassle. They were once well-known for their rotisserie chicken, but it became so popular that grocery stores started selling it as well. In addition, they just haven’t changed enough over the years to stay relevant. Let’s take a look at the real reason why Boston Market is disappearing across the country.

There is always a place for old fashioned, especially when it’s become a rarity. Some of us want this kind of food regularly, and not only on holidays. I’ve learned to cook the best of it at home, but not everyone has the time to do that 7 days a week.

Most of these points in the video are valid, though the part about how we're craving Korean and Persian food left me unconvinced. I think the biggest factor is obsessive corporate greed, like so many restaurant chains and businesses in general. My family like the chicken, the green beans, the macaroni and cheese and the mashed potatoes with gravy, but the employees quite often get the order wrong, even with their computer screens spelling it out. And with just one line you sometimes have to wait and wait. Just recently this year in our local Boston Market they changed from round plastic plates to square ones and I think that's a corporate decision to cut the size of the side order portions. So you're getting something more like a snack than a satisfying meal, but the price stays high. This is a mistake because hard working and underpaid customers (most of us) will increasingly get their chicken at supermarkets, fix more meals at home or start using coupons at Burger King in order to feed their families.

Also late last year I got a chicken pot pie that had absolutely no chicken in it. What the fuck!! Last years Thanksgiving turkey dinner was so awful with way too much salt on/in everything! Their chicken is also very dry, never juicy. EEEW!!

  • @Juichi

Yes, the quality has gone downhill. The chicken has gotten smaller and drier. They don't always put enough sauce on the chicken. They got rid of or changed the sauce they used to have for the meatloaf. The last time I went to a Boston Market it was miserable. It took forever and seemed like they were having issues. I will still go there, but since there's not one close I'm less inclined to make the trip now.

i agree with you there. I never read or hear about the massive quality hit this chain suffered in the mid 90s. I remember in 94 when they came to the nyc area how great their chicken was and their mashed potatoes were insane. What they have been serving for at least the last 10 or 15 years tastes nothing like. The flavor of the chicken back then was perfect.. now as you say it is dry and oddly flavorless. I didn't realize McDonald's owned this company for 10 years that explains a lot. But this chain went downhill big time.

Here are the REAL reasons Boston Market has tanked: 1) they replaced the delicious original homemade gravy with cheap commercial gravy; 2) they eliminated mushrooms from their delicious stuffing and instead offered what tastes like bland Stove Top Stuffing "because not everyone likes mushrooms, especially children"; 3) they had people in lines out the door waiting to buy the sauteed spinach they offered only for a limited time for a couple of years, but decided to axe it permanently after "corporate crunched the numbers" and apparently felt it wasn't profitable enough, although another excuse I was told is that "it takes too long to make"; 4) they started serving pink, tough, undercooked chicken, and I began to notice that I got sick after eating there; 5) their staff was no longer friendly; 6) they became too expensive at almost $10 for a fast food meal; 7) the water in their machines had a funny taste; 8) they took affordable, delicious, home-cooked food and turned it into expensive, bland, commercial garbage; 9) Boston Market was now Boston Market in name only, and nothing like what it was many years ago; 10) customers got disgusted with #9 and stopped visiting Boston Market.

_Boston Market_ was everything in the mid 90's. They had these lil' cake slices called _Mocha Mocha._ Oh, they were so good that you'd cry. Man, I miss those things. The lil' strawberry cake slices and chocolate cakes slices were coo', but that mocha one was everything. I _like-ted_ the lil' meatloaf dinner w/ the sweet sauce. It's been years so I don't remember what it's called, but it was hella good. I was simple. Just give me that w/ sides of mac & cheese and mashed potatoes and it's all good. Oh, and they sandwiches were good too.

I guess I choose to believe that Boston Market suffers from Bad management. Back in the 1990s I was a single guy, and I could always get a healthier meal from there than any other fast-food joint. They had a real niche in the market. But I agree with other commenters. Even though the menu was wonderful and reasonably healthy compared to the competition, the stores were always dirty, the employees didn't seem to be the best, and food quality was wildly different from store to store and time-to-time. If they were around and they will run as well as say Chick-fil-A, I would eat there all the time. Even a good product in a good spot in the market will be ruined if you suffer from Bad management

Oh man, Boston Market. I remember when they were Boston Chicken, my mom would let us order from there more often than pizza or KFC because roast chicken was healthy. This was back when it was all about fat grams instead of watching out for things like salt, and Boston Market's food is pretty salty. (Their mac and cheese is still fucking delicious, though.)

Plain and simple, quality and service used to be great, then they thought they could get away with lowering quality and no longer provide excellent service. Everything is now served Luke warm. The market will tell you when you are no longer worth the cost. The problem has resolved itself, the chain is done

Well, here in Florida everybody knows you don’t eat at Boston Market because it gives you the runs. I haven’t eaten at one since around 2005, right when they changed the cornbread recipe, and frankly I didn’t even know they were still around what with all the food poisoning issues.

I worked there and the ONLY thing cooked fresh is the chicken. All the sides come pre-cooked in plastic bags which we used to put in hot water bath warmers to heat up lol. And the chicken pies are made from day old cooked chicken that went unused the previous night. And never ever get the meatloaf or turkey, in the year i worked there I never figured out how or where they were cooked. A slab of each is always kept warm all day long and whenever someone ordered it we'd just slice some off and return it in the warmer. At the end of the night we'd just wrap it up and place it in the walk-in cooler for the next day or for sandwitches.

All these comments are correct. Place suxxx now compared to when i would go back in 2005 era. Tried signing up to get the reward of two free deserts, and the website wouldn't allow me to use them and the meals are REALLY overpriced for the size you get. You'd have to buy two meals to be full and that would total around $30 just for something decent. Better off getting some microwave meals and saving like 80%

Seriously.. not diverse enough in cultural taste? I’d like to see the market research that shows that. If you’re looking for a specific style of food, there’s a restaurant / quick service that serves that near by. You don’t see McDonald’s incorporating Asian cuisine with their menu. Total BS
