The Real Problem With Social Media
Episode: South Park - The Hobbit
*The footage and images featured in the video were for critical review and education which are protected under the Fair Use laws of the United States Copyright act of 1976.
Inspired by the Love of Jesus Christ
Verse of the Day (as related to the topic of this video):
"We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past." - Romans 3:22-25 (NLT)
A movie I highly recommend: The Gospel According to Matthew (starring a very animated and engaging acting performance by Bruce Marchiano, who plays Jesus). This is a word-for-word adaptation that has a unique take on the body language and charisma of Jesus, and also makes it easier to understand and quicker to read the story. I am hopeful that this movie gives you peace, love, hope, security, comfort, and answers, as it did me, and continues to do to this day. God bless you.

Ideally... it is not ok to be fake, but I do understand why people do it and I have even been guilty of being kind of fake at times. However, simply wearing make up, dressing in a way that makes you happy and all that is not being fake. That is self expression. Moreover, authenticity is also unique to each person and like you said, self love means taking care of oneself.

I think you're missing one of Wendy's biggest points. She wasn't upset that Kim Kardatian alters her looks to express herself, shes upset becuase it makes other girls feel horrible about themselves. She was mad at Butters for wanting the impossible woman, he was setting girls a ridiculous standard and wouldn't settle for anything less. She wasn't being judgmental, she was pointing out people's flaws to show that nobody is perfect and its wrong for trying to be perfect. And it makes he episode's ending all the more heartbreaking when she gave in to the very thing she was fighting against.

Most people have more than enough problems of their own without having the luxury of pointing out others' problems or imagining that they should dictate to others what their own standards should be. Wendy is a monster and reminds us all of the universally despised "Nice Guy" who demands that women value exactly what he values in himself (his alleged niceness) instead of having the minimal human decency to respect the prerogative of other people.

@@compout2 I think the easiest way for people to understand this episode is to recognize that Wendy is simply playing the role of reality. Hell they even made up the character "Reality" in the episode Safe Space, and similarly he was ignored and then hung. I wouldn't be surprised if Wendy was originally considered to play that role. I don't think she did anything wrong this episode; people just weren't willing to listen to reality and instead of accepting imperfections they tried covering them up with photoshop. She may have been a bit brash about it but that's reality. And in true South Park fashion this was taken to hyperbole with even the boys getting carried away with false self images to the point where social media seemed to be their new reality. In the end I see the message as being it's easy to create a false self image, and it may make you feel better for a time. But it's not healthy for you or society as a whole. Reality will catch up to you and you'll find that had you simply accepted yourself for who you really are and worked on your actual self then you likely would have been much better off in the long run. Instead people would rather gaslight anybody posing a challenge to their self image quick fix. It's a lot like an addiction which is made even clearer when looking at celebrities who have constant plastic surgeries.

I feel that completely altering yourself can be very harmful and create false unachievable beauty standards especially when it’s someone who has a lot of influence with a younger audience who cannot tell that it’s not real. It creates a narrative that this is how you’re supposed to look and these younger people become insecure when they can’t achieve it. It’s very different than wearing makeup jewelry or clothes in my opinion because like you said that is artistic expression while altering your entire appearance and presenting it as truth is the reason why so many kids and teens have self confidence issues.

@@thomas.thomas I don’t think makeup is harmful by itself, I think it’s the intention. If you’re always wearing makeup claiming this is how you look when you wake up, that can create a false perception. But there’s nothing wrong with changing how you look, with makeup or otherwise. It’s when people start to excessively promote that unachievable look as naturally achievable with dumb things like lotions, or fake weight loss ads, exfoliating, *water.* Let’s be real, a lot of what we see in Hollywood/models isn’t real, but it’s marketed as real. It’s botox, it’s starvation, it’s makeup, it’s fat reduction, it’s implant, it’s injections, etc, but of course they don’t talk about it. I think if I had just known that at 14yr, it wouldn’t have had nearly as much of an impact. Not to mention makeup is..visible, if you’ve worn makeup or know someone that does, you can tell when someone is wearing makeup. Plastic surgery isn’t as noticeable, and can pass as natural.

I think you're missing a significant part of the message and theme of this episode. I think it's important to remember that none of the south park girls besides lisa have self-confidence issues when the episode begins. The problems begin when the idea of photoshop and altering your appearance to create an impossible version of yourself is introduced to the girls. The rest of the girls don't decide to start using photoshop because they want to, they start because they feel as they have no other option if they ever want attention from the boys again as they could never be able to reach the level of perfection that a photoshop image provides and this is what causes their self-confidence issues. And the show makes it clear that these unachievable beauty standards come from celebrities like the Kardashians who use photoshop to sell an image of themselves to promote products. The issue is not with wendy and these girls self confidence but with the impossible beauty standards society puts on women.

You can edit your appearance but if you’re not careful, it can perpetuate a downward spiral for your self esteem. You have to get really clear with yourself on how it makes you feel and why you’re doing it. It can absolutely be a form of self-expression if you authenticity want to express in that way and it feels healthy and good for you - otherwise, if it’s making you miserable, it’s closer to oppression by a society that pressures mainly women into feeling like their worth is based on their looks. It’s really personal. Nobody can tell (except you) if it feels healthy or forced. When you love yourself you are better able to make decisions that make you happy despite pressure or misunderstanding from society or other people.

That's why depression from social media is a thing. Just my two cents. I personally only use social media for my hobbies, my personal life is not on the internet like everyone's else. People are baffled by it but I don't care.

I used to hate my acne/acne scars, and spent way too long putting layers of makeup on to try to hide it, to no avail, and then one day I realized, why do I envy my friend's freckles, or admire the striped pattern of a tiger's fur, but hate the constellation of marks on my own unique face? It might sound cheesy, but that changed my perspective entirely. Our obsession with poreless plastic skin is a little weird if you really think about it.

For someone like me, someone who's unable to go out into the world and meet with others; Facebook is the best (most appropriate) way to socialize with others. Of course, I only use it once or twice a day and don't quite get as "sucked into it" as some others would. When I say Facebook helps me socialize because I can't go out and meet people, I'm not JUST referring to the Pandemic issue. Since I was little, I've lived with a neurological disorder called Congenital Hydrocephalus. While MINE isn't quite as severe or life-threatening as others, Hydro has left me with some flaws. I can't see out of my right eye, I've had several operations since I was two weeks old (my sixth one happening back in 2018) and I have a slight impairment in my motor skills. Because of this, I can't drive or operate certain machinery like others can. With all this in mind, Social Media is my best way to socialize with others

It’s no ok to be fake, but having stuff like make up or whatever doesn’t make you fake if you love yourself. Oversimplifying the scenario, it is ok to express yourself however you want, because it’s good to be different and to live in a diverse world, however the most important part is that you love yourself, and that you don’t see social media as a way to get validation on how you look or express yourself, because you are in denial about how you feel inside, AND don’t love yourself, if you do that then that is being ‘fake’

In the time where you're going to climb the achievement (getting a perfect boys / having a golden days) to reveal your true identity, that all might be fake as well (or temporary). Photoshop is making people in a way insecure about themselves but as you said unless it makes them feel good about themselves there's nothing wrong. Unfortunately being the 2-dimensional universe of South Park where I don't feel bad for saying every adult is a dead brained idiot, her message couldn't go through. _Damn. • @squarepickle

Wendy never actually changed her outlooks. She said "stop being mean to people about their looks" then she said, "stop lying about your looks if you don't want people to be mean to you". Both are consistent statements and not hypocritical at all, because they don't contradict each other. There's nothing artistic about catfishing. If you want to be artistic that's one thing, if you make it your profile picture and try to pass it off as "you" and let people complement you for a fake image you are clearly being dishonest about, then you're not being artistic your being dishonest. Wendy is pretty consistent on both points.

i 100% agree and genuinely felt like he missed the mark completely on this one. Like the photoshoping in the episode is not about "expression" its just the girls trying to make themselves look more beautiful then they are and thus create a feedback loop with even more and more unrealistic expectations being put on them. Not quite sure why he just focused so much on Wendy rather than the problem the show was actually trying to comment on.

"Wendy is right about this though: People should love themselves as they currently are in real life. But this isn't to be confused with refusing to work on oneself." Acceptance is an important concept in the 3rd wave of cognitive-behavioral therapy (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Metacognitive Therapy). This concept is often misunderstood and equivocated to submission. Acceptance, in practice, is often just a moment in time where you take a step back and discern what is real from what isn't. It's that "reality check" that we all need more often than we'd like to admit. From then and there we can decide what it is we are going to do with the parts of this reality that we can influence. The thing we probably neglect (non-acceptance) the most is the whole baggage behind some of our negative emotions. We often have an urge to quell these "bad" emotions ASAP, reaching for the easiest sources of relief. We often neglect to address the actual chain of events that lead up to the experience. We refuse to accept how difficult this long-term solution may be; that there is no "easy" way forward; that the way out of our personal hell is often _through_ that hell itself. I'm glad you are encouraging us to that Mirror exercise @Made2Express. For a lot of people, including myself, that is one step in the right direction. Forcing ourselves to face our insecurities (in good faith and a safe environment of course) really challenges us to develop cognitive coping mechanisms: self-compassion, loving-kindness, and such. Personally, I like to hug myself and whisper kind words as if I was consoling a vulnerable child. Kristin Neff's 5-minute compassion break is very helpful as well. self-compassion.org/category/exercises/

Yes, ofc, i have a lot of self loathe. But projecting it onto others doesn't make my problems disappear. He is right, y’all! Nobody should be ashamed of themselves just because the society and people wanted you to be “the perfect person”. Hell, nobody is perfect in this world but at least we have emotions, we have friends who cared about us, love and support our families! If one day, one of us has make-up on and we take a look at our mirrors, we say to ourselves “did I make a good choice? Is this the right thing to do? Was it all worth it in the end? Why the hell do I need to be popular just a be with some spoiled friends when I already have some friends who cared and loved me for who I am?” This is one of the most rare topics that people seriously need to take a look at real hard before this world rots. God loved all of us for we are, not for what we are with the makeup. Excellent job, @Made2Express!
