This video praises Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, developed by Ninja Theory. However, the release of Hellblade was met with much misinformation, rushed reviews and a lack of quality control.
I hope you can help me spur up some good conversation in the comments section regarding why it's important to treat video game reviews with better respect. And, of course, why pre-release embargos are a very good thing.

*tl:dr?* I love Hellblade as a game. But jeez, can we get some quality control with video game reviews these days? This video discusses the problems that arose with Hellblade due to its day-1 launch embargo, the bounty of misinformation that was flooding KZread, and the problems associated with rushed Hellblade reviews.

The viking enemies are real and she's actually fighting them. She simply perceives them as demonic and hellish due to her condition (based on past trauma). I am so glad they clarified that lol. There's something kinda distasteful about it literally being her tripping out by herself fighting imaginary battles. Especially since she's covered in cuts at the end

Wait, so the problem with the game is that they didn't release an early copy to reviewers to review beforehand, and so reviewers rushed their own work and produced half-assed results? I'm sorry, what the actual fuck? How is that a problem with the game or its developers if professional critics weren't professional with their work? Sure, a game-breaking bug like the one you mentioned probably should have been caught early on by the devs, I'll give you that much. It definitely needs a patch to fix it. But other than that, what exactly is wrong with the game itself? What you describe here is not a problem with the game, but rather with professionals not acting that way, but just trying to be the first to get a review out.

Yeah, I get it, they are supposed to help get the games sold to more people, because they can see ingame footage, but on the other hand if a game's marketing campaign and trailers aswell as ingame footage from the publishers themselves won't sell the game to me, some dude who got a free copy won't sell it to me either.

I wanna talk about this game, this seems like a good place to say something My expectations of the game was way off, these are the guys that did DmC and Heavenly Sword let's not forget. It was mostly due to the latter that I expected a hack and slash, Heavenly Sword, Hellblade you see where I am going with this. So I was surprised with what the game was, but it was very enjoyable. The story is amazing, at its essence it is someone struggling to get over the death of a loved one, but add in the mental illness and this game took that common story to a whole other level. This world and story she creates thinking she could free the soul of Drillion. Without spoiling the end, it all tied in well at the end of the story and that final fight was perfect, I wanted more but in hindsight it was absolutely perfect. The puzzles in the game are awesome and echo the whole mental illness aspect of the story, they are confusing. And that is what makes them awesome, they are not that challenging, they are not frustrating, they are confusing (remember our protagonist has a mental illness) Sound design, oh where do I start. The voices in MY head kept nattering away. She's lost, no we are not, go back, we don't know where to go, what's that?, look behind you, hahahaha, where do we go, no not there, you are going to die here, yes we are, go though the door, we have to go back and on and on and on, coming from every direction, constantly going on and on they where both useful and frightening, they took over the job of a HUD, a map, mission markers, enemy attack prompts etc and they where in MY head. I can't stress that enough, if you played the game with headphones you know what I mean when I say my head Combat is what I expected from the game as explained before, and yet the combat system felt rewarding and cinematic. Countering one opponent so you could hit him, finishing him off using your focus to quickly run towards another enemy knee him in the face, slice him up, hear a voice say "behind you" dodge another voice says "focus" so you stop time and finish him. It didn't have Devil May Cry level of depth to combat, but what it did have felt just as rewarding as a complex Devil May Cry combo TL;DR - Great story, good combat, amazing sound, puzzles felt relavent. Oh and the theme of the mental illness falls into all of the above, yes even combat

Headphones are great for this game. I used my surround sound and it disturbed my neighbors a bit. I jumped a lot and actually felt like I was her which is great immersion. In fact the only other game to immerse me like that was The Evil Within. Grizzly atmosphere, with bleak underpinnings allowed my senses to be temporarily tricked at times in believing I was actually in purgatory/hell facing these forces of mayhem. Looking forward to the second one.

I agree the problem is more with the attitude of reviewers. Even with a embargo everybody had exactly the same chance to do a proper review and release it on time. If the game was released to content creators 2 weeks earlier: so what? still there would have been those who rush through. It is only unfortunate that a game gets bad press due to it, but again, the reviewers who rush their content are to blame, not the devs

People shouldn't get early review copies/codes. I can make an exception for big gaming magazines like Game Informer or something along those lines, but in this day and age way way way too many people are getting early copies of stuff and it feels less like it's so they can review it and more like they're part of some elite group who's opinion is worth more than the rest of us. I guess I'm probably overreacting but I don't think that early copies should be THAT important. The fact that so many fumbled and got things wrong, or didn't give themselves time to even take in the game to properly review it, shows how desperate certain people are just to be first. Not to get it right and give us an honest opinion, but just so that they can be one of the only voices on the subject. If this power was put in the hands of everyone (i.e. we all have the same release date) then we would truly know who wants to give us their honest opinion, and who just wants to be ahead of the line and/or gets salty that they didn't get special treatment this time. We should all collaborate, all say what we think of things, and within all of our own voices and opinions a clear picture will emerge, sure as shit.

They really should've marketed it much better. I've already seen way too many people jump into this game expecting some hack n slash action game. The title of the game doesn't help with that either. Not to mention when ever they showed off the game, the main thing they showed was the combat which misled a lot of people. I watched a streamer yesterday that bought the game expecting a DMC style action game. An hour later he shut the game off, said it was "fucking boring," and called it a walking sim. There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has their own opinions but it's things like this why I just wish they would've explained what the game was better. It's definitely not a game for everyone. Just my two cents. *Edit:* I want to make a correction by saying I was wrong about saying they mainly showed combat in the videos. Dev diaries explain it much better. I apologize for that mistake. However the point still stands that they should've done a better job marketing the game. Not everyone watches dev dairies. You can say that's their own fault for not doing research but the average gamer isn't gonna go through extensive research so they can get a game. They see the name "Hellblade," and watch a trailer and expect a action game. Can you really blame them? I hardly saw any ads for this game before release and the ones that were there don't really say "hey this isn't an action game btw." I understand that they don't have a huge budget but man I feel they could've done a much better job explaining the game through ads.

Last christmas I was shopping for gifts for my younger brothers and I came around Hellblade. I'd never heard of it despite it winning a ton of prestigious prizes and awards! I wasn't up to date with the gaming world but still... My brothers play Xbox and I play on the Switch... At home I watched some gameplay and I was blown away. I wanted to go back and buy the game but never did. Earlier this year Hellblade was announced for the Switch and I bought and downloaded it on release day. This game is just....perfect. I'm a huge Skyrim fan and Hellblade reminds me of Skyrim....an 8 hour long dungeon of Skyrim! I love Hellblade, I love the character, the gameplay, the story, the riddles (usually not a big fan of that) and it's also the first time that I noticed that a character is evolving and growing over the game. It's hard to explain but it feels like Senua really learns to handle her darkness and it's relatable.

One of the best games this year so far , really like the dark story , and I like how they balanced the game in term of combat , puzzles ,exploring and story. Please consider buying this game people , it just blows my mind how such small team ( about 20 developers ) with tight budget make a game this big.

They never promised a heavy combat game.

I pre-ordered on Playstation Store a few weeks ago. It downloaded. I played. There was one glitch that happened to me. I was in the castle with a torch. I avoiding going the route of where you have to go through water and swim beyond a small gate. I took an alternative route. Somewhere on the spiral steps I sudden fall down to the area I was going to. Somehow I and torch were unharmed. Lucky for me that was the only bug/glitch I experienced during my time playing the game. This game is just awesome and it took me by surprise how much I enjoyed it. I am not going to lie but the fighting wasn't my cup of tea but I got use to it. Dodging and blocking are your friends. Also being able to slowing down time...made the combat fun for me. I wish it was a bit longer but it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the game.

Jim Sterlings problem isnt a bug. Usually someone would have the common sense to relight a torch before moving onward. Reminds me of people who complain about not having enough ammo to use on a boss in a survival horror game because they used it all willy-nilly beforehand. Their fault, not the game's.

I've bought the game on my own accord. I haven't read the ratings or any review whatsoever. I just loved the trailer and I really into this kind of psychologic story driven games. I have played this game in exact 7.2. The only thing I am pretty dissapointed with was the ending. [SPOILER] I fought thousands of enemies respawning around "Hella" and I had this goddamn God killer sword only to realise I have to "let go and die" to reach the end. All this time you had overcome any thoughts of giving up on your BF and then what gets you is the moral of letting go of the dead? Man I had a God killer sword. I really wanted to force Hella or kill her! I just wished they added two endings for that moment.

Some might be disappointed that the game turned out to be different than they expected. But the good thing about how they showed only action sequences before release and did the embargo thing is that the game stayed a real surprise and not everything got spoiled by the internet, like it happens with every other game. I also don't have a problem with the fact that there's no perma death because I didn't know it. It had the desired effect on me as a player, although there was no perma death.

I ran into a bug myself on last night's stream. I was fighting the darkness (that big skin dog) and was killed due to a distraction. When the game loaded up again, I had no sword. I also learned one thing from the experience. And that is--that Senua can take a lot of damage. I was in there for a bit taking hits and dodging from the monster for so long that I thought it was part of the game. I finally gave up and reset the game and that is when my sword came back up.

This may be a little harsh but is youtubers who created this problem with embargos. You took it with grace because it benefited you from someone else getting a copy erlier than another youtuber, you guys did not want competition on the time when posting reviews, now developers are playing with this embargo who only benefits them. The embargo is an anti consumer idea, but you guys embraced it because it benefits you as a content creator

  • @ThePandafriend

    @ThePandafriend

    7 жыл бұрын

yakza5 I wouldn't say so. Embargos are very useful for everyone when done right. When done right the developers give the reviewers enough time and everyone can release the review at the same moment without sacrificing quality. But it's true that too often either the developers/publishers fuck up (like in this case) or they release a game with many known shippables and use the embargo to prevent bad pre-release press.

  • @MR3DDev

    @MR3DDev

    7 жыл бұрын

Yes, but you can't expect an industry that needs to make money to do it right. What do embargos do? (not in the case of Hellblade) they prevent the customer from getting the information before the game releases. This way we don't see the problem until we already payed money for the game. This is no longer an industry dedicated to make the best product, is an industry dedicated to make the most profit at the lowest cost possible (with some exceptions of course).

Also quality control with game reviews?, really?, you're going to assume you're the epitome of review perfection and before you say "no", take a look at other reviews first and look at your own. Also the game is far from perfect, so don't go trying to find reasons to label people as stupid or wrong for just not clicking with the game the way you do.

I love this game, even though I normally hate games that are somewhat like interactive movie (Which I can't say that's what this is because it really doesn't feel that way) but this game does it so damn well, once you get sucked in it doesn't let go, every step you take advances the story. There's no hallways that only serve as filler between cutscenes, it's all very fluid and natural. The sound design is the best I've experienced but it's also the only time I've enjoyed playing a game with headphones (which might be something I need to change and start doing it with other titles if it really makes that big of a difference like it does in Hellblade). The combat is fun and very personal, the puzzles at the beginning in the area full of illusions was the only time I didn't enjoy the puzzles and after that they were great, imo. What I like the most is what they done with Senua and just her as a person. I couldn't help but get emotional for her during alot of scenes, she's extremely vulnerable but at the same time extremely capable. She's one of my all time favorite fictional characters, definitely in my top 3 which says alot considering the game took only around 10h to beat on my first run. Ninja Theory has really outdone themselves and for me this has raised them up there with CD P-Red. I hope other Devs learn something from this, there's no substitute for a game that was made by people who actually give a fuck about what they're doing instead of only caring about the money(Looking at you SquareEnix, ya cunts).

Tweaking the .ini files to turn off motion blur and a few other ugly effects also annoyed me ;) I also respect that their making people more aware of mental health, but i just wish they could of done it in a more combat focus way. But everyone to their own , you'll either love or hate it.

Having motion blur in a PC game should result in the death penalty if you can't easily turn it off and it should NEVER be on by default on PC. The FoV in this game in the videos I've seen looks incredibly low like watching through a key hole. PC game/port sins.

I played through the majority of the game without knowing that there's block, heavy attack, and melee buttons, I just used light attack and dodge until I paused the game and realised that a bunch of controls were listed. I didn't think to try any of the other buttons during combat because I was worried about screwing up and dying. However, I still really REALLY enjoyed every bit of it, and once I knew about the other parts of combat, the game got 5x better from an already near perfect score in my eyes.

4:25 To beat up on Jim for a moment. There's nothing that stopped him from restarting his game. He has a Patreon that pays him about 5,000 a month. The rush to upload his review was his own choice. An autosave is not a bug. It saved automatically at a point where he could not back track. If you play Deus Ex 1 and invest all your points in swimming before the final boss and it autosaves to stop you from reallocating points, is that a bug?

Matthew Melange His *job* kinda doesn't give him that time. Also, Deus Ex lets you manually save as many files as you want, thats not even fucking close to the same example. Hey, remember Breath of the Wild only having one save file? Pretend it's only an autosave. Pretend you got stuck and couldn't get out of something. Are you gonna blame me for not wanting to restart the whole fucking game again? If I was trying to review it, I would never touch it again, because it can just decide to fuck me over when I DO catch up.

His job gives him as much time as he wants because he doesn't have a job. Patreons are just begging people for money. There's nothing wrong with it and if you feel any pressure that is strictly self imposed. If Jim had waited 2 days to post his review do you think his patrons would've withdrew their funding for him? If you refused to finish a review because you got saved in an unwinnable spot that's your choice, not the game developer's. Also about the Deus Ex point. It's less about that game and more about the concept of 'autosaves as bugs'. Yes it's unfair that it saved at a poor spot but calling it a bug is like losing a PVP match and claiming the other side was hacking.

Kevin Toombs Yes to beat up on someone usually means to beat up on them. Good job! Question 1. Yes. An autosave is not a bug. It may be poorly implemented but if it works, then it works and is not a bug. Do you always trust what "Google says"?

imo hellblade's just repetetive, puzles are boring, the game runs extremely well (i have a midspec pc and i ran the game in ultra just fine) and looks amazing but there are so many things wrong with it, you cant remap keys, you cant change the FOV so if you get motion sick from low FOV's tough luck. some may say it gets better the longer you play it but i say, im not going to play 6 boring hours to enjoy 2 afterwards.

I gave this game a chance and played for something like 3 hours but really it`s just a circle jerk, get to area, look for runes, go to next area look for more runs rinse and repeat. It got boring really fast and combat is somewhat lacking, you cant feel your weapon weigh and fights are very repetetive.

Unfortunately my friend PC gaming is going through a very decadence era with all of those story driven walking simulators, let's hope that the end of those experiments will come soon, but I doubt it cause all of those hipster retards who want to be "emotional" and "connected" and praising these "games" like god send and giving them a 9/10 or 10/10 after the second day of release...

I finished it a couple of days ago and never encountered any issues as I took my time wanting to experience Senua's journey at my own pace and tbh I'm glad I did. I've only looked at reviews since completing it, for the small budget it's been one of my favourite games this year and I rank it up there with Horizon Zero Dawn for a gripping story and incredible realised world. I hope it gives NT the financial success they deserve, I want to go on another journey with Senua so badly.

i watched the no commentary gameplay so i haven't played it yet myself. it's well depicted but i doubt it will win most of people because of that. Maybe it looks cool but people look for Experiencing Impossible-otherwordly challenges and situations in game while having abilities and power to fight back, don't just suffer the demention of the player they are controlling. think of the Malkavian in Vampire Bloodlines ... similar concept but there it is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Colm Murphy : if you have been following the development the psycosis experience it's the main focus of this game

The real problem? THE REAL PROBLEM? sorry mate but thats not even close to the "real" problem in hellblade. If you ask me the worst thing in the game is the constant search for runes. You barely walk 5 m and there's another door which is locked by another rune or more runes. For 75% of the game you do nothing but walking around looking for these damn runes. It totaly ruined the game for me. I know there are a lot of good things in the game like the presentation of the mental illness or the detailed hero etc. but still looking for runes non-stop is just too boring for me and im sure others feel the same way.

I knew people wouldnt like the puzzles, its really annoying. I think if it was just 1 level cool. Then the next level fix the visuals (like fix the bridge) then the next level go through the door to see a new way (like facing the illusion god). If they mixed it up along with new enemies it would have been better, this game was repetitive and drawn out.
