The REAL Origin Story of Higurashi! - Hanyuu's Backstory: The Ultimate Higurashi Timeline
Фильм және анимация
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni's (Higurashi: When They Cry) deity, Oyashiro-sama, that the villagers in Hinamizawa worship seems to have a long history. However, this history might go back much farther than anyone might have anticipated - maybe even out of this world. Join me today as we go through the backstory of our favorite creampuff enjoyer, Hanyuu Furude, and find out how she became the revered god she is in a forgotten arc known as Kotohogushi-hen.
Welcome to a brand new series called the "Ultimate Higurashi Timeline," where once a month I will be going through every arc in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni catalogue. Whether the arc belongs to a console, or manga, or visual novel, or its anime only; I will be going through ALL of them, and deciding if they are either canon or non-canon by putting them into one, coherent timeline. The purpose of this series is to finally end any and all misinformation for the series by making it all readily available.
Here is a link to the Higurashi abridge from Studio Weeb 07 that I mentioned in the video:

Higurashi Gou and Higurashi Sotsu probably connect to Umineko, but who in the fragments knows if it'll happen? Ryukishi07 is a smart man that tries to bring together the When They Cry series, with titles like Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, and Ciconia No Naku Koro Ni - but who knows if they all connect. Bess Sonozaki asks Should you watch Higurashi When They Cry, and personally I think that's a great idea. The openings for the series created by Asaka and Ayane are very enjoyable, especially Analogy for Higurashi Sotsu.
Higurashi Sotsu has some interesting reactions for the full episodes, and I really enjoyed seeing what happened with Rina. Although I promise Umineko isn't that long, and we will discover Who is Frederica Bernkastel.
I love you guys

Welcome to a brand new series called the "Ultimate Higurashi Timeline," where once a month I will be going through every arc in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni catalogue. The purpose of this series is to finally end any and all misinformation for the series by making it all readily available. I can't express how happy I am to finally have the first timeline video finished! If you're in the discord you likely heard me complain about this video a few times due to both PC errors and the research being a bit annoying (I'm not a big visual novel fan). So, because of these this one took a lot longer than expected to get done, but regardless of that I hope that you all enjoy the work put into it. In the timeline series, I plan to give back to the community as much as I can, starting with this months video I will have various shoutouts inside. This month's shoutout is being focused towards my friends at Studio Weeb 07, who made a phenomenal Higurashi abridge. Next month I will be shouting out a few artists in the community, so stay on the lookout for the next part of the timeline! Edit: I briefly, briefly mention at the end of the video Higurashi Mei: I just want to make it clear before people comment on it that I don’t think Mei is canon. Edit #2: Making this edit due to people who commenting that Kotoho isn't canon; you guys aren't watching the video. I discuss at the end how Kotoho calls itself out for being an interpretation on scriptures of the Furude, but despite this I still believe the events of this story mostly, if not all of it are canon. There is too much that soundly lays out all of the precursors for events later in the story like the Syndrome, possibly the Sea of Fragments, the looper sword and all of Hanyuu's behaviors.

Did you just try to tell the makers that made this story arc into an anime I mean the new higurashi series that had been different I really would love to see this in the anime or imanga someday you never know how it's going to turn out I know cuz I used to look at higurashi a long time ago when I was aware about this story I just wish I could have had with it sooner than later nevertheless this was a good story in a very good ending there is an alternate ending about this how about you talk about that later on I mean higurashi these alternate ending is pretty good it could have been in the anime and manga nevertheless this was really a good video I used to look at stuff like this on KZread a long time ago when I had my computer in this was great I still wish I could have had it more often every now and then in there I don't know if they're ever going to make a new season of higurashi but when there is the end it will always be a new beginning towards to a new story of horizon it's like they always say everyone deserves to have a happy life and everyone has a right to have a happy life and there are others that deserves to have the right to live a happy life the way they want to have everybody deserves to have a happy life sometimes that's what makes the story a better better place to be despite higurashi horror it does have happiness to it and a lot of good memories between horror and happiness enjoy and a lot of good times and believe me I wish I could look at it all over again on my same computer during that day and time and more ❤️✌️😊👍❤️

Yeah after watching his videos on Gou and Sostsu I think I'm going to pass on watching them. I really don't like the way they look animation wise too. It's nice to see how well the 2006 anime holds up over time.
What i love about higurashi is that it gives the viewer an opportunity to piece together the information themselves and interpret the reasons for previous question arcs trough a lot of different facets. The facts are there on what happened, but the reasoning and perspective can vary for different people as me and my friend had debated! It truly is an amazing series. Im kiiiiinda maybe slightly dissapointed that aliens had to be a part of the story here.. but i dont wana say that im dissapointed it was still very well done. For that reason, similarly to how i dont consider gou canon (it is, i just like to hold the original story on a pedestal haha..) to the original story i will look at it more like "lore" and its still incredibly amazing. Some stuff doesnt need to be explained for the purposes of the first 8 main chapters to make sense still. That to me is the perfect story. I have read the vn and manga a while ago. Actually, currently im rewatching the entire anime series and im on the 22nd episode of kai. I wana finish it but gota go sleep, im doing a favor for my friend tmrw 😅 (even though its practically today).
Awesome to see you back with more Higurashi, it’ll always be the series that has most impacted me and helped me change as a person. It makes me happy to see many others feel the same way!!

I started Higurashi for the bloody gore murders but I stayed because of how well written it is and how deep character arcs go
I literally only discovered Higurashi a couple days ago and knew very little about it other than the brutal killing scenes and timeline jumps. Not sure what I was expecting, but aliens being behind all of it was NOT
Kotohogushi is not canon, and Hanyuu's full backstory is still unknown. The arc wasn't written by Ryukishi and the chapter itself has a disclaimer at the end saying that Kotogushi is merely one interpretation of the legend and that the real history is still a mystery.

REALLY good stuff so far. Made me a subscriber. I'm a huge fan of the no Naku Koro ni series (after this I'd love to see your take on a Umineko timeline) and this is great.
My goodness genuinely looking forward to this series because yeah Higurashi is my fav series I might not know it all. But this seriously put a smile onto my face which is great actual job man. And yeah it's honestly peculiar that despite the whole run of the series in animation format (And in Manga format if I remember correctly) Hanyuu has been a mystery until that honestly masterful VN which talks about her past. Which is genuinely one of the top tier stories on Higurashi itself, with that in mind if they honestly wanna bring back Higurashi back on its track they literally have two ways. One is to Ret-con Gou and Sotsu and actually make a genuine Polish one (And yes I know the manga Sotsu is actually different and not actually named Sotsu but Meguri, But even that has its problems within itself which is don't get me wrong it's far more superior than Sotsu will ever be. But still doesn't change the fact that it has some glaring issues that Sotsu carried on from some parts). Or Two actually make a Spin-off of this specific story about Hanyuu and the Village itself which is honestly probably be a massive win for the most part especially for fans of Hanyuu. (or the series itself literally a win win) And I love how Hanyuu is both an Alien and Technically a God because on some theories some of the Gods are said to be ancient aliens so I think you get the point I'm trying to say here in which despite Hanyuu being Canonically Alien she's still a Goddess to as well Both in well you get the point. Like seriously I don't have a lot to contribute on this and my thoughts are all over the place but again. Keep up the great work, Do it at your own pace and Of course have fun while doing so. Seriously despite the long gap of videos it's still okay because your effort is paying off.

Love this Higurashi timeline video - all the events/story is explained so well and is very interesting to follow along with. I think your editing style is really good and never makes me feel like the video is dragging. Higurashi was one of the first anime I watched and many many many anime later Ive come to realize that it still is one of the best mystery/horror stories ever made. I started reading Umeniko because of you and Im absolutely loving it - seeing this video is sick because I’m hoping that eventually I’ll finish Umeniko (THE VN IS SO GODDAMN LONG) and by that time there’ll be some sort of theory on how Higurashi and Umeniko crossover…dont know how, but in my head it sounds dope. but anyways, keep it up bro I will always support your channel and your endeavors in the content creation space. as someone who’s a creative by profession, I understand and appreciate your struggle to always put out your best.
Thank you for this! I've been wanting to know more about this arc but adding ANOTHER 10+ hour VN to my list of things is a bit much. I planned on taking what we know of this story and modifying it a bit for a project I'm working on, so knowing that there's inter-dimensional travel, aliens, otherworldy technologies and such will help me craft an *actual* mystery.

Note that Higurashi Mei has Rika reading a scroll about the ancient past that talks about the Onigari no Ryuou being thrown into the swamp, but is unable to find it there, then it turns out to be in the shrine like in Gou/Sotsu, kind of suggesting Kotohogushi/that scroll were plainly wrong (The Onigari no Ryuou originates from Matsuribayashi's final TIP, not Kotohogushi). Ancient Hanyuu also doesn't look like her Kotohogushi self. Mei's main writer is the same one from the console arcs too, although R07 cowrites the main plot/setting for Mei.

The ryunn are better thought of as 5th dimensional beings, alien might give the wrong idea but it's also suggested that the sea of fragments is another form of what they call gates from their original "world."
@MrHunteru
Жыл бұрын
I had suspicions of the sea of fragments being lynoses but I wasn't sure, I'll definitely bring that up in later videos then once the sea of fragments is more introduced into the story. I don't think referring to Ryuuns as aliens is necessarily wrong, cause alien or extraterrestrial life means anything that isn't originally from Earth, and the Ryuun are *most likely* not from Earth. Although 5th dimensional beings definitely fits the bill of what they are much better

@@MrHunteru Agreed, the word "alien" could just refer to one that is not originally from said world. Things get further complicated though if you add in the other clans like Tamurahime no Mikoto's feather clan and then more complex if u go into Une's character. Once you reach the peak of higurashi, I think going into Umineko starting with Featherine and Hanyuu's connections are very interesting and very much misunderstood and would love to see you make a video going further in. hear me out... Kotogohushi-hen to Higurashi is what Kizumonogatari is to the monogatari franchise. A great back-story arc.
Higurashi!!!! Best Classic horror experience.. Let's gooo
Some major spoilers for those who haven't played the games or watched Gou and Sotsu. Based on Hanyuu's off statement that she spent 1000 years alone before meeting Rika, I think it's safe to assume Kotohogushi-hen takes place somewhere in the Late Heian period, which was 900CE to 1185CE. While I know Higurashi does throw around approximations a lot, the use of 1000 years has only ever been used twice in the series before Gou and Sotsu IIRC. Once was when Hanyuu tells the player she had been alone for 1000 years before meeting Rika in the visual novel (I think it was in one of the flashbacks of the connecting fragments portion of Matsuribayashi, or when she was monologing when we were viewing the events from her point of view), and once in in Miotsukishi Omote where Rika laments having looped for 100's of years, then says maybe even 1000 years (though as we later find out in Miotsukishi that Rika isn't Rika, but instead Hanyuu in Rika's body, we can attribute the mention of 1000 years to Hanyuu's memories being conflated with Rika's). I just got done playing the visual novels myself, so I'm pretty confident in this. In Gou/Sotsu, we learn that the number of loops has indeed reached over 1000 due to Satoko's antics. I believe Satoko mentions it to Eua during one of the inbetween moments in the Sea of Fragments.
Noooooo wtf 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I'm genuinely going to be crying for weeks over Riku I had a feeling it was gonna happen but after the baby I let my guard down 😭😭😭😭😭 this is so sad

Honestly, not that I hated Gou but I really dislike Sotsu except for a little bit of the ending part with the "Dear You-Graduation" song. If anything I would probably just think that the only Canon is the original up until Kai/and Rei. Anyways, great video. Always loved your Higurashi contents mate.
I haven't actually watched this video since I'm not sure there's much of a point to that for people like me who already read Kotohogushi, but judging by its title, it seems to be treating this arc as the objective truth behind Hanyuu, which isn't what Kotohogushi is aiming for. I wouldn't know if the video itself brings it up, but it's important to note that Kotohogushi explicitly rejects the notion that its events are canon. They are merely conjecture based on the scrolls of the Furudes. So while they should resemble the truth somewhat, it's possible that many details are wrong. Kotohogushi is simply an interesting take on what Hanyuu's origins could potentially be.

While I do like this arc and find it to be an interesting interpretation of Hanyuu's past, it contradicts the stories we've heard in previous arcs too much for it to be the true backstory. Oyashiro-sama was said to have handled the demons peacefully and the fragment of the past we saw in Matsuribayashi with Hanyuu and her daughter talking was nothing like their final conversation in this arc. (Although there can definitely be some parts of it that are true.)
This is so underated, look at the quality, you see bigger channels with much worse content
Low Key they should adapt this it would be a fire anime
I begin to wonder if Ouka somehow ended up becoming Eua. Hanyuu has horns attached to her skull while Eua and Featherine have just a hornshaped device floating around their head with no direct attachment to their skull. Ouka had no horns but still the demon abilities. Eua calling Hanyuu a failure could be linked to Hanyuu being a failure as her mother to Ouka 🤔 But nevermind. I also have other crappy thoughts like a time paradox where the accumulated looping spirits of Satoko become Lambdadelta who in turn sets the events of Rika becoming Bernkastel (with Hanyuus power), via granting Takanos wish to become a god, in motion although this happens before Satako became a looper. Time is fickle when you're a voyager 🤔
so higurashi was mandela catalogue all along and i never knew
Pretty good
I used to look at higurashi a long time ago when I got my computer it was a long long time ago and I wish I can go back to those days it really was a good anime I also saw the anime the manga in the game played it wasn't half-bad I just wish you'd like this could happen at the anime I really do like looking at something like this to be honest I should have been looking at this each month for each year nevertheless the store we should have been in the anime or Manga it really is a shame but I really do like it really I do I really do like it and I do love it it really is a great story and it should have happened in the anime and manga nevertheless higurashi she is a good story and that's why I love it and maybe someday I might look into it again and do time ❤️🙏😌🙏❤️
For me, the question of canonicity in this backstory is more the thematic setting. Hinamizawa is a tiny village, ~2000 population, and is two trains, a bus ride, and then a drive/walk/bike ride away from anything else. This is a world of shadows, spirits, demons, whispered Iegends, and local gods nobody else knows about but which the locals revere with full piety. Aliens, which in my mind have a MUCH wider scope, don't thematically fit the setting as presented in the original eight arcs IMO. But that's just me; for others it might fit just fine given the association of aliens with farmers in modern American folklore. Besides, those original eight arcs are the only ones all of us agree upon. Everything else, including Gou and Sotsu, are pretty divisive. So I prefer to think of their canonicity as up to individual readers. And also, canonicity is entirely separate from quality. Canon or not, Kotohogushi is a great story, worthy of being experienced.
Would you do a review on the Higurashi Gou manga and Meguri manga once the meguri manga is finished?

@@MrHunteru Thanks
watched higurashi because horror is my favorite genre so i wanted to see some good horror anime, watched shiki and was majorly disapointed in it as a "horror" anime because many people says its one of the best which imo its not that great, then watched Another and Ghost Hunt and loved those especially ghost hunt with the mansion and last episode being fantastic, went onto elfen lied which like shiki isnt that much of a horror either but was way more entertaining and enjoyable. But higurashi is prob my favorite that iv watched so far, mystery, thriller/suspense creates good horror
The anime as you know it is a total blood bath
When you want to know about higurashi lore but too scared to actually watch the anime
MrHunteru is to higurashi as MatPat is to FNAF
I can’t remember if my first higurashi encounter was with that one my little pony animation or that one calling all the monsters amv

Just stop
Just finish gou and sotsu....sotsu really desapointed me and left a massive void
This is a story from the most important timeline but no manga adaptation.
Eua refers to Hanyuu as a fragment of herself, would that mean that Eua and Hanyuu got separated after entering the “portal” to earth?
@MrHunteru

Its really hard to tell, Eua as a character was just not defined super well so almost everything about her is a mystery
14:20 was there a recap of masturibayashi-hen in Goutsu that I don’t remember

There was, but only the ending. It was at the beginning of Satokowashi and scattered some in Sotsu

HOW ARE YOU HERE THIS VIDEO ISN'T PUBLICCC YEETTT
You know, as someone relatively new to anime in general I always had the notion that Higurashi was just gore and violence and nothing else but seeing videos like yours have made me gradually see how much depth the series has. I am even gradually coming around to watching the anime and playing the VNs at some point.

gore and violence is the hook, philosophical questions, history lessons and social critiques is what were staying for.. at least i did

@@vivvy_0 Yeah, your point is a good one. I was initially turned off by the gore and mistakenly assumed that was all the show offered but the deeper stuff is there.
Can’t wait to see maid stream too 👀

*stan lee has entered the chat* This guy: oh sh*t I’m dead

1 correction I would like to make to your video. It's more of a nitpick than a correction actually. Hanyuu's species aren't "aliens" as in extra terrestrials. They come from an entirely different plane of existence altogether. They are technically Extra-dimensional beings, which explains why they can even exist in a spirit form and why Hanyuu has god like powers. The laws of their universe aren't 1 to 1 with ours. In fact, I think it's safe to assume that the universe Hanyuu's species come from is a higher dimensional plane of existence than ours. There are a ton of silly things a higher dimension being can do when interacting with our universe that would make them seem like gods to us. tl;dr: Alien is still an appropriate term for them, but if you don't specify what kind of alien they are, people are going to assume they are extra terrestrials.
Can you just agree with the village? People come there all the time so you could be lucky and live a peaceful life.
by nature of the catbox everything is cannon

Shhhh. While this is technically true it makes sorting everything out much more annoying lmao
Ok but isn't she also featherine with a damaged horn? Is this console arc even canon?

No, her being Featherine while having evidence isn't strong enough of a connection. This arc being canon is up to interpretation, but I believe it is yeah
It's August 31st Where's ur timeline video
I feel like this is gonna be like Monogatari in a way...
I have to ask: who is this series intended for? If it’s for fans of Higurashi who are really only familiar with the 8 main arcs/DEEN anime and Gou-Sotsu, I’m not sure why you’re spending time explaining what Hinamizawa and Hanyuu are

Its for everyone. I was made aware a lot in my prior uploads that people who had never watched the show or read the visual novels watch these videos, so I put in some info to help them understand better. Not a ton of info thought because I don't want to water down the rest of the video. The main purpose is to make as much information about the series as readily available as I can
higurashi was so Amazin and still Amazin the gore the guts the gore the inner parts show the gore the grudges the gore and the gore
Jesus, I thought people in the series were just batsh*t insane... but alien ghosts possessing humans just placed this sh*t in Uncanny valley territory.
So how do witches come into this series?
