The Real Mary: The Marginalization and Transformation of the Jewish Mother of Jesus

Many would object that the "title" of this lecture has to be incorrect--after all, is not Mary the most prominent woman in history? How could one possibly present her as marginalized?
In fact, Mary, the mother of Jesus is at once the "best known" and "least known" woman in human history. Unquestionably her name is more familiar to more people than any other woman over the past 2000 years--yet she was totally TRANSFORMED from the Jewish woman, likely widowed, of seven to ten children, to a barely human--even heavenly figure-- of piety. She was robbed of her Jewish faith, her children, and her sexuality as a woman. The image of a Nun is one that most often comes to mind--totally removed from the revolutionary time and place in which she lived and raised her family.
I cover this in detail in my forthcoming book, Mary Lost: How the Jewish Mother of Jesus Became the Virgin Mother of God (Knopf: 2024)--which is already out in French: www.amazon.com/Marie-fondatio...
This lecture was part a Biblical Archaeology Society seminar, publishers of the premiere archaeology magazine, Biblical Archaeology Review. It is used with permission.

The difference between the image of Mary in the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church is clear as the difference between day and night. In Finland, for example, there has sometimes been a debate about whether Mary would remain a virgin when she became pregnant for a first time or whether she lost her virginity at the latest when she gave birth to Jesus. This is because Mary’s virginity has no special significance to the message and doctrine of Christianity and she no longer needs it after Mary receiving her message from an angel. For example, it has been said that Mary was a human who gave birth to human and if Jesus didn't teleport out of her womb then he was born naturally in a natural way. The Catholic Church will probably never consider and debate anything like this, I suppose?

The single most important message of all prophets to their people was to worship God alone and none else and to follow His teachings. All of them, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Jesus, Muhammad and others, in addition to those we do not know - invited people to worship God and shun false gods. Moses declared:"Hear, O Israel The Lord our God is one Lord."(Deuteronomy 6:4). This was repeated 1500years later by Jesus, when he said: "The first of all the commandments is, ‘Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord.’(Mark 12:29) So, the greatest commandment, the most important belief according to Jesus, is that God is one. If Jesus was God he would have said, ‘I am God, worship me.’ Instead, he merely repeated a verse from the Old Testament confirming that God is One. This aligns with the mission of Jesus, as taught in Islam, where Jesus was sent to the Children of Israel to confirm the message of the past Prophets - to believe in the One True God. most Christians nowadays believe in trinity.. Jesus said i came not to destroy the commandments of moses i came just to fulfill. Muslims reject the Christian belief that God is a Trinity, not only because the Quran rejects it, but also because if this was God’s true nature, He would have clearly revealed it to Abraham, Noah, Jesus and all of the other prophets. ISLAM is the submission in worship to Allah Alone and it is the essence of all the Messages sent to all nations before us. Allah is All-Just and All-Wise. He does not intend confusion for His Creation. The religion accepted to Him is the one chosen by Him. Its essence must be One, because He is One. It is free from geographical, racist, and status oriented concepts. It is Perfect and it is the complete way of life. All these qualities are chosen by Allah in His Only Religion: Islam. As a practicing Catholic, I deeply appreciate the attention and even reverence you have given to Mary. And unfortunately, it's true that most Christians, and even a lot of Catholics, don't really give much credit to her role as the mother of Jesus. The woman who brought Him up and probably the first human who taught Him obedience to God. It's also sad that a lot of Christians misinterpret Catholic's reverence to Mary. For sure, Jesus loves and reveres His mother greatly, not only while He was human but now as Divine. And so who are we, mere humans, not to love and revere His mother. Just as Jesus loved and loves mankind and taught His apostles, and Mary being the very first disciple when He died, Mary also loved and loves mankind that when she asked her Son to make wine, Jesus though initially was hesitant, obeyed His mother. Would He not still be obedient to her in heaven when mankind ask for her intercession? Mary, the perfect example of a loving, yet stern mother (imagine having 8 children, whether hers biologically or stepchildren, at a young age at that), and also the symbol of strength, especially having witnessed the crucifixion and death of her Son, and the perfect example of obedience and submission to God's will. I believe that God created her holy enough to bear His Son.

Usually the priests in our church say his brothers and sisters means his cousins.. I'd like to know more about how this is accepted or refuted. And yes, I have also heard, it could mean his step- siblings. A priest I knew a long time ago said that whether Mary was a physical or a spiritual virgin, it doesn't matter: she is still a virgin (pure). So I can recite in the Confiteor, "And I ask Mary, ever Virgin, all the angels and saints..." without feeling conflicted. Thoughts? From either you or from Dr. Tabor--or other Catholics?

I wad in a fundamentalist Evangelical church where they barely mentioned Mary in any of their sermons and describe revering her as a sin.

The verb "to revere" is a synonym of "to adore" and "to exalt". The LORD told us clearly that He is the only One we should exalt. Not humans. Exalting anybody but the Father is a grievous sin. Remember Jeremiah 7:18: "The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven [Mary is called the "queen of heaven" by the catholics/orthodox]; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger."

Exalting anybody but the Father is a sin. As to Yeshu'a, He never told us to pray to Him. Isaiah 52:13 tells us: "Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted." Yes, He *will* be greatly exalted, but not yet. We need to keep in mind that this exaltation will happen in the future (the book of Revelation is quite specific about this). Christ did not come to this world to be exalted but to serve the LORD (the Father)- hence the word servant.

Judging by what Americans (& presumably many other nationalities whether they were Protestant or Catholic), used to name their daughters, Mary was one of the most popular girls' names from 1880 until 1960, although it was often paired with another name like Mary Ruth, Mary or Mary Ellen. For example, my maternal grandmother was named "Mary Ruth" as was my mother's older sister, & my paternal grandmother was named Mayme (another spelling for Mamie as in Mamie Eisenhower), which is a variant of the name "Mary". Of course, quite often both girls and boys were named after family members. That too has gone by the wayside.

Can’t wait for the book to come out next year. My mind goes here - her parents found out early on she was pregnant and tried to foist her off on a village guy. When Joseph found out, he felt betrayed, but was going to put her away quietly so that he didn’t look like a fool and/or because he didn’t want to disrespect the wealthy city family?

You didn't mention where Joseph and Mary actually lived at the time of Jesus' birth, whether Nazareth or Bethlehem. You alluded to the challenge Mary may have faced as a single mother of 8 children. It seems to me that if her eldest child could create all that is, seen and unseen, he ought to be able to help out around the house.

They lived in Nazareth. The "census" story seems like a religious construct: Caesar Augustus saying all the (Roman) world should be taxed. Therefore, we are told, Yoseph and Marie went to Bethlehem because hes was in David's family tree. Sounds nice, no? But look at it this way. Rome wanted everything to come to a halt for months on end while they struggled with the visitors? Ludicrous. It's most likely that tax agents went to the citizens towns and cities and looked over their possessions, including homes, animals, furnishings, etc; getting the value of those things to properly tax them. You couldn't levy a tax on people with no idea of their worth. There are other stories that have a strong hint at being fabrications.

Having been raised a Roman Catholic I am familiar with the doctrine if not the terminology of Mary's fate. She DIED and was "ASSUMED" or "assumpted" into Heaven. She DID NOT "ascend" in a BODILY rising like her Son did in the ☁️ on the Mount of Olives when he literally ROSE UP into the sky while his disciples looked up watching him disappear. Apparently, WITHOUT her soul separating from her body, her corpse was "divinely vaporized" or, as "Trekkies" would say, "BEAMED UP". We are thus not to imagine a dead body floating up through the roof into the sky and on through ✨ space into the SPIRITUAL dimension of "Heaven".

As a Catholic child I could not understand why it was said taht Mary, Joseph and Jesus was poor. Mary was related to a Temple aristocratic family. She attended a prosperous wedding. She traveled to Jerusalem. They were (to me) relatives of Martha and Mary, rich women. To me Mary Magdalen, a rich woman, ws also a relative. Yes, as Catholics we did not read the "Bible" at home, we did read the Gospels, and some of Paul. Plus Peter and James. We heard most of Bible in church piece by piece over the years. But the Gospels, Peter and James were always the focus. Mary was at Pentecost as was Mary Magdalene, so why wasn't she an Apostle, since she was ordained with the fire of the Holy Spirit? And, perhaps inffudenced by Annunciation paintings, she could read and read Scripture in Hebrew. The big point here: she was a not poor, Jesus was not poor.

Our most Holy Lady, out of piety and love of God, willingly endured poverty, as proven by the sacrifice of doves and not a larger animal when she presented the Lord in the temple. This is in keeping with the law of Moses that sin offerings could be two doves if the family couldn’t afford the larger sacrifice (which I’m unfortunately forgetting). This is why she is the model of monasticism for women, because she willingly sacrificed so much. O Theotokos, save us.

Sorry, as far as I know Nazareth was a tiny place, an outpost, a village viewed with some suspicion....Joseph was a carpenter - I wonder how rich that made him.... the dove sacrifice suggests people with meagre resources. I suppose Jesus would have more stories about his childhood and before he started on his mission, if he had been the son of a well-to-do family. Fleeing with a young child overnight to Egypt also indicates poverty more than riches. But the idea of something novel and controversial is always more juicy...

Glad Dr. Tabor mentions French. Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc, Juana de Arco, etc.) is arguably both the greatest known and the least known woman of all time, and probably the least understood. Very view people realize that before THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004), there was THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928). Today (end of April) may be the day which the French annually renact Joan's (Jeanne's) TRIUMPHAL ENTRY through the EAST GATE (Burgundy Gate) into the besieged City of Orleans, where Joan brought salvation to the starving citizens through supplies of food and military deliverance from the English. Salvation proceeds along a straight line path from EAST to WEST (GATE, DOOR, VEIL). The Golden Gate into the City of Jerusalem, Israel, is sealed shut. The Burgundy Gate into Orleans, France, is today, no longer existent. The Burgundy Gate is temporarily reconstructed annually for the Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc) festival at the end of every April. "Joan of Arc is the GLORY of France and the Universal Church, and France is the Tribe of Judah of the New Covenant." -- Pope Saint Pius X. Then there is the issue of who Joan's mother Isabelle Romee was? Is she like the Virgin Mary, mother of the Son of God? Joan of Arc is called the Daughter of God, by both the archangel Michael, and Joan of Arc's Judges: "Do you consider yourself to be the Daughter of God in the same 'Way'/way that Jesus Christ is considered the Son of God?" Joan: "Oui". [ "Does this question come from you? Or, have others told you about me?" -- Jesus Christ to Pilate. ] "Jehanne la Pucelle. Enfant/Fille de Dieu." -- St. Michael. "A crown of 12 stars is upon her head." (Revelation 12:1-2). "Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?" For many years now, I've been speaking with people and reading accounts of what is called Near Death Experiences. It is a controversial subject and not all NDE stories seem credible to me at least but there are some that are credible and that is what they say: the spirit leaves the dead body and then is alive in the Spirit World. In short, there is no death.

Veneration of Mother seems beyond question. In this question, it refers to Jesus Mother, regardless of the myth of insemination, it need not be Divine. And, the named Mary of Magdalina, it would make sense that a man of Jesus age, in his time & culture, would take a wife & father children as he had time & ability. Mother of...God? Jesus? All Divine association & involvement, which must be taken only on Faith & belief. Children, decendants of Jesus need not be taken on Faith, but on historic fact and actual existence. This is what makes sense and does not require superstition.

Not quite. The reason is Mary's humility. She didn't want the disciples to write very much about her. However, she was the most important teacher of the Church, after the Crucifixion. The apostle's and disciples obeyed and venerated her as the mother of their Lord. St. John called her "My Lady" as if speaking to a Queen. And st. James built the very first Catholic chapel in Saragoza, Spain, in her honor, while she was still alive on this earth. He called the chapel "Mary of the Pillar". It is still there in Spain. John 2:12 shoots a huge hole in the Roman Catholic belief of Mary being a "perpetual virgin." The most well known brother is James. Also, Mark 6:3 (and other references) say Yeshu'a and Yoseph were carpenters; many scholars say they were mostly "day workers," working for Rome; possibly at Sepphoris. This comes from the book "Zealot" by Reza Aslan. And the verse "is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary.." seems odd. In Yeshu'as day, it would be Yeshu'a bar Yoseph, not Yeshua bar (bat?) Maria. I suppose that verse is what leads some scholars to think Yoseph had died when Yeshu'a was a lad.

He did not. His message was to the Jews. He had little or nothing to do with gentiles (pearls before swine). And even if he did, it was very grudgingly. James was the head of the Jerusalem (Jewish) church, along with Peter and John (the disciple that Yeshu'a loved). Don't forget, Yeshu'a was a Jew, not a Christian; that came about from Paul's errant preaching.

Mary is said to have been the daughter of the priest, Joachim. Joseph is said to have been an elderly widower, a tekton (laborer) of not much account. Now the question you need to ask yourself is: why is a prime young maiden of high social standing betrothed to an old geezer of much lower social standing? I draw your attention to MARK 6.03......."Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him." Now if you have noticed in your bible, it was the norm to refer to men as: "the son of XXXX". To do as these people did, indicates that his hometown neighbors knew, or at least believed, that he was not the son of Joseph. It seems likely to me that Mary was found to have "a bun in the oven" and for some reason, the father was not available for marriage, a difficult situation. Obviously none of the young men of the village are going to marry her, and without a husband she is open to being stoned to death as per Mosaic Law. But there is old Joseph who is open to the prospect of getting a fresh young wife, albeit a little used......a prospect he could never otherwise expected to have. A prime young maiden wedding a poor old widower is not something that would have been forgotten. Some claim that the divine birth story came from Mary. Maybe so, maybe so. You know something.........sometimes people tell a lie for so long, they come to believe it themselves.

No, it was not painful for her. Jesus was born in a miraculous way, and didn't harm her virginity. Mary did undergo death, but she chose it voluntarily, because she wanted to follow her Son. She layed down on a couch and her heart stopped, out of pure Love for God. It happened 13th of August, and all the disciples were there, because she was the most important Teacher of the Church, venerated by all the Apostle's, as their queen. Then she was buried, and she was resurrected from the dead on Sunday 15th August. She went up to Heaven, body and soul united, as a human of flesh and blood. She is in Heaven, united to her flesh, just like her divine Son. How that works, we can not understand. Many details of her life, described in "the mystical city of God", by Mary of Agreda.

Jesus is an English variant of the Greek translation of Yeshu'a into Iesus, as they had (or have) no letter J. Nevertheless, Jesus is incorrect. A smaller name mistranslation is in the fabricated crucifixion narrative: the name we hear is Barabbas, but correctly it would be bar Abbas (bar=son of), or son of Abbas (father). And to be persnickity, then let's stop saying Jesus Christ; Correctly, it should be Jesus The Christ, or Jesus, Christ. Written as Jesus Christ, it sounds as if Christ is his last name. I totally agree with your take on "revering" and/or worshipping Mary and the Saints. Also, all statues of Mary or saints need to be removed, as they are idols ("graven images"). You bring up some very good point about Mary. I think it is Mary's genealogy in Matthew because Jesus was born King of the Jews. So Mary's father had to have died right before Jesus was born and Joseph would have been in place as the kinsman redeemer. So Jacob was the biological father of Mary. Joseph couldn't have been in line for the throne ahead of Jesus since Jesus was born King. This all makes sense considering John the Baptist was born 6 months before Jesus and all the Jews knew God was on the move with John's miraculous birth. So Mary was the princess of Israel and everyone knew it. This is why the priests knew of Jesus' out of wedlock birth. They were all making fun of Mary for messing up the plans by getting pregnant before the wedding. This also means Mary actually owned the house in Bethlehem, Jesse's house which David was born in. Yah, No room for Jesus even before He was born, even in the house Mary owned.

Huh…. Then Mathew got it wrong. It’s Joseph’s genealogy in Mathew. From David. I agree, it’s Mary’s. But for a different reason. Mary bore Jesus, spiritually. @@chrisalfano589 Matthew and Luke both have it right. Joseph is a kinsman redeemer. Mary can not be the King of Israel, women could not attain the roll. Matthews genealogy is concerned with the throne of Israel and the proper handling of it from generation to generation. This is why 5 women appear in the account of Matthew. So the throne would have passed to Mary, but she needs a son to receive it. It could have been she had no brothers or they all died. However being the only child left she would need a kinsmen redeemer to continue the family line and inherit the throne to her son. Joseph can not be the king in waiting , if he was than Jesus couldn't be born the King of the Jews. So Joseph had to have agreed ahead of time to marriage that his role was to supply an heir to the throne for Mary was in deed the agreement. To see how this works read the Book of Ruth. In it Boaz becomes the kinsman redeemer for Naomi who is too old to bare children. So her daughter in law " Ruth " became the child bearer for Naomi. Thus Naomi's family name is preserved in Israel and the child inherits Naomi's dead husbands lands. Boaz doesn't get Naomi's lands, the child Ruth bears gets it. So the kinsman redeemer law is a sacrifice for the man doing it. Since he is the closest relative the land would fall to him, but he passes that up to provide for the widow to continue the land in her family's name. It is really a very beautiful thing to see, a true act of love. Of course Boaz does get to marry Ruth for real. It looks like he was very excited about that process. So Matthew's genealogy is for Mary and Luke's is for Joseph. Both lines are from King David. Jesus was born King of the Jews.

This man part is what holds the throne of Israel. This is why the genealogies are so important. If Jesus isn't from the line of David than the prophets have it all wrong or we need to look somewhere else for the Messiah. Matthew and Luke have it correct. The only debate back then was the virgin birth, the Jews saw this as a bastard child. It was for this exact reason all the other signs were given at Jesus' birth. Why not be willing to trust Mary and Joseph's story of the virgin birth. John the Baptist had just been born miraculously, Anna and Simeon had just gave their accounts Jesus was the Messiah. Herod killed all the babies, the great statesmen from the east showed up to trouble all of Jerusalem. We need to look at Mary with the position she held before Jesus. She was the princess of Israel. Her child would be king, and everyone knew it. Herod knew he wasn't of the family of David, and therefore would never be accepted as king. Isaiah was telling us the truth when he said a virgin would give us a Son. This is a very fleshly experience, not a spiritual one. He said this would be a sign, the virgin birth. If we can't trust the signs than we have nothing. To be consistent , people are going to miss the coming of Jesus again because of blindness to the signs. I could go into depth here about what could be missed, but will hold that unless your interested in them. For now, it is completely wonderful how God fit the birth of Jesus into such a tight package of fleshly prophesies and spiritual bonds.

Dr. You are very difficult to listen to. Please cut to the chase. I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

He's simply giving a lecture on Early Christianity. There isn't a point as such other than here's what we know, here's what we think about what we don't know. And then Dr Tabor gives his thoughts in regards to both. Personal belief & faith aren't any part of these scholarly lectures on Early Christianity.

Its details are in in the Qur’an, read it and come with an open heart because none can expose better than the World of Allah. The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. He did not author it. He was unlettered. Its translation is available in many languages in bookstores or in an Islamic Center close to you. Take the time to read it and come/call the Islamic Center, or speak to someone who re-verted and submitted to Allah Alone. @@walid4184 no one ever said anything about the most important thing.. Its was " I am king of the jews an all others will burn in hell forever" .. and remember to hate your parents. Luke 14:15 .. that's exactly what it says.. You Must Hate .. Not that's not what he meant.. you just have a American version of religion... You would have a eye opener experience if you go over to the Holy Land .. Lived in Jerusalem for 7yrs .. That's when I learned the truth.. only thing Christian's did was Brutality murder everyone that didn't believe in magic.. Besides The bible is Not History, There is No Evidence of Any Jesus .. That's why it's called faith, or magic, Voodoo, cult .. all the same thing
