The REAL Cost Of A Kitchen Reno (Part 3: High Budget)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Designer Maia Roffey of Black Sheep Interior Design gives her inside take on the budgets of three kitchen renovations, breaking down all the costs (including labour, designer fees and contingency expenses). Comparing a big-box budget kitchen, a medium hybrid kitchen with some Ikea cabinetry, and a high-end custom kitchen complete with built-in banquette and luxe appliances, this is essential viewing for anyone considering a kitchen overhaul.

The examples were very well selected and explained brilliantly! Even for an absolute outsider it's easy to see now - going back to the low budget project- where money was saved, how and what an effect it has overall. Thank you! To both the designer and all the home owners, a great learning experience!

I think it's easy to call something dated if it's not going with the current trends. But if you make a kitchen based on trends it'll date in 2 years 🙈 This was definitely a high budget! The owners seem to have gotten everything they wanted out of a kitchen and to their tatse. This is definitely not my style or budget, but the quality and that timeless classic look are definitely there!

I agree on all accounts. I call my interior design style “eclectic British grandma” and it works really well for my growing family. It’s also arguably timeless as the word “eclectic” can get you pretty far.

During my reno, the designer fee was the hardest to accept. Paying $125-175/hour for all tasks is a hard budget pill to accept. Design work deserves this rate but this is on top of making money on the purchases too (points) along with simple meet ups with contractors (15-30 minutes @$175.00/hr) that don't warrant this high labour rate. In the end I went on my own to design, source and manage trades. It's not for the faint of heart but I believed I had the skill sets from managing people at work. It worked out and the $20k-35k saved was worth it for my case. I could say I missed out on some smaller design details but overall I think I nailed it.

I think this kitchen could have shown better if it were filmed/staged better. All the under cabinet lighting and island light fixtures turned on, would have added more life to this showing. Light up the stove area to highlight that expensive custom tile work, it all just looks like dark shadows. I think the poor lighting this was shot in is doing this kitchen a disservice. Yes this may be how it looks in "real life", but you are trying to show off a high end kitchen, show it off.

some people really can’t understand the term “taste is subjective” 🤦🏻‍♀️ it may be “ugly” and “outdated” to you, but it’s “beautiful” and “classic” for the home owners. and don’t blame the designers either- I’m sure they did things based on what their clients wanted. none of y’all paid for this kitchen so if you don’t like it either say it politely or just keep it to yourself. on another note, thank you House & Home for this series! Wonderful host and very clear + insightful information and tips :)

My thoughts exactly. I don't understand a 60k designer fee either. Don't they get a 10-20% discount on the materials already? So they charge a designer fee for the cabinets, get a discount and charge extra 30% to manage this? Perhaps I'm exadurating, but I don't get it. You know for that price, I'd order appliances myself to save a lot. Also 6k for a vinyl banquette sitting? Over 200k for a kitchen? I'd expect about 100k but not that much

Thank for the three videos. I am gearing up to do a kitchen Reno in the spring and doing a lot of research at this point. My luxury items (pot filler, in cabinet lighting and garbage disposal) are a lot lower budget than any of these kitchens. There are things in each of the kitchens that I love, although, I nearly had a heart attack at the final cost of the high end kitchen (it is more than the original mortgage on my home I have had for 7 years). But as you said, each of these homeowners have invested their money to achieve the kitchen to meet their needs and although I would love to have the funds to design my dream kitchen that is not my reality right now. Thanks to all the homeowners for allowing us into both their personal space and financial business as well as the designer for sharing her expertise.
