The REAL Best Game of 2017 | Tales of Berseria Retrospective

Ойындар

In this retrospective, I will go over why I believe that Tales of Berseria is the REAL best game of 2017.
If you're looking for a video essay that covers everything you need to know about why you should play Tales of Berseria, then this is the video for you! I'll discuss the story and characters, as well as give my thoughts on the game as a whole. Whether you're a fan of Tales of games or not, I think you'll appreciate my thoughts on this overshadowed masterpiece!
In Tales of Berseria gameplay and story may not be as balanced as the rest of the Tales of series, but they're both a lot better than they may appear on the surface level. Tales of Berseria is often regarded as a solid JRPG, but not many people put a lot of thought into why that is. Some people outright dislike it, some for valid reasons, and some for not-so-valid reasons. We're going to do an in-depth analysis of the game from its themes to the character of Velvet Crowe. All of this will determine why Tales of Berseria is an overshadowed masterpiece. This video covers everything in Tales of Berseria ending with an answer to the question: Do you know why birds fly?
My Tales of Berseria analysis covers everything from the gameplay to the story and character arcs. This video will cover the full extent of the gameplay, the character design and arc of Velvet Crowe, and the themes of religion and extremism and how they're represented in Tales of Berseria. Not many people know how deep this game gets at points, so let's dive headfirst into Tales of Berseria, the REAL best game of 2017.
If you're looking for an action-packed, story-driven game that will keep you entertained for hours on end, then Tales of Berseria is an underrated gem that you should check out! This overshadowed masterpiece is definitely worth your time!

“You hurt more than you hate, that makes you human” - Rokurou (or something like that) Excellent analysis! This definitely deserves more views. Very brave of you to share your own experiences, I think many of us playing experienced similar realizations as well. I came to the game as an angry person looking to indulge in the revenge fantasy but was absolutely blown away after being treated to so much more. A person can be both a caretaker and a vengeful demon, yet almost all of us are deserving of salvation no matter what state we may find ourselves in. I would definitely consider this to be one of the best games of all time! (My second favorite) Just from how real and raw the story is, we need more fantasy stories like this! Thank you so much for the video, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one whose life has been changed by this game.

The analysis is very profound and accurate. I think the best thing about berseria is its profound core. The theme of the conflict between emotion and rationality throughout the game is vividly demonstrated by the plot and characters of the entire game. More importantly, the discussion of the gray side and free will in the game is very realistic. The highlight of the video is why velvet is similar to what Arthur does, but it is different. The difference is that velvet is real. This is the explanation of being alive.“Why birds fly?”“ Because they want to fly!”

Christina Vee is the only reason I play Berseria with a 50% English/Japanese split. Usually it's 100% Japanese with other games. She really showed her range with Velvet and she's absolutely incredible. *EDIT* Yea, I still think her performance on Velvet is the best performance in any JRPG, at least for English.

YEAH YOU FINALLY TALKED ABOUT THIS GAME!!!!!!!! Yes, I am super happy and if you don't mind, I would like to throw my lil story about this game. I heard about this game a couple of years ago and couldn't really get it because at the time I didn't get A PS 4 and I didn't have a job. A friend did play the game and said that he liked it, but he, for some reason, prefered Grace's F combat and he was playing with the JP voices. After that I came across a guy who was let's playing the game within that time period likes what I saw and finally heard about the voice acting in English. I was blown away by how well done the acting was and combined with the fact that Cristina V herself was voicing velvet it was such a nice surprise and change up especially since I was more used to her being Noel. Then within a few years later my friend another friend got me APS 4 for my birthday and I went and bought 2 games 1 was Digimon story cyber sleuth and the other DW 8 Xtreme Legends complete edition. From then I was able to pick up a copy of TOB relatively cheap and I decided OK you know what I'm gonna play this even though I know the ending and I did not like the ending. My 1st play through the game was an absolute journey and I really definitely enjoyed the cast the story the gameplay and some of the music. And once I beat the game I skipped over the ending because I am not a big fan of the ending. But then my playstation 4 decided to crash and all that progress was completely gone so I had to wait a few weeks for me to wanna get the groove to go back and play it again. Thankfully it wasn't that bad to go back and replace with the game again though I'm pretty sure I got a little bit less grade in comparison to when I 1st beat the game but as it is it still is a solid and fun game. Velvet is indeed pretty broken in comparison to everyone else in the group which is why everyone always uses her incomparison to the rest of the cast, Dungeons were pretty much bland and comparison although this was during the time when most people who play modern tales all say that the dungeon designs and later games are way worse than the dungeon designs in older games, Arthur's reason behind his motivation while does make him a good villain it makes it feel like hes a bit stupid like really dumb along with the evil God and as I said before I don't really care for the ending and it just feels pretty annoying with some of the references to the previous tales game we had except that game is worse. And some of the music is really hit and miss but I still had a fun time with the game, the English dub is fantastic and Cristina Vee NAILS it as Velvet. Which funny story about that thanks to the coo coo scene I made it my mission to if I ever meet Cristina Vee in a convention someday I would ask her to basically do that and fortunately last year I was able to do that and she did the thing AND I got my copy autographed! I was so happy to have her autograpand overall it definitely solidified TOB as one of my favorite games in the series and it's because of that game that arise was able to run and be a great solid game in the series. Fantastic job on this one hour video and as I've said before it always warns my heart to see people speak a lot of good praise for TOB instead of just pushing it under the rug just cause it's not Symphonia or Vesperia. Again great job and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and. Happy New Year!

Tbh, I would go on a quest to kill my sibling’s murderer if that happened. Calling Velvet a victim of trauma an ‘excuse’ for her behaviour isn’t accurate, she is just acting how someone innocent as she was in the beginning would react to this. The higher the mindset, the greater the fall.

I think its hilarious that you seemingly threw shade at Schaffrilas (sp?) because your voice and delivery are similar to his and I mean that as a compliment. Anyway, Tales of Berseria has one of the best video game stories I've ever experienced. The emptiness i felt after that ending was palpable for days. Velvet is a top 5 protag for me. Commenting for the algo. More people need to try this game.

I’m unsure how to feel after watching until the end of the video. I’ve went through an incident that broke me from an ignorant positive person, to a more thoughtful negative person. My family says the things my parent made me go through is a good thing, because their hardships have made me grown. The thorn in my heart will always be that I have a hard time resisting ‘edginess’ like pretending like I don’t care. When I’m alone by myself, I can act like that indifferent person who acts upon reason. When faced with others, such a farce breaks down and I’m swayed by their words easily. I care, and I know the people around me know that too. It’s just that relationships can be hard to maintain sometimes. I’ve been conditioned to not forgive people and put up a strong front out of fear of being considered a pushover, because I know well how such people are treated. My heart bled when the most traumatising incident of my life made me nihilism. Depression from a feeling of inferiority that never leaves me, as it has become a part of my heart. The only thing I find myself doing is trying to make the healthier decisions in life. To not be ruled over by my emotions, and to also be my own person rather than a tool. Hopefully, you will keep that mindset too in the long run. Glad to have assisted somehow, and thanks for the shout out.

  • @MaviLeb

    @MaviLeb

Being able to forgive is a sign of true strength. It is easy to hold a grudge or to hate someone but to show love to someone who hates you, that is the hardest thing one can do. That is what Jesus has done. He gave His life while we still hated Him, for He loved us. Yes, also you, no matter how inferior you feel at times - you are of value to God. Whatever people say or think about 'chrstianity' or 'religion', this draws draws a very different picture to what most people truly believe about it. The bible says that no one is good, all have sinned (yes, me too!). But it also says that God will forgive us, if we believe that He has given His life so we can live. And He promises to give everyone who does that a new heart. A heart which wants to do good rather than bad.

Thank you, dude! 8:39 and 9:12 That feel when someone had the genius idea of injecting a drop of MGR into Berseria... HOOO BOY Really curious how you mentioned Eizen having OCD. I completely agree but as an autistic person I see him as definitely autistic in addition to OCD (I tend to forget about OCD even though I'm pretty sure I have it, sooorrryyyy), and I do recall you mentioning that he was autistic in one of your community posts, sooo I am curious why you omitted that here... Or is it coming later? 36:56 Hey, ma, my writing is on KZread! Really glad that I could contribute to your video even in such a small way, though I hope to do more in terms of analysing this game someday! And speaking of that - very good point on the camera not being horny in Berseria. Like, even Metal Gear Rising has an extremely horny camera but what saves that game is that it's 90% male ass so it's different from most games! I am so happy to see someone have such a view on religion that is so similar to mine! Like no caveats, nothing to add - this is straight up how I see it! Good Lord! Also what a great monologue there at the end! Very Christian, I must say! Thank you once again for doing all this hard work, my fellow Aspie, and I wish you to keep going with your content like this!

This is a fine game, a very fine game, I would even go as far and say if you care only about the story and character interactions in tales of games and less about craftig/Battle then this one could be the best tales of game for you. Buuuut gotta give flaws to where you can find them, the villians are all kind weak and their presence isn't felt much in the game. The endboss fight has some beautiful animations, but the fight itself is kind lame I'm kind missing some attacks or a couple extra transformation scenes. Then again I went with a Velvet Focus stun lock built so maybe I could have seen more if I didn't one comboed the fight.

As someone that's dealt with depression n suicide velvet is my favorite cause I relate to her. She no longer values herself as a person n her outfit matches that we forget. This is the prequel, meaning everyone we see here dies there's no happy ending that if they go through with their plan malice will effect the world over n over again a lord of calamity n shepherd will battle again n again. Velvet is on a suicide mission she doesn't plan on making it out alive win or lose. Her outfit says get in close n attack me they under estimate her not realizing her whole body is a weapon she wants u to believe she vulnerable the minute u get in close she's slashing kicking punching making sure she stays close n on top of you

My girlfriend just finished Berseria (with me watching the whole thing) and it was definitely one of the best videogame stories we've ever experienced. Particularly for me as someone who grew up Christian but has since left the religion, the way the game deals with religious themes and the idea that maybe a perfectly peaceful unsinful world isn't such a good thing really struck a chord in me. All the characters were compelling and had interesting arcs (Magilou is particularly interesting in the later game) and we both cried during the end credits. That said, there were some issues we found in the game. Gameplay-wise, the dungeons kinda sucked, it was annoying that the geoboard comes so lategame and you have to find a special thingy to even activate it, and my girlfriend did find the battle system somewhat repetitive. There was also a surprising frequency of typos in the skit text in the later game. In terms of characters and story, Bienfu's character was often uncomfortable and annoying (his relationship with Magilou is very interesting but do we REALLY need a pervy mascot?). Particularly in the early to mid game there were also several skits that were weirdly sexist (a big example is the Laphicet with Eizen and Rokurou "women are manipulators" skit, but generally weird stuff about women popped up every now and then some of which fit with the setting but some of which didn't. Definitely not game ruining but it occasionally got on our nerves). Overall however despite its flaws Berseria was a great game with an amazing story and unforgettable characters that will sit with you for a long time after playing. (In terms of Velvet's outfit - personally I find the boobage to be a bit gratuitous but aside from that I love her outfit and think that it really suits her character. And I'm grateful at the very least the game doesn't have Xeno 2 style boob and ass shots at inappropriate moments)

Well, that was a journey of a video. Ostensibly I can't say I'm a big fan of your style of video making. Please don't take that personally, it's just not to my liking and that's perfectly fine, I still watched the entire thing regardless and found myself enjoying it for the most part. The only part I found myself disagreeing with is the combat, as much as I love Berseria, the combat didn't do it for me. Maybe there's more to it than I'm giving it credit for and I haven't dug deep enough, but after finishing the game, I had little desire to see what I possibly missed out on, it just left me feeling burnt out. That aside, I really enjoyed your breakdown of the game's story, characters and themes. I appreciated how you tackled the largely shallow criticisms towards the game, but also offered your own, more valid issues with the game's overuse of the skit format for exposition which in turn harmed the pacing, as well as the lackluster dungeon design. The only other issue I had was that I felt you needlessly dunked on Zestiria too much, and this coming from a guy that made two videos harshly criticizing Zestiria's level design and combat. Despite me agreeing that Zesty is lame, within the context of your video, it just felt unnecessary and distracted from your arguments on what made Berseria good. Anyways, all that said, I liked and appreciated the video, it's always good to see Berseria get some much needed love as I don't think it has gotten the recognition it rightfully deserves and I am happy you're doing something to rectify that.

Not in America it's not. I used the same logic as Persona 5's release as it was also released in 2016 in Japan.

Kind of weird that the one thing I want to comment on aside from answering the question that was asked at the beginning is my personal feelings towards religion. But the mentioning of "in his own image" thing really put it to the forefront of what I have issues with, outside of the extremes. I think religion is a good thing if done without the extreme and force and such--without question it helps so many people through tough times and recovery. But my personal issue is that it's SO steeped in human hubris. Why would we be the chosen ones? The ones in his image? Especially when he created the entirety of existence, including the stars and far distant galaxies and perhaps a multi-verse? I guess that's mostly just Abrahamic religions but still--that's something that bothers me. It feels arrogant when I think about it. But that's it about that. I thoroughly enjoyed the video, and the love given to EN cast--not only of this game, but many before it that don't get the love or recognition they deserve. And I'm glad you don't let your past define the person who you want to be going forward in your life. Mistakes are only failures if you don't try to use them to better yourself as a person after all. Failure isn't the falling down, it's the staying down.

I absolutely LOVE your take on the human hubris aspect of religion. It really is a fascinating question. I remember my high school astronomy teacher (who iirc is a Christian) said a very similar thing in the sense of his question being "Were we truly the best that God could do with his own image". It's a question that stuck with me, as well.

@@JonathanFrostathan I think outside the sexualized female character designs, you’ll prolly like it. With that being said, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

I dont like berseria but I'll hear you out. Edit 1:Damn you really like it huh lol. Edit 2:I feel like you go a bit too irate in the video. Comes across a little whiny. Edit 3: oh hell nah the english dub is horrendous bruh. Its one of the leading reasons I hate the game's dialogue lmao. Also the combat IS horrendous. Not because "its mashy" but because its braindead in comparison to LMBS. In the same vein, I dont see how you like this more than zestiria. Zestiria at least has standard attacks

The combat of Berseria is bad. Even many of us who like the game think it has some of the worst combat in the series. Don't be a fanboy about it. Berseria's combat is so bad, when Zesteria has a battle in an open large area where the camera can't get stuck, it has better combat than Berseria.
