The re-discovery of Nepenthes mapuluensis and Nepenthes epiphytica
A non-broadcast documentary (made just for fun) filmed during a 2019 expedition led by Stewart McPherson to re-discover Nepenthes mapuluensis and N. epiphytica, two of the least known species of all pitcher plants. Both, having only ever been observed on a couple of occasions.
Nepenthes mapuluensis was first discovered during in 1957, during an expedition by botanist Andrew Klostermans growing on a remote mountain, Mount Illas Mapulu, in Kalimantan, Borneo.
Nepenthes epiphytica was discovered many decades later in the same area by the great Nepenthes explorers, Joachim Nerz and Andreas Wistuba.
Throughout the 20th century, Nepenthes mapuluensis and N. epiphytica remained very little known. A massive fire burnt much of the habitat in the 1990s, and it was feared that both species may be extinct in the wild.
So, in 2019, M.A. Suska, Mamed Bin Anwar, Diego Garrido, Dalton Bridgers, Hannah Bridgers, Michal Golos, James Klech, Edward Lee, Antoine le Lirzin, Mike Perkins and Stewart McPherson set out to re-discover Nepenthes mapuluensis and N. epiphytica to answer the mystery once and for all.

Whenever I want to see a adventure video, I don’t go for survivor man or bbc, I also go for redfern expeditions, the way he guides us through the obstacles and tells us every detail is just amazing.
I really appreciate you focusing so much on the guides and locals. Often they are what make an expedition possible, but still aren’t recognized very much.

Insane nepenthes Mapulensis traps! So big and beautiful! Definitely want to see more! :D Would've been interesting to see what can be found inside with these in situ carnivorous plants.
What a wonderfully told and thoroughly lovey hidden gem of a documentary this is. Very reminiscent of the BBC documentaries of the 1990s that I grew up with.

@@redfernexpeditions apologies for the late comment, but I've been wondering something about nepenthes for quite a while: How do nepenthes (highland ones especially) spread across different mountains? Things like edwardsiana appearing on Kinabalu and tambuyukon, lowii on trus madi and kinabalu... are there any theories on how they end up where they are? They're highlanders and can't spread from mountain to mountain via the lowland valleys, they're restricted to certain altitudes, and nepenthes seeds definitely don't have the aerodynamics to fly from mountain to mountain. Thank you!
