Oddly enough this actually makes me feel a lot more comforted about publishing my first book. When people talk about smash hits like this they usually refer to the millions of copies they've sold...and not what the publisher started out trying to market. So the idea that they may only start out with a couple hundred (as is consistent with the publishers I'm reading up on) seems a lot less discouraging now.

Well, unless it changes (I doubt it will, but I've noticed the name starting to not fit in the story as well) the name of the book is Blind Faith. To keep it brief, it's a fantasy novel about a teenager who is framed for various crimes and is sent to a delinquent center, except the center is actually a safe haven for the outcasts of society to hone their latent abilities and general stealth as ninja. ...now that I wrote out a short synopsis, I guess it sounds a little off-kilter >.> But I'm going to be finishing the final personal edit of it this summer and seeking out an editor/start sending it to publishers soon ^^"

The 'Young Dumbledore' on the back of the early editions was actually just a random wizard. When I was at school I did a big project as part of my Graphics A-Level on Harry Potter and managed to end up in e-mail contact with the illustrator Thomas Taylor. He said that he was requested to draw just a random wizard, not any particular character, for the back, but was changed for subsequent editions because so many kids were writing in to ask how the wizard was supposed to be.

My grandfather had one of the largest rare book collections in Latin America. Each trip to his house as a child was full of wonder and excitement as I carefully rummaged through the piles of treasures he had collected throughout the years, listening to him tell me the stories they held and showing me how to properly hold a book, turn a page, and take care of it as if it were a living organism. The most magical moments of my youth, and perhaps my entire life. Books are indeed a living organism, and there's nothing quite like holding an old book in your palms, smelling that wonderful "old book" smell, and becoming--for just a moment--a part of its history. I would not doubt for a single second on placing a bid for JK's personal copy. To know what the author thought about each chapter, details, personal elements that she tied into the book. What a privilege it must be!

I have the copy of Deathly Hallows that I bought at midnight the night it came out. That doesn't sound too special because people all over the world stood in line that night, but I kept everything I got at that event. Pressed between the pages are the receipt for the book, a promotional "Snape: Friend or Foe?" bookmark (which had arguments for each theory on each side) and my ticket to Borders' release party. I know this won't ever be worth big money or anything, but it's like my own little museum of a night my grandkids will be jealous I lived to see.

My cousin owns the first ever print of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which has a mistake in it. In the chapter where Harry reads his book list and equipment he needs for the first year, there is a mistake where "1 Wand' is written down twice. His mum, my aunt, bought it few days after it came out for my cousin for a night time reading. Apparently it's worth a lot since there are so few of them as the mistake was noticed and changed very quickly.

Just because it has the '1 wand' x2 error doesn't mean it is a first print, only a first edition, just like J mentioned in the video. This error was around for a very long time, I have a Canadian 1st Edition, 6th printing of Philosopher's Stone that was part of a boxed set with Chamber and Prisoner, and it still has the wand error - so that was quite a few years later. If you want to confirm the books rarity look for the printing location and the printing number - again, exactly like J said in the video.

This! This is my favorite Super Carlin Bros. By a long shot. Great episode! Aside from any of those rare Potter books, my "holy grail" book would have to be a smuggled copy of James Joyce's Ulysses. Since it was banned in America when it first came out, people would slap a different cover on top of them and smuggle them into the States. It's my favorite book, and a smuggled copy would just be the ultimate.

I don't even own it anymore so I would definately not pay anything for the rearest of the rare. But no judgement for those who do, I just don't understand, but it's your way of living you huge appretiation for something true so I don't need to. I can hold on to my memories without the material reference

I have a copy of this book called The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. It was a first edition hardcover that had a misprint on the front cover under the jacket. The series logo that is on it was printed with the heart and spade printed backwards and their spots switched, so they had to recall the books to fix this issue. I didn't even know it wasn't intentional until I met the author during an event and he was surprised I had a first edition hardcover copy that I brought to have signed and ecstatic when he asked to check the inner logo and saw it was the misprinted logo and took a picture of it. I still have it because it makes me happy to know I have an uncommon book with a large misprint

The version I have is a duplicate of the hand written version that Rowling wrote for the charity. It looks the same as it has the same metal clasps with skulls and even has faux stones just like the original . It also came in a blue velvet sack, enclosed in a large brown leather-look book and had a copies of Rowling's art work too. Who says money can't buy happiness? I didn't know the story behind that version of Beedle the Bard so now I appreciate my copy even more.

I’m pretty sure my grandpa found it in his garage and a lot of it was ringing true to what I remembered. The Dumbledore on the back had a short beard and the list did in fact have 2 wands listed. So I checked the copyright page. It did say Joanne Rowling but the print was number 10 and it was printed in Canada. But I did get excited for a few minutes haha.

Aaah, I think you probably have the published edition of the hand-written print. The one J's talking about didn't 'come with prints'. The one he's talking about didn't come in a box, either. It was given out to people.

I bought a 1st edition, 11th print edition of the Philosopher's Stone at a stand alone used bookstore in my local university 😊📖.... It was the book with the young wizard/young Dumbledore, where it says "Joanne Rowling", and where page 53 says "1 wand" twice 😀 ✨..... I instantly remembered this video when I saw that book at the stand alone used bookstore and decided I had to rewatch this video again to determine how to tell whether I bought a 1st edition 1st printing 🙂

One rare book I do have is a first printing of the 1st in the ¨A Series of Unfortunate Events¨, ¨The Bad Beginning¨, signed by Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler, himself. He was doing a book tour in my area at a local library, I bought my old copy of the book in and got him to sign it, and he did not leave the place until everyone had time for an autograph, a chat, and a picture. Nice guy- and he NEVER breaks character as the eccentric old timey Lemony Snicket. EVER.

Fun story, I actually own a first edition hard-back copy of the first book, with the gold pages and all. My nana brought it home from her trip to the UK two years before the books were released in North America. It took me a year to read it, because I got bored halfway through (I was pretty young and it was the first chapter book I ever voluntarily read). Naturally, the first thing I did with the book was doodle my name inside it, so its value is likely nadda now, except to me emotionally. That book started my love of fantasy literature and by extension literature as a whole. :3

RedVexeD we have almost the same story incoming to own one! My aunt went to London before HP picked up and she was a massive bibliophile. She brought back a first edition with her for us. Our copy is also fairly gross after two small children took it everywhere including the bath, ate while reading it; spilled drinks on it etc lol. It’s special to us and it’s neat to know we own something rare but we definitely did a number on that poor book lol. If only we knew!

I bought as a gift for my sister, and she still has, the limited collectors version of Tales of Beedle the Bard, which came packaged inside of a velvet bag, inside of a larger leather book storage case. My sisters calls it the most beautiful book she has ever seen. I got it new when it went on sale for $100... they now sell between $400-600.

I dont own one but I think it's pretty neat that the first Harry Potter book I ever read was first edition and within the first 17 prints. It had the eccentric wizard on the back, no dust cover (although it was from a primary school library, someone probably took it) and I adored it. I stopped at order of the Phoenix until about 5 years ago though because I was 9 at the time.

I still have an edition of the german Chamber of Secrets that doesn't have the blizzard font in the title that was implemented by later editions, probably with the release of the first movie. In my first ever edition of Philosophers Stone also in German, Sirius Black (the guy who lended the motorbike) is still called Sirius Schwarz and uncle Vernon goes out to get a "Schokokringel" instead of a Doughnut in the very first chapter of the book. That edition is currently at my sister's I believe.

As for other rare books... at San Diego Comic Con 2019.... I picked up a short graphic novel for Disenchantment signed by Matt Groening. There were about 10 of them for sale. 9 of them had his signature plus the year 2019. The 10th one said "Matt Groening (Signature) signed this book." I grabbed that one.

Looking back it is always easy to say that.. Your friends mom probably gets hundreds of books per day that some obscure writer wants released.. Loads of good books probably end up slipping through their fingers as a result.. I imagine it is almost mass production.. Read perhaps 10 random pages or something and decide from there. They probably don't read entire books.. Same with Bitcoins.. Or when my grandfather had the opportunity 80 years ago to purchace a load of land on multiple islands in the North Sea of the Netherlands.. Which everyone thought was gotta be taken by the seas in the long run.. So it was incredibly cheap but sadly he decided to not buy all the land offered but only a small piece for a personal house.. Because he didn't want to risk it.. Basically if my grandfather bought it all he would possess a huge part of 5 of the 7 Islands in the north of the Netherlands which are today tourists hubs.. Perhaps making my grandfather and as a result me a billionaire. He regrets the decision until his deathbed.. But he always said that if he found himself back in those same shoes he likely would have done the same without this foresight.. A mistake like that can be incredibly expensive.. It was a gamble, and he didn't took it.. But if he did bought it and the islands were destroyed over the years then he would have lost his entire fortune.. So I think I would have done the same in his shoes..

I think my first copies of HP will be my most cherished. When I was a kid, I drew in mine and annotated it myself in places. Those doodles and notes help preserve my first few readings of the series so every time I read it, I am literally transported back to when I was a kid. Like, yes having notes or even an autograph would make any of my HP books more special. But nothing, no autograph, no print date could change the meaning of my experience reading those pages. So until my first copies literally fall apart (which they are very close to doing 😋), no other copy of HP will mean as much to me. 😅
