The Rare Propeller Aircraft that Took on A Fighter Jet And Won
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
As the Korean War roared, Lieutenant Peter "Hoagy" Carmichael found himself in the cockpit of a Hawker Sea Fury, a propeller-driven aircraft that seemed almost archaic compared to the thundering jet engines of the Soviet MiG-15s.
In a furious skirmish, Carmichael and other Sea Fury and Firefly pilots fought against eight relentless MiG-15s. As the chaos unfolded and the jets took the upper hand, Carmichael's determination prevailed, bringing down one of the jets after expending most of his ammunition without interruption.
The unique triumph etched the Hawker Sea Fury in history as one of the rare propeller-driven aircraft to ever vanquish a jet in aerial combat.

I am 91 - US Air Force - was stationed on a island off the Korean coast - amazing story - Australian Sea Fury could not get to carrier just off our island - Dead Engine - made a "Dead stick landing on our "curved sand beach ! We got to the plane to see the pilot sitting on the wing "Hello Mates- Got any beer?" He said. We shared some brew- had laughs - he looked like he was about 16 - Plane was put on a barge back to carrier - Amazing Plane - Amazing Pilot !

Uncle Peter Sqibb was an engineer on Theseus, he was a rocket expert who worked on the Saunders Roe dual power interceptor. When a Sea fury went U/S in Korea and had to divert to a US airfield with engine trouble he flew out in a Firefly backseat and repaired the plane in a tent in the snow, 60 years later he got a letter from one of the Yanks with a photo of himself working on the engine. Later on he worked with Martin Baker on the cancelled ejection system for the lower deck boys on the Vulcan. Quite a guy.
I saw a fury at an airshow probably 25 years ago now and the thing was an absolute beast, coming down in a shallow dive it was whistling and at ground level easily as fast as any of the modern jets so it doesnt surprise me that inexperienced Mig pilots completely underestimated the fury which was probably the pinnacle of piston fighter design and whatever aircraft you are in if you got in the sights of 4 x 20mm cannon you're in big trouble regardless of whether you're past or present, worth a mention as well was one of the ultimate high performance aero piston engines, the Centaurus was a masterpiece, great video

There's just something so raw and primal about the sound of piston planes. Jets are amazing machines, with truly stunning performance, but those old prop planes just had a SOUL I guess you could call it. Perhaps its simply that back then pilots actually had to dogfight instead of locking on from miles away and firing a missile, but those birds were true fighters.
Charles Hartman and B. Johnson of VA-25 flying A-1 Skyraiders shot down two Mig 17's in June 1965. I joined this same squadron in November 1966 and people were still talking about these air victories. VA-25 was the last of the Navy Skyraider squadrons receiving the new A-7a jets in 1968.
On Sep. 10, 1952 Capt. Jesse Folmar flying a Corsair from VMA-312 also joined the select club of pilots who shot down a MIG using a propellar driven aircraft.
One of your better videos! The narrator doesn’t speak so quickly these days so it’s less stressful/more relaxing to listen to. I actually used to know Commander (as he was then) Carmichael in the late 1980's through to his death in '97 - he was a sound guy. Even back in the late '80's he was a little dismissive of the 'kill' - which since 2018 is in doubt - and said it was a 'team effort'.

I listened to an interview with the pilot who shot the Mig down, it wasn't Hoagy but one of the pilots under his command on that day, however it was a Protocol (Policy ?) of the Fleet Air Arm that the flight leader would get the credit for the kill. The pilot in question was not in the least bit bitter about Hoagy getting the credit, it was the done thing at the time and he was OK with it.
It’s now considered that “smoo” Ellis was the pilot who brought down the MIG not Carmichael. I remember seeing the Sea Fury take part in the air races down in Tasmania, and they were awesome to see and hear.

@@spawnof200 I beg to differ, the order from the RAF was cancelled shortly before the end of WWII, and at that time the order from the Royal Navy was halved, but it was not the end of the line for the land-based Fury, it was only delayed. Both Iraq & Pakistan ordered the land-based Fury I models along with several of the two-seat trainer versions in 1946, with Pakistan being the largest foreign operator acquiring close to a total of 100 Fury models based on the second prototype; and a total of 9 two-seat trainers. Egypt bought 12 Furies in the early 1950's. I could go on with countries that bought the land-based Fury models, however I believe that I made my point. The "Fury" might not have seen service in WWII or Korea (unlike the Sea Fury, which had a very distinguished service record, even managing to down several Mig 15's), but it did see service & combat with other countries; in some cases, right up until 1968, just as the North American P-51 Mustang saw service with Argentina until they were retired in 1978.

Don't forget about the countless ones still flying because of their legacy, either restored properly or for air racing! Dreadnaught, with an R-4360, in 1985 I witnessed doing 452mph at Reno. That engine past away last year with a main road bearing failure, aircraft and pilot survived due to its clean lines, which traded the speed for altitude, and landed safely.

Well, " is that a machine!"👍
Hawker did build a version of the Tempest with the Centaurus engine, so it was not a great stretch to use that as the basis for the Fury/Sea Fury. Kudos for stating that this interception was one of a relative few cases of a prop fighter taking down a jet fighter. Many times one reads incorrect statements that this was the FIRST (or only) case of this happening. It happened in WWII, Korean War ... AND VIETNAM where the prop aircraft responsible was not even a fighter but a Skyraider attack aircraft!

More than 150 Me-262 German jet fighters were shot down by Allied piston-engined fighters during WW2, the majority by P-51 Mustangs.
Trivia HMAS Sydney Korean war :-"Sydney began her first patrol of the Korean War on 4 October in the western theatre, transferring four days later to the east coast for special operations on 10/11 October. On 11 October, operating against troop concentrations and suspected store dumps on the east coast, Sydney created a light fleet carrier record by flying 89 sorties, making a total of 147 sorties in two days of operations."
There's an inference (at 7:10 ish) that only US ground troops were involved. Quite a few other countries had troops on the ground too (UK, AUS, NZ, CAN and more) - possibly not quite as soon as the US (I dunno) but definitely there. I got talking to one at remembrance day last year 🙂

Including the South African Airforce (SAAF). Although we rarely get credited with anything from WW1, WW2 and the Korean war: "While equipped with Mustangs, the squadron flew 10 373 sorties and out of a total 95 Mustangs acquired, no fewer than 74 were lost due to enemy action and accidents. Twelve pilots were killed in action, 30 missing and four wounded. In January 1953 the squadron received USAF F-86F Sabre jet fighter-bombers. Pilots and ground crew had to undergo courses in Japan to adapt to the aircraft. The first Sabre mission was flown on 16 March 1953. This marked the entry of the SAAF into a new era of jet warfare. Operating from K-55, the Flying Cheetahs took part in fighter sweeps along the Yalu and Chong-Chong rivers as well as ground targets. The squadron flew a total of 2 032 sorties in the Sabres. Only four Sabres were lost out of 22 supplied. The war ended on 27 July 1953. 34 SAAF pilots had lost their lives and eight taken prisoner of war, including the future Chief of the Air Force, General D Earp. 74 Mustangs and 4 Sabres were lost. Prior to returning to South Africa, the Sabres were returned to the USAF."

OK, "Specification N.7/43 was for a naval interceptor, but the video states that this was combined with "Specification F.2/43," but didn't state what role that was for. I kept rewinding the video trying to make sense of, "Camm decided both...."
Weird, the Engine Cowl and Propeller Cone looks like a Japanese Zero and the Bubble Canopy looks like the Bubble Canopy of a P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt.
Given that the MIG was a capable plane, tge seafury was more agile, and like other hawkers could take a beating, its truly no wonder they shot shot down the MIG.
Makes you wonder about how the F8F Bearcat might have turned out.
The Sea Fury and it's land based equivalent the Tempest ii were incredible fast, agile fighters for their time. incidentally, an A-1 skyraider shot down a MiG-17 during the Vietnam conflict.

No, A-1's claimed two MiG-17's in Vietnam. An OV-1 Mohawk has a confirmed probable kill over a MiG-17 in Vietnam as well.

The F4U Corsair got a Mig in Korea, it’s over looked.

@@lynnpreuninger5050 One, those were Chinese MiG-15's and they show no losses that day. The Marine Pilot, Jesse Folmar, was shot down by a MiG-15 after he made his claim. Two, a North Korean Yak-9 shot down a USAF F-80 for the first prop vs jet kill in the Korean War, and that is extremely overlooked.

A-1s shot down their MIGs head to head in one pass. No dog fight.
And the less well known but ever popular, HMS Mudthumper!!!
This took inspiration from the German Focke Wulf 190 Dora (long nose) variant….
It's that time again.
