A few thoughts about this video - Excellent footage by the way. First, establish where this is, the race's history, how many miles per lap, previous record holders, elevation gain, etc. Second, pick one or two top prospects to profile as they go through the race, because it adds stakes for the viewer. Third, ground the viewer in how many miles have been completed (rather than just saying "Lap 10," say "Lap 10 - Mile 34 - 12 hours elapsed". Great atmosphere, shots, interviews - really enjoyed watching.

I kinda like not knowing exactly the specifics of distance/time. It feels like this race is about going even through the unknown of how long it is or how far it is. Not knowing places the viewer in that position, even if it’s to a tiny extent. More information on how this race works and rules would be nice to know though.

For those wondering: One lap is 4.1 miles. The elevation is 605 steps. Sign up fee is 225$. This is the info from their official website (link in description): $10,000 to the overall winner (100 runners) each runner will pay $225 to sign up and, at the start of the race, will be given a $100 bill to carry the entire race. If the runner desires to stop or times out of the race, they will place the $100 bill into a glass case for the overall winner to claim at the end. Two years into the planning to discover the toughest location to pull off a backyard ultra and we found it at the famous AT approach trail in the Amicalola Falls State Park at the coldest possible time of the year. The loop starts at the top of the falls with the rugged East Ridge trail leading down to the bottom parking area to pick up the lower Mountain Laurel trail and then up the AT Approach trails with 605 steps back to the top of the falls. Simple: Each runner will have 1 hour to complete the 4.1-mile loop every hour until only one person remains.

Each lap is 4.167 miles. A backyard ultra, which this is, is based off running 100 miles in a day, so 100/24 = 4.167 mile course. But, as it says, the race only ends when the last person runs one last loop, it doesn't end at any particular distance or # of loops. This is in Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia, part of the Appalachian Trail.

It would be interesting to see how something like this changes as the degree of difficulty goes up or down. Say pick a lap that a lot of people would have to really work at to have 10 minutes to spare vs one where you can do it in have the par time (when you're fresh). I'm guessing the first would select for people who can push hard and the second for people who just keep pushing.

I like the coverage, not focusing on the details but on the experience and the people. The 20 something’s on Reddit try to make it more than it is tracking the runners and their gear/tech/training. Putting courses up on a pedestal like it’s a vacation destination. These backyard ultras are and have always been anti marathons where you really get to know the community you are running with and everyone from the first loser to the winner has the same experience of competing with themselves.

You have 60 mins to complete the loop, if you finish fast in say 50 mins, that gives you 10 mins to take a rest before you have to start again. A lot of different strategies that people do. Some run fast and take lots of breaks while others go slow and come in right at 59 mins and never take breaks!

NEW DATE: December 7th, 2024 REGISTRATION OPENS THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 8TH, AT 9:00AM EASTERN TIME AND WILL SELL OUT IN MINUTES. Go to Ultra Sign-up and get ready. Due to more stair construction scheduled for January 2025, the park has asked us to move the event to December 7th, 2024. This change will allow us to keep the course design as planned, and it should not be as cold as January.

If everyone is starting each lap together how much of a pause is between each lap? Or are the people getting rest just finishing early enough to get time?

  • @TrailRunningZen

New laps start at the top of every hour, so for example if you finish a lap in 40 minutes you have 20 minutes to rest. Conversely, if you don't make it back to the startline in one hour you are out.
