When I first started looking for an older Les Paul Custom - this is the exact kind of guitar I was looking for. Tobacco Sunburst and from the late 70s. These really are works of art. Beautifully plain and built to rock!

I have a 78' Custom sunburst. All my bandmates and musician aquaintances just love the neck and action. Playing on stage for years with it, I've grown accostomed to the weight.
Wow!!! The Graham Coxon's tobaccoburst
Rabea made a video on his ‘78 custom a little while ago, and after hearing it, I really can’t disagree with you on this one. It really is the quintessential Les Paul. Fat, yet rounded tones that cut through a mix without being harsh, and incredible looks as well.
Absolutely superb ! I would love this Custom and not be tempted to change anything . I could live with slightly microphonic pickups , it sounds awesome !
This was my first guitar and still have it. Love it and will never let it go.
I love that tone !! Sounds great!!I want one.
I had a 77 black beauty two pickup bought in 86 for $750! Still miss it to this day! You could plug that thing into a wet sponge and it would still sound like heaven.

I got my hands on a 77 black beauty, plays like butter. The T-tops sound perfect for anything from skynard to Randy Rhoads, the best guitar of all time.
i picked out my '78 wine red chrome LPc in '78, my dad bought it for me. still have it , still love it. nothing plays as well.
Perfect example of the classic custom. Very nice guitar.
You always find the good ones. Thanks!
me: norlins suck trogly: and the first year of the silverburst me: ahhhh norlins
God, absolutely beautiful. Sounds amazing too. I like the maple neck ones. They're vibrant sounding. I prefer the traditional ones, but these are cool in their own right
Incredible how good this thing sounds with gain in any position
I have that guitar in lefty love it
I have a 2006 Les Paul Custom in Ebony, but this tobacco burst is one of my dream guitars. I’d love a 1974 especially, my birth year.
Just bought a 1979 Custom. Almost has the same wear pattern as Adam Jones '79, but mine is black. I love mine. My main tracking guitar from now on.
Beautiful guitar
That's a real Les Paul guitar right there no weight relief. great tone ! Damn you filled up your inventory holy smoke !
Hey Trogly! Can you check out the 2018 Gibson Les Paul HP? Would love to see a breakdown for that model as it’s unique among les Pauls for the way the pickups are mounted!
Wow I think that's my favorite 70s Les Paul!
Beautiful piece!
man when you went from ole slappy to the higher gain playing i was like whoa ! that there guitar sounds great !
Yep awesome were the late 70's LP's. I have a black 1979 standard but a Custom from that time is in my future.
OMG. One day I’ll have another custom that thing is just to die for my favorite of all time customs is tobacco Sunburst from the late 70s.
Really beautiful Les Paul Custom, so nice I think you should hold on to that guitar.
Sounds beautiful
I used to have a 1977 ibanez les Paul copy and despite the bolt on neck, was a great les Paul. I sold it to a guitar shop in Las Vegas and they sold it to Paul Gilbert from Mr Big.
BAD ASS !!$$$!! I love it top 5. My 1981 Standard would next to mine.
Yea it's a gorgeous specimen. Love the burst I'd play it
Had an 81 Standard; LOVED the maple neck on a Les Paul. Gave it a little extra... snap or something. I'm also a fan of the sharper cutaway of the late 70's / early 80s era. (sigh) Wish I hadn't sold that one. :-(
You have no idea how much I want that!
beautiful guitar
Beautiful!
I'm more of a Ibanez fanboy but that is one hell of a good looking Gibson
John Sykes’ custom was also 1978 but he changed the bone nut to brass and the bridge pickup to dirty fingers.
The Quintessential Custom Gibson is the 25/50 Anniversary models to me. It was the first LesPaul I ever saw played (on Hee Haw amusingly).
Really beautiful.
Tobacco Sunburst is my favorite color. Saaweet guitar 👍👀
That one looks really good
Man, I'm feeling those 70's vibes! I'd play Hotel California and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac on it :D
He talks about loving the 78/79s despite no definitive features. I'm probably in the minority but the definitive features I love for the late 70s LPs are the three piece maple neck with volute while not having the pancake body that was used earlier in the 70s. Could be wrong but I think they also have the reduced headstock angle. I've had a 79 for about 35 years and in that time it's had two or three pretty good stand falls and other types of abuse without a headstock break. Can't say for certain the Norlin neck saving features are responsible but I've always felt they likely helped and don't believe they adversely affect the tone of the guitar.
I own a 1980 black standard with a maple neck and second stamped over the serial, the neck profile is different than any other era, thats why its better in my opinion, mine was already "customized" and in poor shape when I got it, I have replaced most of the hardware as it wasnt original anyway, I used gibson parts, burstbucker 2 and 3 from 2000 (non potted) orange drop caps, had it refretted by a gibson authorized repair shop and graphtec nut and bridge saddles, locking tuners and strap locks, she is a player missing some paint and I will never sell it...ever. Thanks for the great videos!

Sounds lovely
I prefer the Maple neck myself it balances out the growls of the pups and mahogany body and I like the way they look if you can see the grain through the finish. Plus I think the maple necks are stronger and less prone to breaking. I am still rather new at identifying all the different years and models and why this is better than that so accordingly I do not have a "year specific" model I want. However, this past year or so that I have been a subscriber to Your channel and hearing what you say in the videos plus things you have told me in our private conversations I think I am starting to lean towards that the 78/79 era. Now I don't know why but I really just do not care for the tobacco sunburst finish. My very brand new Les Paul had that finish and I didn't like it. Ever since I purchased that White Les Paul from you though Austin I have really taken a liking to the white ones, they just are so gorgeous but that MUST have the ebony fretboard! I am about to start to paint that blue one I got from you and my plan is to make it my own personal Les Paul custom, as such I haven't nailed down the color I want yet. I considered white but since I have one already I think I will go with something else. I love that new Blue with black edging look, not the blueberry one (although that is beautiful as well!). Anyway, that sure is a nice guitar man, I love that tone, then again it IS a Les Paul!! I am hoping to get a few things financially figured out here in a couple of months and I may hit you up about you finding me a 1979LP. I know you sub to Robert Bakers channel, LOL, have you ever watched his video on the story of his 79 Les Paul? You should check it out if you haven't. Once you play that certain Les Paul, you just HAVE to have it as Robert found out lol.
Boy.. if I had the money for this, I would buy this in a heartbeat.
Fabulous sound to this one🎩
Beautiful Color !!!
Wow, these 1977 through 1980 Les Paul's are what we dreamed about back then. I find it curious how different the headstock split diamond inlay looks on this guitar compared to a later 1980s LP Custom!
Haven't watched the video yet, but that is beautiful.
I really like the early 80s
Nice guitar! An extra “D” washer from Stewmac will bring the nut up the threads a bit. But you still have to ask yourself why is it happening? Softer mahogany will crush if someone cranks down too much (or breaks the truss rod). I find maple more resistant.
Would you be able to review some amps as I've learned so much about guitars from you so I'd like to learn a bit about amps
That's a lovely axe!
thing sounds huge!
Late 70s are cool though too... if I wasn't saving up for an r9 would have bought this one but I would have offered $2500
dang that sounds nice, what amps are you using?
Pretty guitar.
Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Tobacco burst & T-tops, where do I sign up.
whewee.....yes sir fine specimen
It’s beautiful!🎸🎼🎸🎶☝️🙄
Sold ! Ha ha ha great show buddy .
I turned my '79 Custom into a double cut conversion, painted it white pearl. I assume my Army room mate still has it. Chip Markum?
It sounds great ...what pups are in there
1978 Gibson Les Paul man I would love to have WOW . Lol TroyFrost / Troyster 😎 CoolRiffs 😎 Cool 🎸🤘🤘🤘
Trogly I hope this is part of a continuing string of sweet Norlin customs. I find the blacklight segments super helpful... will any powered blacklight do the trick, or is there a minimum wattage that's useful?

As long as you have a dark room - any power will do. In order to get it to show up on camera, then you need a powerful one. I used to use these : rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FAmerican-DJ-Black-24BLB-24-Blacklight-UV-Black-Light%2F301490331924%3Fepid%3D2254444814%26hash%3Ditem4632396114%3Ag%3Az8sAAOSwv0tVVKTE&campid=5338292223&toolid=20008 Now I use this: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FAmerican-DJ-Halloween-LED-Blacklight-Eco-UV-Bar-Plus-IR-18x-3-Watt-Remote%2F361074625442%3Fepid%3D691334409%26hash%3Ditem5411b98ba2%3Ag%3Abf0AAOSw-pNb0e4C%3Asc%3AShippingMethodStandard!43506!US!-1&campid=5338292223&toolid=20008
Do you play the same amp for every demo? Because if you do, that's great, I can feel like I have a comparative idea of the different sounds of different guitars. If you change up amps, how could we tell from one demo to the next? Loved the pickups on this custom, sounds nasty.
I’m thinking the numbers in the pickup pockets could be a production code They produce a number of bodies for stock then build from inventory
my 14 the birthday, summer 79. that guitar had been in the local shop, for 6 months I worried someone would beat me to it. still have Warranties, all paperwork, which of course I filled out. A mile from the shop to my house, hottest day of the year, So heavy on my young arms. Ah, Dylan had a guitar player, ya gotta serve somebody, he used this one, and charlie daniels guitar player devil went to georgia, and the guy in modern english, , none of my teens ave hero's, mick taylor was the one, but even then Before I got it, I Knew it was more beautiful than the at the time usual sunbursts, tobacco was Not commonly seen before this one, and the gold looks great on it, with the black pickgusrd and details. Never parting with it
NICE!
Joe Calandrella Fleetwood Mac-Nice!
What is the cause of the maxed out truss rod on the Customs??? My '86 felt a little tight the last time I tweaked it.
Hey man try to get your hands on a eastman SB59 it’s a $2200 Japanese made LP style guitar BUT THAT IS WHERE THE SIMILARITY STOPS....you get...one piece mahogany body one piece mahogany neck a proper maple cap a Ebony fret board bone nut jescar stainless Steel frets gotoh SD90 vintage tuners gotoh abr1 bridge and aluminium tailpiece switchcraft wiring and loom nitro cellulose paint finish case candy build certificate and a very nice luxury hard case I can honestly say this guitar is easily as good as a gibson R9 in all regards but for a third of the money what really struck me was how awesome the fret job is no sharp edges no sprout from top to bottom this is a truly hand made instrument and really puts Gibson to shame oh and it comes with seymour duncan 57 classics and a Ebony truss rod cover........if you ever get a chance try one you will be AMAZED and this is the entry level LP style there are two others one based on a black custom which is about $200 more and a relic one in a wine red which is the same price as the custom style guitar.
I have a question. Will we see any epiphone wilshire guitars for epiphone edventure?
heyyyy the sound is soo gooood or wattt???
10:03 *Demonetised for Bulls On Parade* hahahaha
I have a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom with the original chainsaw case and all the original paper work, Mine is white but has faded to yellow and yes I got it's because "Randy Rhoads Rules! It does not leave the house now unless I am recording.
Hey Trogly, why do you buy guitars? Are you a collector? Is your collection on display? Or do you play in a band? ty

I like it!!
Do you know the size & type of the two screws that attach the shielding cap??? My '79 Deluxe has the cap but the screws are absent.
Wine red and cherry sunburst are the least popular? i think they are the best alongside with the white one

Well pete Townshend agrees with ya lol id own one , but i can see that kinda. But im not rich enough to be so picky lol
i have one of those !
Left my 65 fender mustang home. In 72 got out army got 71 black beauty custom. Brand new cost me 595. Off the wall. Saaweet... 71 twin reverb..
I'm a September 78. Damn right I want a 78.. A walnut preferred.. Or a 911 Targa.. Oh.. Yeah. That's a Porsche
What about a review of the latest offerings from Gibson with the new ceo ☺
Yep, happy to see the CSB being not great. the year this TSB was made, i was selliing/trading my '75 Strat for a LPC copy and $50.00 (long story). Hey, i was courting! Guit was a pos. Woman's still here.
I actually have a thing for norlin era customs, shame I don't have the money.
How come that under blacklight the neck pickup ring glows less than the bridge one? I've seen this a couple of times now and I'm wondering why this is the case? Does anyone have an answer to that?
I've always much preferred the Nashville bridges over any ABR1.
@mikebrown3662

Yeah, the extra size gives you more adjustment room, I think people just want historical accuracy on a Les Paul.
@wiseguy9202
4 жыл бұрын
@@mikebrown3662 No doubt. Completely understand. I not only prefer the increased adjustment capability of the ABR6, but I love the fact the post are stud mounted. The old ABR1 lean is a b!tch.
This is the sexiest guitar I’ve ever seen
The "Go To" Outlaws, Lynard Skynard, Dwayne Allman, Country Rock N Roll, Marshall Plexi Stack, in your face, twist it till it squeals, guitar! Damn it! Why did I sell mine? Idiot! Now, I remember! I sold it to buy a 1967 El Camino with a built 454 shoved in it. I still have THAT. It goes past everything on the road but a gas station. It's the passion of guitars and hot rods!
I gotta say, I guess I don't know what a collectors grade guitar is. After watching this I'm think it was in immaculate condition. Then the black light happens only to find out it's players grade!
I didn't remember them being that expensive
Hi, what did a 78 Les Paul Custom cost in 1978. Not 2022 prices.
I got a brand new one in 1978 for Christmas. 2 years later I traded it for a cheap strat cause I didn't like the weight. I could kick myself.
That’s the curviest, sexiest headstock I’ve ever seen on a Les Paul.
360p squad reporting
I prefer a plain top and don't mind a Three peace top
Number inside the body stamp, Weight of guitar? Anyone ever find the answer?
is that guitar long tenon?
I"m trying to track down a 78 LP serial # 72018537. I got it new at Sam Ash in Forest Hill, NY when I was a kid. Sold it when i was early 30's maybe. Cleaning up I found the original warranty card. Just wondering where it is, how far it has traveled. If anyone knows of a website or place where people can find stuff like this out, please let me know.
I don't like sunburst. I especially dislike the teardrop shaped sunbursts. But this one is sexy.
