    it's a really obvious thing to say which i guess is why you didn't mention it, but the heavy furnace taking 25 ore at a time is huge. not only are you getting more bars with less coal, you're also doing it with 5 times fewer spaces. if you're willing to fill a big shed with heavy furnaces you could smelt 3425 ores at a time, but you really don't need a lot, i'm getting perfection rn and i still only have 15 which smelts half a stack in one go (i'm too lazy to make lots of lightning rods or crystalariums so my skull cavern dives are pathetic)

    The heavy furnace is what finally convinced me to actually use a couple of hoppers last run. Had two heavy furnaces (plus a regular furnace to the side when needed) and kept one hopper loaded up with copper and iridium, and other other with iron and gold (and coal in each) . Load up each hopper after a mining run and harvest as needed. I realize you could do the same with regular furnaces but it felt a lot more worthwhile with the heavy ones.

    This is the top mastery for me by a long shot. most of my income is SC dives and not only does it improve them, but also streamlines bar production while giving the 10% bonus. I'd swap to heavy furnace for the reduced space/number of clicks alone.

    Yeah even if you don't often go into mines/skull cavern, being able to process 25 ore for just 3 coal is crazy good. I ended up using the little nook that you can get at the bottom of the "main" room (to the right of the kitchen) for crafting and smelting - it fits 5 (heavy) furnaces at the bottom and the crafting table + 5 (big) chests in the middle, while keeping the furnaces accessible.

    Some people aren't a fan of mining because of the monsters naturally occurring there, but it's one of the most fun bits of the game in my opinion. Especially when I'm trying to sell enough iridium bars to purchase the golden clock... it's FAR less tedious than kegging.

    The Heavy Furnace might as well be a top tier machinery with how useful it is (efficient with time, coal, and bonus bars), and one of the best items in the game. Even if you delve in the Skull Cavern casually, you still need to process the first three ores.

    mining is probably my least favorite mastery. dwarf statue gives minor bonuses, which other than the +1 ore (which you aren't even guaranteed to get) are practically useless, upgraded furnace is not that useful and is pretty boring as far as mastery rewards go, and the extra gems are almost 100% useless unless you dedicate the entire day to diamond hunting, have the diamond book (for which you need the dwarvish translation guide and access to ginger island), AND have decent luck, and after all that you get a slightly above average amount of gold

  • @idontbelieveinmagic

    @idontbelieveinmagic

    upgraded furnaces are pretty huge, iridium dives is one of the late game go to money makers (only competed by 1.6 fishing shenanagins with the smoker) and the heavy furnace is a very significant buff to them, as you both need less coal and get more bars but can more importantly much more easily go through the 800+ iridium ore a day you're getting

    Doesn’t the Geologist profession AND mastery apply to Prismatic shards? Geologist profession: “Chance for gems to appear in pairs.” Mining mastery: “Gem Bearing Rocks now grant twice the gems.” Before you say “This only applies to gem nodes.” Iridium nodes exist AND they have a chance to drop prismatic shards. And because the mastery applies to the Diamond book I think it will also apply to mystic stones AND iridium nodes.
