I produced this show in 1980 with Johanna Persons, our names are on the head credits. We shot for 3 months in early 1980. British video director Keefe had just shot the band at Hammersmith Odeon a few months earlier and we used that concert footage, then gathered costumes and props from Universal Studios (who had hired us to do this show as a marketing piece) and had walk-ons and other gags shot around London as interstitial materials. I will always treasure this show because it was Johanna and myself's first large international production and working with the band was a rare treat. It is my voice as the "director" that starts off the Flash Gordon segment in the recording studio. Later the band re-edited the Flash Gordon piece and that is the version you can mostly see on KZread.

This is an incredible production, Bruce. Ive been a Queen fan my entire life & here I am at 44yrs of age discovering this amazing special! This really captures the energy & essence of the band, at the time. The individual dynamics of each band member, from Freddie in full swing to John Deacon in skinny tie with short hair, I truly adore this band. The cameos from Ringo, Cleese & Twiggy were great! This acts as a genuine timestamp of Queen in 79-80. A band that will never be equalled or replicated. God Bless Freddie!

I saw this tour here in Seattle in '80. After the show (which was and still is the most extravagant, extraordinary and extravagant Rock Concert I've ever seen) my friend, Mark Renstrum, and I were standing out behind the old Seattle Center Coliseum where there were four stretch Limousines waiting; out ran Freddie, then Roger, then John; and then Brian walked out to a small group of us and talked to us and signed some things. It still remains a great memory.

Never got an autograph from Freddie or John, but I did get one from Roger and Brian as they pulled up to an album release party in LA. In fact, I talked to Brian on four separate occasions. One of those times was after a taping of the Tonight Show when Slash joined in on Tie Your Mother Down in the early 90s (Brian's solo band). Everyone was supposed to clear the studio and there was to be no autographs, but Brian was super grateful that he had fans there, and he made it a point to come up to us and sign. Same thing after an LA radio appearance on the Mark & Brian show, he stopped his limo outside the radio station building and signed for a friend and I.

This is epic! This download is extraordinary. I remember watching Freddie in an interview talk about his fear if playing guitar live as there are no out takes and he was fearful of a mess up. Here he goes and kills it in a 12 string to a song he wrote in the bath in under an hour. Genius.

I hadn't heard that story about one hour in the bath! And, yes that is definitely a 12 string Ovation guitar. You can always spot an Ovation from the curved back. Freddy is showing no fear playing this here!

Interestingly this TV special and the video content truly captures the real live intensity and totality of the show like no other footage of Queen. The wide-angle lenses the closeness to the action is a good representation of what a live Queen show truly was. Enjoy, I was there.

Wow this just brings back a wave of childhood memories, Queen....my introduction to what rock n roll was. Had just moved to Huntington Beach, California and just entered the 6th grade of a brand new school. Moved right next door to what would soon be my childhood best friend, Mark. He had this record album with a huge robot on the cover....it was Queen's "News of the World" album. I was hooked on rock n roll from the moment I heard the first few notes "We will rock you".
