Angel Merkel is absolutely not required to curtsey or bow to our Queen, she heads a foreign government, but she respectfully repeatedly bows her head and calls her Her Majesty. She is extremely well mannered and the Queen is gracious, but one detects Frau Merkel is very slightly nervous, even though she must meet hundreds of important people every month. The Queen gives the photographers what they want, historic shots with some polite small talk.

Merkel is one of the rare well educated politicians we have at the time , also very modest and humble , hence why queen likes her I suppose, and is being a diplomatic mediator after those strained times between Europe and England.

English speakers take for granted that other countries all speak English & are the least likely to be fluent in European languages, because Europeans have such a great ability to learn English..

Keeping in mind that she was brought up in East Germany, where English was not compulsory, her grasp of the English language was extremely limited at the time she entered politics, and has had to learn it as an adult. I think she has done well myself.

The Queen is always so classy and charming. I have to say that I feel from listening to her during COVID-19 crisis and at other events that Ms. Markel appears to be a class act too. It is too bad she is stepping down. This world needs more good leaders like Queen Elizabeth and Ms. Markel.

@@katharinak.1467 Pardon me. I think you refer to a single issue. I was speaking of the queen and Dr. Merkel as thoughtful, accomplished women who have done their jobs well and behave rationally. I was not referring to specific policies or the errors we all commit in life. Your comment does not refer to the spirit in which I wrote nor the qualities I was highlighting in these women leaders who have borne the burdens of being among decision makers and dealing with all sorts of human frailty. I am neither British nor German, but am well educated in the liberal western democracies and their current problems and policies. If one makes a mistaken decision, how can that erase a life of achievement? And how can rude or single-issue responses foster our lives together?

It is amazing how the Queen never seems bored with these meetings..She must be thinking "Not another pantsuit!" Always gracious and interested in her guests. How many world leaders has she met during her reign? And the chit chat never seems phony or forced. There will never be another monarch like Queen Elizabeth..A true original!

Two great women showing respect and manners. Noble and grace. Boths time is ending soon...it will be even harder with the Queen leaving. But everything ends at some point. I trust Charles is going to be a good King.

I feel like we’ve seen that dress before in the late 80’s early 90’s and again in the early 2000’s ?? Same exact patter but different styles, she must have the dress remade every 10/15 years! One can say whatever about Merkel's politics, but her old-style sense of duty is right up the Queen's alley.

Always nice to see 2 female giants on the world stage having a cuppa tea and a chinwag. Our Queen gave a lovely, warm welcome to her German guest unlike that despicable, disrespectful and embarrassing, unsportsmanlike booing in Wembley stadium during the German national anthem that blighted an otherwise well-deserved win by the English football team.
